Alan Shearer has signed an eight-week contract at St James’ Park, and like anything Alan does, he has thrown himself into the job of saving Newcastle from relegation.
Alan Shearer – joking with Jonas Gutierrez yesterday
And Alan has already laid down the law to the players, as he wants the squad to be fully focused for Saturday’s game at home to Chelsea, where it’s so important the lads get off to a good start under the Shearer/Dowie management duo.
Alan has come out today and said he will be judged on Tyneside in the next 8 games, based entirely on the results he gets and nothing else.
Alan is nothing if not straight as an arrow and he said today:
“I will be judged over eight games as every single manager is, whether they like it or not. Whether it is good, bad, or ugly football, you are judged on results and I am no different. I am not coming in to this with my eyes shut, I know what the stakes are.”
“The be-all and end-all is this club needs Premier League football. I don’t care how we get there. In an ideal world it would be nice and pretty, but I am not bothered how we get there so long as we get over that line on May 24.”
“After that the people in charge can look at what direction they want to go in, but for that to happen in the right way we have to be in the Premier League.”
So the mission that Alan, Iain and the players will concentrate on is pure survival, through the end of the season.
We haven’t heard too much about how the injuries are going, and we expect a press conference on the game from Alan and Iain later today, and maybe we’ll get an update on whether Bassong and Steven Taylor will be fit for the vital game tomorrow against The Blues, which will not be easy.
Hey, wouldn’t it be nice if we could put a string of wins together, and actually survive a few games before the end of the season.
Just a completely wild thought. 😀
