Portsmouth Is A Must-Win Game – Steve Harper

Steve Harper has only just become Newcastle’s number one goalkeeper after 16 years at the club, and Steve wants to ensure the club remains in the Premier League next season.

Steve Harper – Newcastle need fans as 12th man

Steve today has urged Newcastle fans to roar Newcastle United to victory on Monday night against an in-form Portsmouth side.

3 points from that game could well leave Newcastle just a single point from safety with still 4 games to go, although our next game is at Liverpool.

But a win will give the lads some spirit and confidence, and if we can go on to win our last two homes games after Portsmouth – against Middlesbrough and Fulham, there is every chance we can survive – but we must start winning games, and it has to start on Monday night.

The Newcastle Club will distribute 50,000 black-and-white cards, 20,000 flags and 1,000 scarves before the kick-off on Monday night, and goalkeeper Harper has today asked the Newcastle fans to raise the roof at the start of the game, to spur on the Newcastle team.

Steve said:

“We’ll need a full house with everybody behind us roaring us on,” “We need the fans more than ever during these three home games.”

“They can be our 12th man. We need 52,000 Geordies screaming us on because the situation is a difficult one.”

“I would quite happily take an 8-7 win! We just need three points. The gap is four points at the moment and that’s too many.”

“We’ve got to narrow that gap. We keep saying if we get that win the teams above us will be looking over their shoulders but we’ve got to do ourselves a favor starting on Monday night.

“It’s a must, must-win. We’ve got three massive home games and we’re going to need every ounce of support.”

Steve has been steady if not spectacular since he came in for Shay Given in January, but he is a very safe goalkeeper, which is what we need during the run-in.

How Newcastle got into this position in the league is amazing, but when you have just one win in 17 games, you’re not going to be too high in the league, that’s for sure.

The players need to wake up – and play with pride and spirit for Newcastle United, a club steeped in history and tradition.

We need some heroes for Newcastle on Monday night, if we are indeed to get the win that can spark our hopes of survival.

Howay The Lads!!

Does anyone think it will be a sell out on Monday?

OOooh I wonder what colour card I get. Will it be black or white.

Cards, flags, scarfs and Graham Danby aside, this situation could all have been avoided.

If the team can go out with a similar mindset and game as they did against Manure, Arsenal and Chelski in the first half – I think we will do ok!

Toon Factor – the pr spin has gone into ott extra time overtime.

There have been 11 players who could have avoided this situation and most of them have been playing ALL season.

But thats football and you gotta take the rough with the smooth. All part and parcel of being a toon fan these days.

Im ever the optimist – but my god has it been tested this season!!!

    I still say 2 – 1 to the toon.

I have to admit I hate all this stage-managed, choreographed, plastic fan stuff, and rank alongside teams who play some stupid pigbag music when their side scores so as to mask the lack of atmosphere. For my money they can stick their cards spelling out Howay the Lads, their twirly scarves and baritones leading the Blaydon Races. Fans don’t need to be told how to support, either by Sawdust or the PR management team at SJP. Give us half an excuse on the pitch and I’ll be yelling my lungs out. The rest of that embarrassing palaver is just for Sky and Setanta.
Anybody think the same, or do you all like looking at the back of the card over your head for the benefit of a TV audience?
