Shearer Update On Newcastle Injuries

Shearer has revealed today that he hasn’t yet given up on having both young defenders, Sebastien Bassong and local lad Steven Taylor,  fit for the visit of the Blues tomorrow.

Sebastien Bassong – fitness will go down to the wire

When Taylor left St. James’ Park on crutches two weeks ago, with his ankle heavily protected after the Arsenal game, there were fears he could be out for months, if there was ankle ligament damage.

But the good news was that it was only bruising, and at the very least Steven, who has been in his best form of the season recently, will be fit for the do-or-die game at Stoke City next weekend.

And Bassong is also seeming to make good progress after his groin injury.

Alan Shearer told the Evening Chronicle today:

“Bassong and Taylor are going along OK.” “I still haven’t given up on them. It will go right to the wire with those two.”

“Damien Duff will train today, but Shola will be missing through injury.” “Andy Carroll (ankle) has trained and there was no reaction.”

“Other than long-term injuries like Joey Barton, Mark Viduka and Nacho Gonzalez, we are doing OK.” “There are a few injuries but I still think we’ve got enough.”

It will be very interesting to know what Alan’s team for tomo0rrow will be. If Bassong and Taylor are fit we think Alan could pick the following side:

Harper
Beye Coloccini Bassong Enrique
Lovenkrands Butt Nolan Gutierrez
Owen (c) Martins
Subs: Forster S.Taylor Guthrie Geremi R.Taylor Carroll Smith

We cannot find a place for Duff on the bench, but Alan may. We also have Peter Lovenkrands on the right wing, because of his goal-scoring ability, and as Shearer has already said, we need goals.

We’d also like to see young Carroll play tomorrow, because this lad has looked good when he’s played this year, and he’s also great in the air, and with some Shearer advice he might just be the ticket for tomorrow afternoon, as a second half substitute.

In fact Alan has some tough decisions to make on who starts tomorrow – but if the lads who are recovering from injury, are OK, we’ll have a very strong bench.

Let’s know what you think the team will be – assuming the two young defenders are fit.

Comments always welcome.

    I HAVE A DREAM!!!

Let us not wallow in the valley of despair. I say to you today, my friends, so even though we face the difficulties of today and tomorrow. I still have a dream. It is a dream deeply rooted in the Geordie dream.
I have a dream that one day this club will rise up and live out the true meaning of United: “We hold these truths to be self-evident that all the mob are created equal.”
I have a dream that one day, on the hills of Gateshead, the sons of former miners and the sons of former shipbuilders will be able to sit down together at the table of Mike Ashley and Stardust.
I have a dream that one day even the County of Durham, a state sweltering with the heat of unemployment, sweltering with the heat of being closely linked to Sunderland will be transformed into an oasis of Black and White. .
I have a dream that my two little children will one day live in a region where they will not be judged by the colour of their tracksuits, not to be judged because their tracksuits are black and white and not purple or torquoise like those of David Ike, Stardust and Ashley.!!
    I have a dream today.
I have a dream that one day whilst in St James Park, with its maniac little owners, with its governor having his lips dripping with the words of “poverty” “director of football”, one day right down in Cruddas Park, little black and white boys and girls will be able to join hands with those little torquoise and purple shell suited owners as sisters and brothers.
    I have a dream today.
I have a dream that one day the Team Valley shall be exalted, every hill and mountain shall be made low, the rough places will be made plain and the crooked places will be made straight, and the glory of the Lord Shearer shall be revealed and all flesh shall see it together.
This is my hope. This is the faith that I go back to in my home in Gateshead with. With this faith we will be able to hew out of the mountain of despair a stone of hope. With this faith we will be able to transform the jangling discords of our owners into a beautiful symphony of “Blaydon Races”. With this faith we will be able to work together, to pray together, to struggle together, to go to jail together, to stand up for freedom together, knowing that we will be free one day of Mike Ashley’s wicked ways.

This will be the day, this will be the day when all of Shearers fans will be able to sing with new meaning “Howay the Lads”
And if The Toon is to be a great club, this must become true. So let the Toon Army sing from the prodigious hilltops of the Toon Moor. Let Geordies sing from the mighty mound which perches the Angel.
Let Geordies sing from the heightening hills of Bensham.
Let Geordies sing from the snowcapped hills of Rowlands Gill..
Let Geordies sing from the curvaceous slopes of Byker.
But not only that, let Geordies sing from Stone Terraces of St. James.
    Let freedom ring.
And when this happens, and when we allow the Geordies to sing, when we let it ring from every village and every hamlet, from every state and every city, we will be able to speed up that day when all of Shearers children, black men and white men, Jews and Gentiles, Protestants and Catholics, will be able to join hands and sing in the words of the old Geordie spiritual, “Free at last, free at last. Thank God Almighty, we are free at last.”
“Free of Stardust, Ashley and his ways!!” “No more David Ike Clones” We are freeeeee!!

    I can see :

    …………..Harper…………..
    .Beye.Collo.Bass.Enrique
    ……………Butt……………..
    ……Nolan……Guthrie…..
    Loven……………..Martins
    ……………Owen……………

it’s pretty much a 433 but having martins and loven as wing forwards swap loven for jonas.

I’d like to see us revert to the formation that looked so good in the games in which it was used, with 3 up front, one behind the front 2.

    Harper
    Beye, Coloccini, Bassong, Enrique
    Lovenkrands, Butt, Gutierrez
    Owen
    Carroll, Martins

    R. Taylor….Nolan…..Butt……..Jonas

    …………….Oba……….Owen (c)………..

With Guthrie coming on instead of Nolan/Butt, Duff coming on instead of R. Taylor/Jonas, and Løvenkrands/Carroll coming on instead of Oba.

doubt he’ll play lovenkrands – more likely to play guthrie, nolan, butt and jonas in mid and play a 4-4-2 in my opinion – we need goals so obvious front line of martins and owen – dont forget we need to stop them scoring as well a midfeild of love, butt and guiterez offers no protection to our back four man

    If everyone is fit

Bench…Krul, Colo, Geremi, Duff, Carrol, Guthrie, Martins

Lovenkrands on the wing would be a mistake in my opinion. The couple of times he has played there he hasn’t looked good. I would rather have him dropping in behind Martins.

    So what about a 4-3-2-1?

    Beye Taylor Bassong Enrique

    Guthrie Nolan Jonas

    Lovenkrands Owen
    Martins

Bench: Colo, R.Taylor, Butt, Duff, Smith, Carroll

Maybe playing around with the middle three a little..

If Taylor, Bassong and Duff are fit don’t be suprised to see:

    S Taylor Beye Bassong Enrique
    Jonas Nolan Guthrie Martins
    Owen Carol

Butt, Duff and Lovenkrands could all figure as could Colo but I think the above would offer a better defence, pleanty of pace as well as an ariel threat with Carol laying the ball off for Owen and Martins, which means if Carrol is up front Chelsea will have to double up on him leaving space for Owen and Martin.

The most essential part is we need to score first. I’d take a draw now but as Shearer says we have the quality to do a lot of damage. Out of all the teams we play Chelsea are the ones I hate to beat by.

    ….Lovenkrands…..Butt…..Gutierrez…..

if that’s our midfield against possibly the strongest midfield in the world we’ll get thumped 15-0! chelsea will be playing 1 up top with possibly 5 in midfield, we’d need to work hard there to stop the pressure on our defence so having a srtiker and nicky butt shealding our defence would be suicide.

In my opinion the only way we’d be able to play with three up front would be to have a midfield full of strong fighters ie –

    .. Nolan.. Butt.. Smith
