Sebastien Bassong The Top Player At Newcastle This Season

When we have our poll on the last day of the season who was Newcastle’s best performing player this season, it’s very likely that Sebastien Bassong will come out on top.

Sebastien Bassong – top player at Newcastle this season

And last year’s winner, also in his first season at the time, Habib Beye has come out today on the official site and said how the powerful young Frenchman can be a leader at Newcastle.

And it turns out that Beye  already knew about Basssong before he signed for Newcastle last August, and was always confident his fellow Parisian would develop into a top player. We wonder if he knows any other good young players in France right now?

Habib talked to Newcastle United TV this morning:

“I knew about Sebastien before he signed from watching the French league and he was a promising young player for FC Metz,” t

“I try to help Sebastien because he is young and it is his first year in a new country.” “But I think he has shown his quality and has been one of our best players this season.”

“And if he continues to develop like he has he will be a big leader for the team.”

We agree with Habib and think he is spot on, but the first thing the Newcastle hierarchy will need to do after the last game of the season, whether the club are relegated or not, is give this lad a significantly improved contract to keep him at the club.

And quite honestly it’s almost like Sebastien is already a leader at the club, and look what happened when he missed that game with Liverpool, at the end of December.

If we do take the drop, there will be even more pressure from clubs like Arsenal, but we’re sure other bigger clubs than Newcastle are now, will also be more than interested in the lad this summer.

We’ll just have to wait and see what transpires, but if we take the drop we’ll lose our top players, at least in terms of their wages.

And it would appear that Habib will be partnering Seb in central defense for maybe the rest of the season at Newcastle, because we doubt if Shearer will want to introduce Coloccini back into the mix, after the Argentine has made too many mistakes this season.

Comments welcome.

Great player but Habib should be our captain when Owen leaves. When Taylor comes back Beye needs to be played at right back as this is where he is most constructive

He will be off to arsenal at the end of the season. Andy (the great white hope)Carrol gets my vote. Those corn rows were comedy genius. Awful player but a comedy genius. Collocini and Ameobi have also been a real joy to watch!

Completely agree. Our only really good buy in recent windows, I reckon we would be level with WBA if we didn’t have him.

What about Kevin Prince Boetang, Alan Hutton, Chris Gunter?

KP and Gunter will be decent though when they move away 🙂

Benny: I’m beginning to question whether you really are a free-lance reporter, mainly because alot of your comments are extremely bias and subjective.

Now I can understand why you maybe freelance.

Isn’t freelance another way of saying unemployed?

Benny: Your banter on this site is actually now becoming annoying, but you obviously get a kick out of it.

The best thing is that most people don’t rise to it nowadays. I remember when you used to get so much stick, which most of the time was going too far.

Leopard and spots spring to mind!

Sick of this spurs fan coming on here widing people up. I come on here to the opinions of fellow toon fans and people with something objective to say. If I want to hear about spurs I’ll visit your blog. Benny if you have nothing to contribute please don’t bother…

Bit off subject but the following article from the Mirror is very good and I think sums up the club & fans including ex pats like me who though I have lived in the south for the past 28 years I am fiercely protective of anything from the North East especially Newcastle & Newcastle united

Every Simon Bird article I have read has been pro toon as if he supported Newcastle. I think it was because he questioned JFK’s decision to give the players a day off on his first day.
