Alan Shearer will not be able to see our Uruguayan midfielder Nacho Gonzalez in tonight’s FA Premier Reserve League fixture against Liverpool in Warrington (7.00 pm) – amazingly he is still injured.
Ignacio Gonzalez – still injured after 8 months
This player is approaching the injury record of the infamous Marcelino back in 1999, as he’s played just twice for Newcastle since he arrived on the last day of the transfer season last year, and has had an injured Achilles for over eight months.
With only 25 days of the season left, it now looks unlikely that Nacho will be able to help us out at all, even though our Uruguayan readers say he is a good player, but if he’s never fit what use is he?
Xisco will be involved tonight, and Academy Director and Reserve Team coach Richard Money is not surprised Shearer has taken such an active interest in the club’s Reserve side since his arrival as manager.
Good managers do that and Alan is no doubt interested to see just how good some of the youngsters are, since some of them may be coming through next season, and even more so if we do end up in the Championship.
Richard told the Evening Chronicle today:
“It is what good managers do.” “They have to take an active interest in what they have at the club, and Alan is going to do that in the short period which is left until the end of the season.”
“If you are a young player, and you are playing well, you would like to think you are going to have a chance.”
Richard Money will choose from the following squad for tonight’s game, which includes some of our best young up-and-coming talent in Fraser Forster, Ben Tozer, Brad Inman, Wesley NgoBaheng, Nile Ranger and Haris Vuckic.
Our youngsters have been a huge bright spot at the club this season, and maybe the only one.
Newcastle Reserves: Forster, Soderberg, Tavernier, Lough, Tozer, Grieve, Airey, Inman, Doninger, Godsmark, Donaldson, Baheng, Ranger, Danquah, Vuckic, Xisco.

Comment #81Nico, you’re not the only person on here who has seen Ignacio play outside of a couple of reserve appearences for NUFC. You have a point, he is indeed a creative player with vision, a player who can make goals and change a game with something a bit different. Of course, you are also right that is is something that has been sorely lacking in our central midfield this season, that’s why we got him, albeit on loan. However, even the very best in the world can’t just come back after so long and just turn it on again immediately. They need to regain match fitness, to regain focus and get back in the swing of things. With only four games left, our season may have run out by then. Hence, your fantasies of Nacho waltzing on to the pitch and changing Newcastle’s fortunes in five minutes may be somewhat far fetched. Hope not though!

Comment #82And Ed, your scapegoating of (non-geordie)injured players is becoming rather tiresome and childish. Especially that particularly snide one about Martins. Give it a rest and grow up!

If he is up to it remains to be seen. I believe he is one of the very few players in the world able to do so.. (coming back after long period of inactivity and play a monster game)
Any way.. without him (you can mark my words) Newcastle will at best.. win 1 game out of remaining 4, and will go down.
But you should read comment 52 once again. I believe Ed Harrison is intending to “wash your brains” with his anti Nacho Gonzalez campaign he seems to have started. I don’t ask you to believe what I say.. I just ask you all to think for yourself and not let Ed have the minimun impact on it.
And my point is:
Ed. Harrison said Nacho is injured again that’s why he doesn’t play today’s reserve match.. WELL I F*CKING WANT TO SEE THE PROOF THAT HE IS INJURED AGAIN (show me a link or something.. show me the source).. maybe Shearer is saving him for the real Liverpool game already.

Ed. why don’t you prove what u said.. give me proof.. source.. How do you know he is INJURED AGAIN?? I don’t find it on the Internet.. maybe u just want all users here to hate Gonzalez? Luckily there are still some people on here who can think for themselves.

