Newcastle vs Portsmouth – Match Preview – Now Or Never

nufc-crest4portsmouth-fc-crest_2008

Alan Shearer is hoping to bring back Spaniard Jose Enrique from a knee injury for tonight’s crucial game against Portsmouth, at St. James’ Park, which is being beamed live around the world on TV.

It looks like Joey Barton (foot) and Steven Taylor (ankle) remain doubtful and will not be included in the squad for one of the most important games we’ve ever played in the Premier league.

The St. James’ Park stadium will be packed to the rafters tonight, as manager Alan Shearer has specifically called upon the Toon Army to make their presence known tonight, in an attempt to lift our players.

While over the last 3 games in charge, Shearer has managed to introduce more organization into the side, he has not been successful yet in inspiring the lads to produce an all-out pride and passion performance, that can get us our first win in 9 games, and Alan and the Newcastle fans are hoping that will be possible tonight.

If we cannot get the win tonight things will be dire indeed on Tyneside, there’s no doubt about that. With Jose Enrique back we expect Alan to play a back four and even start the game in a 4-3-3 formation, and this is the team we’d like Alan to start tonight:

Harper
Edgar Beye Bassong Enrique
Nolan Smith Gutierrez
Martins Viduka Owen (c)
Subs: Krul Coloccini Butt Carroll Ameobi Guthrie Duff

We don’t think Alan will start that side, as he’ll probably want Nicky Butt starting in there somewhere, but surely now is the time to let Alan Smith play the defensive midfield role, and he’s shown he will play his heart out for the side, if given the chance.

Shearer has hardly held back in some of his bold team choices and substitutions, so it will be more than interesting to see who he starts tonight.

Alan has also failed to use a number of our more experienced players like Geremi and Cacapa, but we doubt he will change that policy now, as they will be just two of the players Alan will move out of the club this summer.

But we need players with the heart and spirit for the game tonight, and they will all need the mental strength to be able to win this game, whatever happens.

Newcastle’s performance in the last 17 games has been worse than pathetic, and that is why tonight has to be when all that changes.

Other teams, Hull, Middlesbrough and Sunderland all conspired to be beaten over the weekend, and that offers Newcastle an enormous opportunity to gain a full 3 points on those three teams. They must take this chance, if they are to avoid relegation this season, by their own efforts.

Failure to win tonight and it will almost be all over, and the team will have to hope that other teams are even worse than they are, in the final 4 games of the season.

Let us know what you think the starting eleven should be tonight.

Tonight is now or never time at Newcastle.

Howay The Lads- we can do it !

As much flak as he has had recently, I still believe it will be the goals of Owen that saves us.

The front three of him Viduka and Martins is too much for Portsmouth.

My biggest concern tonight is with the midfield. We have too many midfielders who have eratic tempers (Barton, Nolan, Smith, Butt) and if one of them got sent off we’d be doomed.

My starting 11 would definately not have Smith in it but if Shearer thinks he’s up to it then so be it.

How one of the most entertaining clubs in Britain/Europe and claimed as everyones second favourite club have fallen into such a state is beyond belief.

In all my years this game tonight is probably one of the most important and could shape the future of our club for the next few years.

I agree with your team Ed except for Nolan and Smith, only problem is who should be in there!
Barton obviously but not fighting fit… then who else?

Lets just hope tonight all 11 players picked and 50,000 plus are 100% up for this. Although Ashley doesn’t deserve the support, EVERY Toon fan deserves more from the team and EPL survival.

100% support and lets hope 100% commitment
from the team for the last 5 games.

    TOON ARMY……..

Easily our most important game of the season, but they have said that about the last god knows how many matches…

All I hope is that the team are UNITED tonight, with one clear focus of Beating Portsmouth, and beating them well… We proved that we can beat them once already this season, we can do it again.

I would like to see Big Al start the following tonight:

    GK: STEVE HARPER

    LB: JOSE ENRIQUE
    CB: SEBASTIEN BASSONG
    CB: HABIB BEYE
    RB: RYAN TAYLOR

    LM: DAMIEN DUFF
    DCM: ALAN SMITH
    RM: JONAS GUTIERREZ

    LF: OBA MARTINS
    CF: MARK VIDUKA
    RF: MICHAEL OWEN

SUBS: KRUL, EDGAR, NOLAN, CARROLL, RANGER.

If all is going well and we bag a goal or two, we can then afford to give Oba a rest and bring on Ranger as we don’t ant to burn him out completely, and swap out Viduka for Carroll.

But I’m sure that whatever team he sends out tonight will be ready for the fight, and the crowd can play a BIG part, we need to be hostile, sing out our hearts and really get to the Pompey players. Remember the atmosphere at Stoke? Imagine that with 50,000 of us!!

3 points for the lads, lets make sure we send those south coast Pikeys back home crying into their shandy!

    Ho’way the lads!!

I think Beye should play in his natural position of right back. Move Edgar or Colocini into the middle.

Beye n Geremi played really well together when we played the 4-3-3 last season but ofc we had Barton in the centre then!

I don’t think it’s our back 4 that is important tonight, it’s going to be our midfield and if they can cover the defence and supply the forwards.

Coloccini shouldn’t get anywhere near the squad nevermind start, the guy is a liability.

The midfield need to be bursting with energy tonight, and they need to find that killer ball to our forwards, something which has been seriously lacking all season…

    —TAYLOR—BEYE—-BASSONG—-ENRIQUE
    ———NOLAN——GUTHRIE—–JONAS
    ———OWEN——VIDUKA—–MARTINS

    cannot lose to Portsmouth?

Butt and Smith should never be in the first 11…NEVER EVER EVER EVER

My nephew met Colo in a park where he was playing with his kids.

They asked if he would be staying if we were relegated and he said he’d be going to Argentina but if we do stay up he might stick around.

Please dont play Butt, his bad games and mistakes seriously out number his hand full of goals and odd steady performances and his legs have gone, i agree with others and Smith should be given the chance as he can at least pass a ball.
