Which Newcastle Players Leave In The Summer – It Depends

Simon Bird has a piece in the Daily Mirror this morning on who Newcastle will sell in the summer should the side be relegated.

sebastien-bassong-90909

Sebation Bassong – Newcastle will try to keep this player no matter what

Let’s remind our readers Simon is the guy who Joe Kinnear slammed at his press conference last September, as Simon had tried to tell Joe via his column in the Daily Mirror what he should be doing, just two days after being appointed Newcastle interim manager.

Simon wanted the players to come in and train on the first Monday, even though Joe had yet to meet the coaching staff and our next game was the following Sunday. And Bird put some disparaging news about Kinnear out in the Mirror gossip newspaper – but what’s new?

What makes these guys think they know how to manage a football club?

The article this morning is however interesting, and suggests Newcastle want to slash their £73M – and that’s true enough, so let’s go through the players Simon has down and comment on them.

This list has the Mirror journalist assuming the club gets relegated, and the players and values attributed to them are Simon’s estimates, and the comments are ours.

  • Michael Owen:
His contract expires in June, and it’s touch and go – but he’s gone if we get relegated but it’s really up to Michael Owen if we don’t, since the club will want to retain him
  • Mark Viduka:
He’s been hopeless at Newcastle since he’s forever  injured – probably will return to Australia but definitely leaving Tyneside whether we are relegated ot not.
  • Oba Martins: Value £10M.
We don’t think Newcastle have any desire to unload Oba Martins, who is a big favorite on Tyneside – but he’ll go if we are relegated.
  • Sebastian Bassong: £9M
No way Newcastle will sell Bassong – this is nonsense. Newcastle will try to keep him even if we are down into the Championship next season.
  • Alan Smith: £2M.
We think Alan will move on in the summer but we hope we can get more than £2M out of him – we paid £6M to Manchester United for him a short two years ago, and he’s very experienced and would be in demand.
  • Joey Barton: £2M.
No way we’d accept £2M for Joey Barton – it could be Ashley still wants to get rid of him but if do we’d need around £6M to sell – and it seems that Joey wants to stay on Tyneside. He will probably go if we are relegated.
  • Damien Duff: £2M.
Not worth selling for that amount, but he’s out if we are relegated because of his £60K/week wages.
  • Geremi: Nominal fee.
We think Geremi is on his way out this summer no matter what, and we should be able to get £2M for him – almost sold in January.
  • Fabricio Coloccini: £8M.
No way this player will leave Newcastle this summer if we are still in the Premier League – but will leave if we go down, as there’s no way he’d get his Argentine place back for the World Cup.
  • Jonas Gutierrez: £5M.
No way this player will leave Newcastle in the summer unless we are relegated and then he will definitely leave to keep his place in the Argentine squad for the World Cup next summer.
  • Habib Beye: £6M.
We signed him for £2M, and we will keep Beye at Newcastle for as long as he wants to stay. Newcastle will try to keep him even if we are relegated.
  • Xisco: £2M.
This lad is showing better form on Tyneside, and may be kept anther year – to sell him now for £2M would be wasting around £4M on him all within 9 months – not a good deal. Probably keep him for one more year no matter what.
  • Jose Enrique: £4M.
Becoming better and better the more he plays at Newcastle, and he loves it on Tyneside. Newcastle may try to keep him if we go down.

The players above in bold we think will be in their way out of Tyneside, whatever happens to Newcastle come the end of May.

And Claudio Cacapa is not even listed, and since his contract will expire in June, he’ll be on his way come the summer.  The club will not pick up the one year option on the Brazilian’s contract.

That’s probably also true of David Edgar, whose contract expires and no new offer has been forthcoming form the club. However, if we get relegated Newcastle may decide to keep David for one year, since he’d be more than decent in the Championship.

So if we survive we think Viduka, Smith, Geremi, Cacapa and Edgar will be on their way out – that’s at least 5 players.

If we are relegated we think Owen, Viduka, Martins, Smith, Barton, Duff, Geremi, Coloccini, Gutierrez and Cacapa will leave, and that’s at least 10 players.

If we are relegated the club will try to hold onto the likes of  Nolan, Butt, Steven Taylor, Ryan Taylor, Guthrie, Bassong, Harper, Beye, Xisco, Ameobi and Lovenkrands.

That’s a decent group of 11 players to build on in the Championship, and the goal would be to come straight back up – immediately.

But let’s hope we are not relegated.

Comments welcome.

  • If we are relegated any player on over 30k a week will be shown the exit door. Unless they have wage drop clauses in their contracts, but they will want to leave anyway. Its not who we want to keep Ed. The club wouldnt be bale to keep a majority of the players. For what should be a mid table premiership team the wages will be too much to keep them on in the Championship.

