HT: Stoke 1 Newcastle 0: Magpies Poor

April 11th, 2009 by Ed Harrison · 115 Comments

stoke-city-fc nufc-crest4

In a disappointing first half for Newcastle United at the Britannia Stadium, Stoke went in at the interval one goal ahead.

And just to rub it in, it was former Newcastle player Abdoulaye Faye, who scored directly from a corner, with a well placed header. He also scored the equalizer in the 2-2 draw at St. James’ Park earlier in the season.

As expected Newcastle had to undergo an aerial attack form Stoke in the first half, and while not playing well, they managed to hold out before Faye got in his free header after 33 minutes.

Since it was from a set piece that has to be disappointing to Newcastle coaches Dowie and Shearer.

Bassong and Beye are having solid games in central defense,  but going forward Newcastle have not been able to string a couple of passes together and they seem to lack drive and confidence. Certainly Owen and Butt need to step up and take some responsibility for the side.

A goal could change things quickly, but Newcastle will need to get one early in the second half, because a defeat today and we will in all likelihood face relegation with both side below us picking up points this afternoon.

And Middlesbrough even won a game, when they beat Hull 3-1 at the Riverside, to move above us in the league, so if nothing changes in the final 45 minutes, we will be second bottom of the league and still 3 points from safety.  Would you believe it?

Let’s hope Shearer gives the players a real roasting at half time – they deserve it.

Can we not score goals anymore?

Comments welcome.

Awful challenge, deserved the yellow, but really we had no right complaining there, we DID take the advantage, so why shouldn’t Stoke?

  • 14 BT9MAG // Apr 11, 2009 at 5:55 PM

Welshmag – Ranger on the bench again, giving him invaluable experience for our Championship season next year…

  • 15 Weezertron // Apr 11, 2009 at 5:55 PM

he made the wrong sub there.

should have been Jonas for butt, not guthrie.

Gutierrez’s crossing might not be up to scratch but lets face it – he’s been on the pitch for 5 minutes and already been involved in practically every semi-decent move we’ve had…Appalling decision leaving him out of the starting line up Shearer!

  • 33 BT9MAG // Apr 11, 2009 at 6:03 PM

Butt has been terrible, he can’t even pass a ball along the floor along the floor! He passed it into Owen there about a foot in the air and at pace, that is ridiculously hard to control successfully!

He then makes a decent run and literally runs the ball out of play….useless!

  • 34 Ashley Hole // Apr 11, 2009 at 6:06 PM

BOO BOO THESE F****** OUT…..THE END.

Why are we still playing Nicky Butt and Shola Ameobi?

Ed, Is there ANY way we can request that both players not be played?

We need guthrie in the middle!

Lets start playing our Best players!
    Owen is not even sharp

  • 59 BT9MAG // Apr 11, 2009 at 6:19 PM

The 2 substitutions have proved to be very successful, beggers the question – why weren’t they on from the first minute though?

  • 61 BT9MAG // Apr 11, 2009 at 6:24 PM

Absaloute carbon copy – Butt gets played in with a lovely through ball – he runs the ball out of play…

    minute and a half…

  • 63 toonoholic // Apr 11, 2009 at 6:28 PM

    just 1 point :(

  • 64 BT9MAG // Apr 11, 2009 at 6:28 PM

    Pffft, 2 points dropped!

We’re in massive trouble and in my opinion it’s all down to a poor starting line-up…

Guttierez and Carrol were by far the best players on the pitch today – should have been on there for the full 90!

  • 65 TheToonKing // Apr 11, 2009 at 6:29 PM

oh well, we got a lucky draw but that won’t be enough to save us and the way we played was just horrid…

  • 66 ELFER // Apr 11, 2009 at 6:30 PM

For me the draw is something! We gained 1 point on sunderland and the other teams, which is ok. Surely, we all expected a win, but this ground is hell and we should be thankful.

Next is our favourite ground at whit heart lane and maybe we can win there!

  • 67 TheToonKing // Apr 11, 2009 at 6:31 PM

Shearer made a mistake with the starting 11 but at least got the subs spot on, except maybe he should have taken Nolan off for Guti………still piss poor play though…

  • 68 Brutooon // Apr 11, 2009 at 6:31 PM

Caroll did well for the last year than Ameobi did in 10 yearss !!!

Caroll + Gutierrez to start next match…

its not a well deserved one points, its a bad 2 pointers drop…

  • 69 Marty-Toon // Apr 11, 2009 at 6:32 PM

We were kucky to get a point today…….
They hit the post ,we had to clear off the line…..
Everything changed when Shola came off.
    SHEARER take the hint man
Carroll has to start next match end of story

  • 70 Marty-Toon // Apr 11, 2009 at 6:33 PM

    BUTT was crap
Much better with Nolan and Guthrie in there and Duff did ok on the wing when we went 4-4-2

  • 71 Ashley Hole // Apr 11, 2009 at 6:33 PM

Why Jonas….and Caroll did not start?..please tell???