Comment #86Regarding the Nacho injury – the medical team have to be at fault here, surely they must have known how serious it was and should have recommended he was sent back to Spain. It was pretty obvious he wasn’t going to play this season anyway.
Another one of our poor signings Xisco was subbed after about an hour of the ressies game after being non existent for the time he was on the pitch (although to be fair Liverpool were all over us and we looked poor throughout the whole team)

Comment #87I can’t see what you guys are on about – we keep getting told Nacho is near to playing for ressies but he then never makes it so either he is desperate to play and has been trying to hard to get back therefore aggravating his injury or the medical team are trying to rush him back – either way though the fault lies with the medical team more than Nacho

workyticket. I might not be the only one who watched Nacho play, but I live in Uruguay so I know a lot more about him than anyone else on here.
I will ask as many times as needed. Once again. ED Show me proof he is injured and he won’t play on the 3 May..
If you agree with me I want to see you includding him in your line-ups against Liverpool. Ed Harrison is just frustrated with results, I understand him.. but it is not Nacho’s fault. He is more than a decent player who has had bad luck and wants to change Newcastle’s shape.
Again I repeat.. Mark my words.. Without Gonzalez.. Newcastle gets just 1 win from the remaining 4 games (with a bit of luck too).

Comment #96Nah this is too much.. you want to beat Liverpool with that team I better leave.. you gotta be kidding yourself.
this guy doesn’t understand that Newcastle United has won just one game from the last 19? and now they will beat the top4 team in the world with these same players??
Some people are also claiming Newcastle is gonna win 3 of the remaining 4 games (when they won 1 of the last 19, I repeat as many times as needed).
The man for a change is Nacho Gonzalez. End of, period.
PS: Good luck in the Championship.

Comment #101No Toon Factor. He was likened to Zidane. For his elegant moves, and skills to distribute the ball. He was called the “brain” of our selection and hasn’t been able to play much for Uruguay either (for the same issue). If you understand some spanish have a read at what the current Uruguayan coach has to say about “Nacho” González: http://www.x-urugaming.com/foro/index.php?topic=2977.msg34243#new

Comment #103Stevep is right on this one – it’s irrelevant how good Nacho is. An achilles injury that required surgery should have automatically meant he was sent back to Valencia since he was never going to play any more than one or two games. This poses some interesting questions:
Did our medical staff keep telling the club that he would be fit soon, and getting it very wrong?
If the medical staff said he would be out for 6-8 months then why was he not sent back to get him off the wage bill – bearing in mind the club’s comments about the size of the wage bill. Did we cock up the loan agreement in the rush to sign him?
Was it hubris on the part of the management team and did they just refuse to send him back?
If he was Zidane c.2003 it still wouldn’t change the fact his injury means he’s unlikely to play at all this season.

“have a read at what the current Uruguayan coach has to say about “Nacho” González:”
I skimmed to the bit about Nacho, it was much the same as the impression I had of him. Funnily enough, I thought of Fabregas too though as Toon Factor mentioned. Hope he doesn’t go back to the Mestalla, as he’s just the kind of player we need.

Comment #112Why when we play with three up front do we continue to play Michael Owen in the hole between the front two? He offers nothing there. Surely dropping the big man in that role would make more sense, not only would it help us win more headers from goal kicks and clearences, it would also give the central defenders something more to think about. Against Portsmouth Campbell and Distin found Martins and Viduka a doddle. Sean Davis ruled the midfield and didn’t let Owen touch the ball. What does Michael Owen actually offer now he has lost his pace?

Today, searching if Nacho was really fit or not for Liverpool’s game I happened to read this: http://74.125.47.132/search?q=cache:v4gKbFwT1AYJ:forums.sundaysun.co.uk/viewtopic.php%3Ft%3D18759+Nacho+Gonzalez+is+fit+or+not%3F&cd=6&hl=es&ct=clnk&gl=uy
I have to say I agree 100%. Let’s play FTW. We can’t sit back and let them attack us. We can’t afford what Chelsea did against Barcelona. Two reasons: we neither have the same defensive arguments they have (great players like Bosinwa etc) nor have Gus Hiddink as a coach. Don’t get me wrong, Shearer is not bad but defensively Gus is the greatest on the planet. Look what he did with Russia, Korea, Australia and what he’s doing with Chelsea, now he got weapons!
Can’t wait till Sunday.

Guys don’t lose heart. I can see many are frustrated, and no doubt everyone is down. But we need to keep faith and just be behind our team. I know they are not good enough but do we have any other way. We should support them in this tough time.
About Liverpool game, I think we should play with caution. We need to make sure we don’t concede more than 1 goal. We should keep our goal average better than others and that will still give us a chance to survive by winning 2 more games.