Quite a media feasting frenzy on us at the moment, brought on by the tossers running our club but i see Sunlin are not being mentioned at the moment due to their enormous three point lead over us and also shame on you Malcolm McDonald for tipping us for the drop.

Think you’ve hit the nail on the head Ed, regarding which players will be off (if we go down that is – we’re not yet!). But I think we’d be lucky to get £6m for Beye, simply because of age.

  • Its ridiculous what the papers are printing. There are 8 games left and 4 winnable ones. 12 points on top of what we have now would keep us up.

Be like Rats fleeing the Titanic come the end of the season.

My gut feeling is that Joey will stay and battle in the fizzy pop league Bassong will be sold as he wants a France call up,Oba will be sold,Owen is off,Duff is Duff,Jonas will go (no end product)Collocini will go Average player too slow for the prem,Steven Taylor will go,Beye will go,Enrique will go,Smith will go to Everton or somewhere like Sunderland, cacapca will stay and geremi they are fizzy pop class,Xisco not really seen much to comment,Butt will stay,Nolan will stay,Gutherie will stay,RTaylor will stay…I also think Harper will be sold.

tbh i want most of those players to leave anyway bar martins beye guti and bassong…….the rest can leave even if we stay up…..

i do think that getting relegated might actually to the club a lot of good…all the dead wood and money grabbers leave nd were left ith those who want to fight and play for the club.

this would be our team if we do get relegated:
(those in bracket are if the staring player leaves)

    —————————-harper————————-
    beye/r.taylor-s.taylor-bassong/kadar-enrique
    lua lua—–butt——–guthrie——-lovenkrands
    ranger—–carroll

that team could possibly bring us straight back up, i also think that going down will give the youth system a great chance to develop

It’s the usual tabloid bull lads, trying to put down more-so than we already are.

I for one am praying that we do not go down, I’m trying to comprehend what it would be like to not be playing in the top flight for the first time in ages.

Saying that I can still remember standing in the Gallowgate back in the day, freezing cold and supporting the team no matter what. So I suppose from my point of view that will not change. I will support the team no matter what division they find themselves in, because at the end of the day that is what supporting your team is all about, and I am Newcastle United through and through.

But if you lose to chelsea and the teams above you win you could find yourselves 5 points adrift and all but relegated this weekend.

Newcastle is an ageing team with some average players low on confidence thrown in. If you stay up i doubt many players will leave as they wont command a large transfer fee and Ashley wont spend much in the summer.

But you could always go down the sirjasontoon route and just blood the youngsters.haha.

totsy- bassong wont be with you if you get relegated and if your youngsters shine they will be signed by premiership clubs. If you go down you will stay there for a while as you are ill equipped for the division.

‘i do think that getting relegated might actually to the club a lot of good…all the dead wood and money grabbers leave nd were left ith those who want to fight and play for the club.’

That is why I advocate a strong manager! These players could go even if we are in the prem if a strong manager lays down the rules and sells any player not willing or up for the fight.
    Steve Bruce for me!

So it is Joe’s favourite piece of genitalia who wrote this opinionated piece in the Mirror. Is this so-called journo a mackem? If we are relegated – and I am not convinced we will be – then obviously big wage earners will be escorted off the premises. I still see Steven Taylor and Steve Harper staying on for the fight back up though. And obviously Shola would stay. We all know Owen is going whether we go down or stay up. And Viduka will go and be sick in Aussie. Anyway it is all “bird shite” as far as I am concerned and we all know what Simon Bird is cos Uncle Joe told us all in no uncertain terms.

It`s a shambles, depressing, “Should I stay or should I go” will be the theme.
Anyone with ambition will be off at the first offer.
Dont see us holding onto Bassong or Martins, who will be in demand.
Duff, Barton, Smith, Cacapa, Viduka, Owen, Ameobi, will be gone because of salary reasons.
Which leaves the team very short on both bodies and talent, even for the championship league.
The youngsters seem to be doing well , second in the division, but are really not ready yet.
So where does that leave us ?
With a team lacking in talent, a club who`s value has been halfed, a parsimonious owner and no real direction due to lack of any upper management, a chief scout who is rumored to be sacked (Wise) a club adrift without a rudder.
How did it all come about so fast ?

I seriously doubt there will be to much interest in your players. Bassong will clearly leave wether you stay up or go down as will owen. Owen will probably end up at either villa or everton. The rest of your ageing squad will be hard to shift because of there obscene salaries and the fact that they are useless.

All those big earners don’t have wage drop clauses in their contracts though ESMM, They forgot about that bit! (Doh!). It’s also alot more complicated than merely showing them the exit door. They have a contract.