  • 72 Christoon // Apr 11, 2009 at 6:34 PM

…please say thats the nail in the coffin for ameobi, carol was brilliant, guttsy and strong, coudnt fault owen, the only way he got the ball was by dropping back, nolan and butt were rubish, i honestly believe central midfield was the biggest problem. no one to dictate play at all!!!

and as usual ref creates stokes goal

  • 73 G 2 // Apr 11, 2009 at 6:35 PM

Barton back next week hopefully, him and Guthrie can be the difference! Said all season Butt is useless!

Carrol and Owen should be upfront.

  • 74 WELSHMAG // Apr 11, 2009 at 6:35 PM

Ranger and Caroll up front next game.

  • 75 Ashley Hole // Apr 11, 2009 at 6:36 PM

    …Think:

    Given

    S Taylor Beye Bassong Enrique

    Milner Dyer Barton Jonas

    Owen Martins

  • 76 JJJ // Apr 11, 2009 at 6:36 PM

Ameobi had a cr@p game again but Michael Owen was even more ineffective…
I hate that slow f#cking week little f@ggot! If anything good comes out of being relegated it will be that Owen doesnt sign a new contract.
And anyone on this blog that thinks Owen is a good player can go _%$% # % #%#%.

    Harper – very average
    Beye – quality
    Bassong – good
    Coloccini – average
    Taylor – good
    Enrique – good
    Jonas – average
    Butt – useless
    Nolan – average
    Duff – useless
    Owen – useless
    Carrol – potential
    Oba – good

That is how I rate our squad that regularly plays.

I would love Owen to get injured because it would force the manager to play someone with some pace and power. And it thankfully I wont have to hope to hard most days the little f@g get injured on his own.

  • 77 Toon_Factor // Apr 11, 2009 at 6:37 PM

Credit to the defense they were fantastic, Nolan was good too for a change

  • 78 howie17 // Apr 11, 2009 at 6:37 PM

lads i cant believe people are disappointed with a point. how many teams have got a result at stoke? you could probably count them on one hand. a point gained as far as i am concerned. many plus ponits to take. carroll wil start in place of shola next week. believe in shearer. if and its a big if, we can beat pompey, boro and fulham we will survive.

  • 79 JJJ // Apr 11, 2009 at 6:38 PM

If Shearer drops Coloccini then surely he should drop Butt too, the dick was spraying passes into the stands all day.

at least butt’s out there lookin for the ball, unlike some who hid out there. he played better than nolan and guthrie, although it was nolans best peformance so far, but that wasnt hard considering how hes played so far

  • 83 JJJ // Apr 11, 2009 at 6:40 PM

    howie

An away point is not a bad result, but we’ve got ourselves in a predicament where its not good enough o avoid the drop.

  • 84 Toon Graeme // Apr 11, 2009 at 6:42 PM

Ameobi did nowt – carroll did more in x mins!!

Mo headless chicken – Im sure he got a header on goal though – which was easily saved.

We still in bottom three but hey – its point and could have made all the difference.

Spuds away next week – If we play like that in second half against spuds – no problems in getting 3.

Stoke possession was rubbish in second half.

  • 85 Big Dave // Apr 11, 2009 at 6:43 PM

I am 99% sure there was only 3 teams that beat stoke at home manure and everton were 2 of them

  • 86 howie17 // Apr 11, 2009 at 6:44 PM

all im saying is if we go down, i know the games i will think of where we could have taken more. newc 1-2 hull, newc 1-2 bburn during keegan crisis and newc2-2 stoke, newc 2-2 wigan with late equalizers and hull 1-1 newc where we dominated. we got one more point than villa, arsenal, spurs or sundland did at the brittania

  • 87 Big Dave // Apr 11, 2009 at 6:44 PM

Toon Graeme to be fair to Mo what service is he getting ?

  • 88 Ross // Apr 11, 2009 at 6:45 PM

nicky butt is like a pitching wedge man, tries to spray them left and right and they go out on the full. I think him and Nolan have both been poor if im honest, Nolan hasnt done anything since arriving bar going in with his studs up.
Andy Carrol steps up again. A true Geordie and he looks like he’s really up for the fight. The sheer aggression in his celebration proved that he’s just as much a fan as he is a player. Wor Al, take note. Ameobi shouldnt be seeing another minute of first team action for the remainder of this season. You’ve got a young, hungry born and bred, goalscoring target man in the mould of Carrol, use him!

  • 91 Obafan // Apr 11, 2009 at 6:46 PM

    Harper: nothing to blame today.

Beye: fantastic defender; one of the few who wants to die for the shirt

Bassong: not always that certain today. I think it worked better when he was on the left hand side.

Edgar: that guy hos not one time disappointed me; he should get his chance more often.

    R. Taylor: AWFUL player; who told he was good at set pieces? He cannot pass the first man; he is as bad as Ameobi.

Guthrie: did not see too much of him today

Nolan: figher, but always on the edge with his tackling. He plays on the position where we need creativity and he has zero creativity.

Butt: AWFUL player. How did he even manage to play for ManU??? I cannot believe it; he cannot pass, cannot run, has got zero technics and his tackling is awful.

