This is the time when things in the relegation struggle will get interesting, as we could well see some surprising results.
Alan Shearer – working around the clock to save Newcastle – can he do it?
This weekend Newcastle will know all the results of the other relegation clubs, before the lads play Pompey on Monday night.
But surely the job has to be somehow to try to win every game – and even at Liverpool with the Reds now presumably out of the title race, we could even look to get something there too.
That has to be the aim in any case.
Alan Shearer talked today about the relegation race:
“Over the next few weeks in a lot of our games we will be playing last.” “Whether that will be a help or a hindrance, I am not quite sure.”
“What you cannot afford to do, though, is look over your shoulder and rely on other teams.” “We are in a position now where, if we get ourselves right, then we will be OK.”
“If we concentrate on ourselves, get the results and not worry about what other teams are doing.”
“No-one is hoping more than I am that I can keep this football club up, I promise you.”
That’s what we have been saying for some months now, but usually in the next game Newcastle are beaten again, and they do not play well.
But that pattern just has to stop on Monday night, and we really do need all 3 points so that we can create a spring-board to safety.
Failure to do that will bring considerable doom and gloom to Newcastle fans.

Comment #4The game on Monday will be the turning point of our free fall. Hopefully we will win the game and gain much needed confidence, and then we are still in business for PL survival.
Lose or draw on Monday, don’t want to think about it.

That is quite a strong team. Pompey will scrape a 1 nil win and virtually relegate the hapless barcodes in the process.

Comment #6we can’t actually save ourselves as we are reliant on teams above us dropping at least 4 points and of course us gaining at least 4 over the next 5 games.
