Shock Selection – Ameobi, Guthrie, Bassong, Edgar, Duff All Start

stoke-city-fc nufc-crest4

Alan Shearer has made 5 changes to the side that went down to Chelsea last week 2-0.

And there are some surprises as Alan has included Academy products Ameobi and Edgar in the starting line-up.

Shola Ameobi, Danny Guthrie, Sebastien Bassong, David Edgar and Damien Duff all return, with Jose Enrique (injured), Fabricio Coloccini, Jonas Gutierrez, Oba Martins and Peter Lovenkrands (injured) all making way.

We had a feeling that Alan would go for a tall striker up front but we half expected that would be Andy Carroll, as he had an excellent game in front of Alan Shearer for the Reserves last Monday night.

It’s a surprise that Gutierrez and Martins are both dropped, and some fans will not think that’s a good move.

But the players that have been playing for us just haven’t produced the goods so it’s worth a try, and Edgar has hardly let the side down when he’s played, but he had better not give away any penalties this afternoon.

It’s also an excellent chance for the Canadian youngster to prove what he can do for the club he’s been with since he was 14 years old.

It looks like Habib Beye will continue at the center of the defense, which we expected, and he will be joined by Bassong who is back from a groin injury. The two of them should be very strong and we suppose Ryan Taylor and Edgar will be the full backs, with David on the left hand side.

Guthrie makes his first start since January after a hamstring layoff.  And Alan has both Nile Ranger and Andy Carroll on the subs bench so it looks like he’s willing to give the youngsters their chance.

Newcastle start the game second bottom of the league as Middlesbrough beat Hull City 3-1, but Bolton, Sunderland and Blackburn all lost, (Bolton scored 3 in the last 20 minutes after being 4-0 down at Stamford Bridge), and WBA and Portsmouth drew, which is probably the best result for Newcastle.

So most of the results went our way – but the lads must produce today – it’s now up to them and we must somehow get 3 points from this game, otherwise it will look very uncomfortable for the Newcastle club tonight.

We will not have a half time report – but we’ll back at full time.

Howay The Lads!!

    I’m worried.

Hull move closer to the mix. Boro, Scum and Hull join to fight to get out the bottom 2

Are we playing 4-3-3?? And if so, why is Duff up front instead of Carroll? For that matter, why is Shola even playing???

How is this possible??? Every fan sees that Ameobi is the worst player we have got. Nobody would put him in the team. But every managr we have (Keegan, Kinnear, Hughton , now Shearer) needs to play him. And then after 4 weeks they (will) come to the conclusion that he is a waste of space.

    Martins should play, full stop.

    Obafan-

Might not be a bad idea to use the starting to hold Stoke at bay and play defensively. Use Obafemi Martins as an impact sub to start the second half and go all out attack. Maybe not a bad idea as Martins won’t be knackered and we can REALLY use his pace to get in behind Stoke and put some points on the board.

OK, why is Martins not in the squad? I mean, to be quite honest, he’s been crap the past few games. Missing that penalty against Arsenal was awful, and then watching the Nigeria vs Mozambique game was terrible too. I can’t believe they DREW against Mozambique….. so yeah, maybe Oba needs to get his sh!te together?

I disagree with everyone about Ameobi and feel that although he has been poor in some games he offers more in the way of holding the ball up and ability to bring in Owen than any of the other strikers we have (apart from Viduka that is). Ameobi has a better touch and moves better than Carroll. I’ve seen Carroll in reserves as well as the games he’s played for the first team and he always looks leggy. He takes his chances well but has not got much of a touch. I think Shearer knows that we’re in a battle today and has looked to match Stoke for their aerial threat as well as provide an attacking threat to hopefully win the game.

    Come on!!!!

Having Beye and Bassong in the centre of defence is a good thing against Stoke, however i would have rather had Colo at right back than Taylor. I understand we need some height up front, but Ameobi, it’s astounding that all our managers persist with him. If Shearer rates Ranger so highly why doesn’t he take a chance and go with him, he could be the man that would offer us something different. I guess it looks like the end of the road for Oba, unless he’s injured of course.

That’s a good point, m8!! I’m pretty sure that our front formation is really just designed to get Mikey O the ball and pray that he can slot it through.

    Bizzare!

Let’s face it lads, Shearer loves Owen, Owen and Oba tend not to compliment each other, I reckon Shearer’s picked the squad around Owen…

If it works out, it’s down to him, if not, I know where my blame is lying – legend on the pitch or not!

You are all stressed out way too much. The Britannia is a more narrow stadium. Playing players that play really wide (ie Jonas and Oba) would do us no good because of their narrow pitch. You need big up and down the pitch players on a narrow pitch.

…can’t say I agree with having him completely out of the side though.

I’m pretty sure it’s a 4-3-3….and although a strange team selection i can somewhat agree with it. Shearer is just trying to fight Stoke and not get run over.

Although Martins beaing out of the squad is really strange…

PS: I think Shola might score today….

I think he has gone for ameobi because of the height and strength of stoke’s defence. Ameobi over carroll because ameobi has more experience. However i don’t understand why martins isn’t at least on the bench.