Duff: one good cross, which lead to the equalizer. Not good enough on that position.

Owen: I say it once again; he is a DISASTER. He hasn’t done anything to earn the captaincy. He was none existend today. As captain he should lead the troops, but he does nothing.

Ameobi: AWFUL player. Why does every manager make the same mistakes, by playing Ameobi? Even a blind man can see that he is a waste of space. With him on the pitch the team is down to 10 men. I do not want to see him anymore!

Carroll: FANTASTIC header and if I might be a bit harsh, he should have scored twice! But he is one of the few who wants to die for the shirt. Should start next week at WHL.

Guti: was full of energy as always; his end ball is not a success this season, but he should have started today.

Shearer: was wrong in his starting choices, but he had the guts to change when necessary and it took off. Tho’ 1 point is not enough today!

  • 92 JJJ // Apr 11, 2009 at 6:47 PM

    Completely agree Ross

Oh yes, and one thing Im not sure that I may or may bot have mentioned.

Oh wait did I already say that? ;-)

  • 93 howie17 // Apr 11, 2009 at 6:47 PM

owen relies on service, not his fault. 1 big positive was how good edgar was. won almost evrything in the air and far more commanding than the jittery colo has been. i have a feeling we may never see colo in a black and white jersey again this season.

  • 98 Stuart79 // Apr 11, 2009 at 6:53 PM

He’s dissapointed that it took so long for Oba to tell him about the injury!

He needs his ass kicking anyway!

  • 99 JJJ // Apr 11, 2009 at 6:53 PM

    howie,

Even when Owen gets service he is out paced and out powered by the defenders who simply brush him aside.
His first touch is no good and he cant hold the ball up, and he doesnt have the skill or technique to beat a man one on one (where he once could with his pace) so he ends up making “intellegent” runs into no mans land where the defender tracks back and pushes him aside or runs him out for a goal kick.

If he relies on service so much to the point that he needs everything put on a platter and he cannot offer anything other than poaching guilt edge opportunities then WTF are we playing him for? And paying him 110 000 a week.

Face it, he is finished and anyone who cant see that is living in the past (the distant past).

I’d only agree with you if we play with three up front.

Like you said, he needs impecable service to be effective and hes not going to get any space unless we have Obas pace creating that or at least two very attacking wingers to stretch the play (which we dont have).

  • 105 Shot Bru // Apr 11, 2009 at 7:04 PM

Poor tactics from Shearer today. We played with no width until he brought on Jonas and replaced the totally ineffective Strolla with Carrol. Mainly long ball b$llox like last week. Just play 4-4-2 especially if you’re gonna pick mainly british players as it’s all they seem to know. Carrol was excellent today.

  • 106 jimiley // Apr 11, 2009 at 7:11 PM

    Shearer was really lucky today.
PLAYED THE WRONGLAYED THE WRONG FORMATION ANDTHE PWRONG TEAM. CARROLL AND jONAS HAD TO BE ON FROM THE BEGINNING. Shearer showed his inexperience. Surely Stroller cannot play again until JK returns in the fizzy. We needed the 3 points. We looked relegation material for three quarters of the game. Butt has to be dropped asap.

Stoke didnt make it easy – yet again defence cock up lead to that header.

granted MO didnt get much service, but when he dropped back he didnt do nowt – didnt win one high ball from what I saw and when he did have the ball got muscled off it.

    Look at the positives:

Beye – getting back to his best
    Bassong – back but rusty
Jonas – what a change when he came on
Carroll – Andy – love ya son.
Edgar – one of the best performances Ive seen from him – ever.

Different type of game – very physical and could have been worse.

Keep the chins up lads. Another week under Shearer and its Spuds away.

1 point good or bad. Good in the sense that it will give us some courage. Bad as I think 3 points would have been real boost. We should target atleast 1 point from Spurs game now. I think Martin’s news was shock to everyone including Shearer. Its bad on martin’s part, why he delayed it to end for communicating. I think also at same time Shearer has now seen who gives his best on ground and I think he will play now Jonas and Andy every game. I want to see Andy given more time. I think he has already scored 1 is every 2 games he played.

Shearer dropped a bo”ick not playing Carroll from the start. Ameobi will never be good enough. Alan will get stick for that decision. We looked like we have gotten worse not better.

Michael Owen was easily pushed off the ball and looked like a little boy compared to their man mountain defenders.

The best we can do is this.

    ——————Harper—————-
    Beye—–S.taylor—Bassong-Enrique
    –Jonas——–Guthrie——–Duff—-
    ——————-Owen——————
    ————Ranger–Carroll————

Have to say the team looked poor today and we will need to do better than that in the next two games.

Why did Newcastle start with 10 players ?
One man missing Ameobi, How on earth did he start. He’s absolutely crap. If they pick him again they deserve to go down. Martin want his backside kicking for his feeble excuse few hours before the start saying he was injured.
Please pick players on merit. At least the central defenders played their socks off.
The best move by Shearer replacing the man who never was Ameobi & Carroll not only scored a goal he helped the defence out & gave 100%
