Is Alan Shearer Really The New Newcastle Manager?

Sensational news this morning – and we use our words advisedly – that Alan Shearer is set to be appointed as Newcastle manager until the end of the season, BBC Sport is reporting.

However, it is April 1st and we would have expected some stuff to come out – but very professional sites are reporting this news – however, we do note it’s not on the Newcastle official web site yet.

Alan Shearer – new Newcastle manager – but is this an April Fool joke?

Alan has been critical of Mike Ashley before, which is why if this is indeed true it will come as a huge shock, but very pleasant news, to Newcastle fans everywhere.

Former Newcastle chairman Freddy Shepherd told BBC Radio 5 Live:

“It’s great news. Newcastle are in a fight now, they’re in the trenches, and I think Alan is the guy to carry on that fight.”

Kevin Gallacher, a team-mate and striker from Shearer’s playing days at both Blackburn Rovers and Newcastle United, said this morning:

“It’s a surprise appointment – it’s thrown me a googly to say the least. Obviously with Joe being out unwell something had to happen.”

“You’re just hoping that with all the hype that’s going to follow the team is going to pick it up. Not all great players make great managers but Alan has a great football brain.

“Players always need a leader and now Alan’s there he’ll command the respect of the players. He has eight games to pick them up, starting with Chelsea, and that’s a tough order.”

“The fans will be out celebrating as soon as they hear the news. Alan is so high on the pedestal at Newcastle.”

We will fully believe this story when it’s on the official Newcastle United web site, which it isn’t yet, and this could still be one huge April Fools on Newcastle fans.

But right now we’ll keep our powder dry, because we were sent some strange notes last night, said to be from Derek Llambias at Newcastle saying we were allowed to publish some other big news, with what looked to be an official email – and we still think somebody may have taken the bait.

It could also be some of the very best news that Newcastle fans have been waiting for, for a very long time, so let’s hope this story is true.

If it is true – lots more later!

it has been on BBC Radio 1 all morning, they are quoting he will be in charge till the end of the season until kinnear is fit, then kinnear will resume

i expect that to change quite fast following tomorrow’s press conference (quoted on skysports.com)

really a great news. But has to see whether Shearer likes attacking or defending. Not sure about his tactical approach.

IF its a short term appointment then Mr Ashley is making a big mistake. What if Shearer keeps newcastle in premier league and Kinnear comes back

Still wont believe it until its confirmed because i still don’t trust Ashley and wouldn’t put it past him to have started the rumour to try and get the fans off his back. If it is true WHY has he waited so long to do anything when we were (are ) in the sh*t. As usual another last minute rush.

hmmmm, if shearer keeps us up I can see him being given the job on a permanent basis and joe being moved up-stairs.

Ed, Granted it’s always best to hear it from the horses mouth but I can’t see this one being a practical joke, it would be a horrible one to play on a guy recovering from a heart operation and a whole city full of toon fans. IF it wasn’t true i’m sure ashley or the club would have made a statement to quash it and to save us our sanitey.

I have always advocated Batty – we have no evidence at all to suggest anything but he is a loyal and honest man. Shearer is a man not easily fooled – he will have made sure – if he had any doubt – that all of his questions were answered to his satisfaction. I take it that Shearer has formed the view the man and the club is worth helping.

Not on the official site? Surprise, surprise! Not the greatest communicators going by recent experience. Nothing from the “club insider” either. He/she must be too gobsmacked. Wonderful news if its is true. I think Shearer would not have agreed unless Wise was on his way out to bogeyman land. The uplift on Saturday will be deafening and that for the squad will be telling. What motivation and inspiration he can bring. I got my son to get down from Fenham and keep phoning from the ground. Who the hell wants to be at work on a day like this?

    Jock.

I believe Shearer has been unwilling to come back for some time. But since the rumour about Wise being kicked out, and JK moved upstairs started to float. Perhaps he changed his mind.

Dear God I hope this is true!

was on nightshift last night first heard the news on nightowls at 11 and was convinced it was an april fools but now i am one happy man. By all means i do not think we are safe but it has changed from definate to very possible. I have always been an ashley hater but this could be the move that saves us. All that is left to do is for every supporter to get right behind the toon and fight like hell 2 keep our amazing club in the premiership and it will be Shearer leading us all. Toon toon black and white army!!!

Do you not think that Shearer might have done this on April fools day just to whip up disbelief from the fans and then a realisation that it is true. I wouldn’t put it past the present management structure.

This wont happen as an announcement about Kinear is expected tomorrow.
JFK will probably replace Dennis Wise if stories in the media are true.

Ashley knows that Shearer is his last chance for saving the club and retaining its value.
