Alan Shearer has come out this morning and said he had a good talk with Mike Ashley before he took the job, and let him know he thought the upper management had made many mistakes at the club this season, and that’s why we are struggling with relegation right now. He also talked to them again this last week.
Alan Shearer – manager of Newcastle United
Shearer discussed the situation with Mike Ashley upon accepting the job and expects the Newcastle owner to avoid a repeat of the errors next season. We hope that’s what happens and that Mike has the sense to get Shearer to commit full time to Newcastle, even if we do go down.
This is what Alan said this morning:
“I’ve made my feelings known to the necessary people,” “They are well aware of their mistakes and other people’s mistakes.” “I think they know what’s been done right and what’s been done wrong. Staying in this league will give them the chance to rectify that.”
“The squad is unbalanced. You can’t go into a season with one person in one position. At some time that player is going to get injured, as has happened with Jose Enrique at left-back.”
“I knew the situation when I took the job, so I’m not complaining.” “We had meetings before I took it and we’ve had meetings over the past week about what we believe has gone right and what’s gone wrong. They are definitely aware.”
“They’re new to football and they’re going to make mistakes, but there have been some big mistakes.” “Whose fault is it? Everyone will have their own opinion on that. But it’s important the same mistakes aren’t made again.”
Good and tempered words from Alan, because you don’t want the criticism to be too severe at this stage of the season, but we think Ashley knows he’s made a right pig’s ear of managing the club this season. We hope Mike is savvy enough to learn from his mistakes, as it looks like Derek Llambias is better than we first thought – but of course our opinion of him last year couldn’t be much worse than it was.
But we’ve been quite surprised at how Derek seems to come across quite well, now he has finally started talking to the fans.
We don’t really know what’s gone on behind the scenes of course, but we know Shearer will know about the things that did happen, and it’s a good bet he thinks Dennis Wise was part of the problem, but he’s gone now thank goodness.
We don’t know what will happen in the summer but if Alan loves the job like it seems he does, then it may be a good decision to announce before the end of the season that he will be staying as manager, whatever happens.
Maybe that will have a positive impact on the players – and it certainly will have on the loyal and dedicated Newcastle fans. But we’re starting to think more of our players have to be men and step up to the plate, because a lot of them are acting like they’ve been pampered for too long.
Now is the time for them to show they are men and be worthy of wearing the very famous black and white striped shirt.
