Two Years Of The Newcastle United Blog

Today is the two year anniversary of the day The Newcastle United Blog was first founded.

nufc-emblem

Of course since then, when Glenn Roeder was still manager, the club has been bought by Mike Ashley for close to £137M, and he has pumped over £100M additional funds into the club, but to little avail, as we are the lowest we’ve ever been in the Premier League at this time of the season.

And of course this season will go down as one of the worst in living memory, especially if we end up getting relegated.

The club has had Glenn Roeder, Sam Allardyce, Kevin Keegan, Joe Kinnear and Alan Shearer as managers over the last couple of years, and you can also throw in Chris Hughton, who has had a couple of tough spells as interim manager this season.

So that’s six managers in two years, and would you believe that when Mike Ashley took over the club, almost two years ago, he stressed that stability was what the club had been lacking.

Oh well.

Of course we are now in deep relegation trouble, and could well be playing in the Championship next season, and that would be both disastrous and embarrassing for our proud club, which has had such a wonderful tradition over the years.

Newcastle is supported by the best fans in the land, and if some people still don’t believe that, tell us at which other club, second bottom of the league, and playing hopelessly all season, can play in front of a sold-out stadium of over 52,000 fans? Only at Newcastle.

But we continue to try to look on the bright side, and three consecutive home wins can save us, but the players need to somehow wake up from their comatose state of being, and remember which club they are playing for.

Some stats on the site.

  • We have published 6,270 articles over the last couple of years, which is an average close to 5 each day of the week, including weekends
  • The site has received more than 307,400 comments from our readers on those articles, which is an average of around 421 comments every day, including weekends
  • We have had close to 18M total hits
  • We have had almost 7 million unique visitors at some time come visit the site, including fans from other clubs of course
  • I get up around 4:00 am EDT every morning to review the news, and start writing the articles, equipped with some strong coffee
  • We have made £12.59 in advertising over those two years of solid hard work

Guess which stat above is the one that is not true?

The goal of the blog has been very simple from the start, and has in general worked quite well:

To provide analysis and insight on the football stories associated with the Newcastle United Football Club, from a fan’s perspective, to the many Newcastle fans scattered around the world

To solicit comments, views and opinions from our readers throughout the world on these stories.

To increase the world-wide support of our club world-wide.

We thank our readers for the support they have given us over these two years, and the biggest problem we’ve had, is to keep the comments decent and appropriate for all to read.

You can help us if you just give us your opinions on our stories, give us an alternate view, or some new ideas on the stories, but please be civil to other readers and refrain from using bad language – we’re all in this together.

Howay The Lads!!

Thanks,

Dr. Ed Harrison – founder and author

Well Ed, congratulations and happy anniversary!

But most of all, thanks for providing a place for fans to “gather” on line to share our woes and the occasional joy in supporting Newcastle United.

    Best wishes.

May I pass along my congratulations Ed for a job well done. I did not think anyone was as mad as me getting up at 4 am each day, I put it down to age or perhaps excitement as to what will happen at our beloved club today to give us another sleepless night.

You are truly worthy of praise for giving the fans a platform to vent their spleen – get rid of frustration or throw their opinion into the ring. It would be nice if some would leave their obsenties for another time and place but that is life.

Thank goodness for the Geordie sense of humour it keeps us going. Having supported the team now (by attending most games) for over 57 years I have been I think through it all, nothing as crazy as this last couple mind but I have been through some desparate times.

If anyone has a calculator I came on board with my Dad in 1952 now they were the glory years. I had the honour of pulling on that great black and white shirt as aschoolboy then a junior and cleaned Jackie Milburns boots, been thumped (in the nicest way by Jimmy Scoular – to harden me off you understand) and had Bobby Mitchell run rings around me just for fun but I am still here to tell the tale.

Again thanks Ed for you sterling efforts.

    Dear Dr. Harrison,

I am a fan of NUFC from Hong Kong who really appreciate your endeavour.

My wonder is that where else we could found a better Blog than yours. I understand waking up at 4:00am every morning is something hard to sustain, both physically and psychologically.

Indeed, is there no other way aside from shutting down the site? is it possible to hire an assistance to shoulder your work load? I believe most of your readers would not mind to donate a dollar or two to support you! Anyway, it is just my sentiment.

Last but not least, I want to express my highest gratitude to you, not only for your efforts, but also your passion!

    Best regards,
    Jeff

Thanks heaps for all this Ed, I live in New Zealand so i don’t have a tv station that updates me on football news or anything so I use this site as my general updater on whats happening at Newcastle. I do get to watch the occasional game, although its on in the early hours of the morning due to time difference.

    Thanks from NZ

Best fans in the land? Most fickle! The fans only returned when shearer turned up. I remember the carling cup game against spurs at sjp when half the stadium was empty and the geordies were outsung by the travelling yids for 90 minutes.

This season alone the fans have turned on Ashley, Wise , Keegan , The players, Kinnear, Hughton, Calderwood, Back on Ashley and now some are questioning shearer and dowie. This best fans in the world rubbish, is an urban myth. Having said that it is only geordies who come out with it.

I just want to add my thanks to you too Ed for all the hard work you have put into this blog for us to enjoy over tha past 2 years. Those statistics make quite awesome reading.

Selfish I know but I find it hard to accept that come the end of the season it will be no more. I just hope that there is something that can be done to make sure this blog is still here to carry on the Newcastle saga.

Are you aware Ed that you are sharing your second anniversary with St George’s day too – England’s national day?

Once more many thanks Ed from another of your faithful bloggers.

There’s nowt to say that hasn’t been said already – great site, and responsible for many a misspent hour at my desk. (Easier to do if you have graphics switched off on your browser!)

Thanks for the best work distraction on the web, Ed. I have no idea how you do that 4am thing – I only ever see that time from the other end, and my eloquence tends to suffer a smidge…

Thanks Ed – fantstic site. I don’t comment a lot but read it avidly to keep up with Toon news and hear everyone’s opinions regarding the latest happenings at SJP. I really hope you have a rethink (selfish I know) about closing the blog at the end of the season as it will leave such a void for a lot of people. Congrats again for great work

Been a pleasure reading the Blog Ed and I think it is fitting that it will end the same time as our last day in the premiership…I mean who wants to get up at 4 in the morning to write a report on newcastle v west brom next season.

Next season will be poor as well fizzy pop mid table fodder.

Best of Luck for the future I don’t really plan to participate much on the blog very much over the remaining games as it is just too depressing.

The blog is going? I wondered why everyone was sucking up. It’s a really good blog but getting up at 4am is your choice mate, you kind of make it sound like you have to, when you don’t. You could just let someone over here (England) take it over when you get rid, but I guess you don’t want anyone else taking the credit, which is a bit selfish if true.
Cheers for the 2 years of the blog.
