Alan Smith Fantastic On Monday Night – Alan Shearer

Alan Shearer is considering which side to play against Liverpool on Sunday, to get some points for Newcastle, but with the form of most of our players right now, that could be difficult.

alan-smith-211

Alan Smith – played well on Monday night

It looks like Alan Smith will retain his place in midfield after a solid performance on Monday night, which Shearer enthused about this morning:

“I thought Alan was fantastic,” “He gave us everything he had and justified his place in the starting line-up.”

“I thought he worked very hard. We made five changes against Portsmouth, we just wanted to try to freshen things up – to try to change things around.”

“That was the only reason that we did it.” “Kevin Nolan wasn’t injured. We were just trying something different – his time might come again.”

Smith could well be in the starting line up in each of the last 4 games, since he is willing to give every game all he has, and that’s what the side needs right now.

We don’t need any players who are feeling sorry for themselves, or who have already made up their minds the side is going down. Middlesbrough and Hull City are both too bad for that to be true.

Alan Shearer is faced with the task of preparing the side to somehow get a win in each of our last four games of the season.

Every game is a new opportunity to turn things around, and while the games are starting to run out, it’s still not too late to survive, but we need a win quickly. Maybe Liverpool will not turn up on Sunday.

Shearer spends all week talking about a more creative team and then sends out a midfield of Smith, Butt and Duff. Clueless.

Can you come up with a creative player at Newcastle?

Can’t blame Shearer and you can’t blame the players. It’s not their fault their not good enough.

The players are being asked to do something they can’t do. Everyone knew what positions we needed strengthening and we did fck all about it!

@dragonera – give the guy a break man – the alternative midfield is geremi, nolan, loven.
We aint got the players and you can hardly blame shearer for that.
Regardless of who plays we’ll likely get a hammering – midas himself couldn’t turn our crock of poo into gold

Spot on Stuart79, some people can’t see beyond the red mist at the moment. I personally thought the team WERE better, significantly so over the Spurs match, but they’re still showing lack of confidence and self-belief.

    Geremi or Smith.

I would choose Smith for pace and Geremi for skill with the ball.

That makes no sense or does it?

    “Can’t blame Shearer”….Are you having a laugh?

I certainly CAN name a more creative midfield than that.

    Duff—Smith—Guthrie—Gutierrez

Shearer is too scared to drop his mates i.e. Owen and Butt. Two player that can not contribute offensively and one of them cannot contribute AT ALL! (Owen)

Shearer persists with this 4-3-3, in a weak attempt to immitate what KK did last year, but it’s not working and he now doesn’t know what to do. I am not blaming him for everything as he is a new manager with little experience. However, even i know that a midfield of Smith, Butt and Duff will create nothing, so why doesn’t he? Has he watched these players at all since his retirement?

smith was good, id play him instead of butt, although butt played well on moday.

against l’pool id go with a midfield of:

    ————————-Butt—————————–
    Guthrie——Barton——-Smith———Jonas
    ———————-Dukes—————————

thats what personally id play and drop oba and owen with dukes as the lone striker, but we all know it wont happen dont we

dragonera – jeez man take a pill, you seem to think we have a load of creative talent hidden away somewhere and Shearers keeping it all to himself.
The problems were there long before Shearer took over or even JK for that matter – remember why KK actually left!
I prsume you were one of the “fans” that thought KK and then SBR had taken us as far as they could and that we needed new continental mgmt in to take us that bit further – you’re a joke man

It is not about scoring goals. It is about picking midfields that can pass (Guthrie), and stretch sides (Jonas). Are you seriously trying to tell me that

    Smith – Butt – Duff

    is a better midfield than

Duff – Smith -Guthrie – Jonas

    ?!

The people on this site are really pathetic sometimes. If JK would have put out that team against Portsmouth, people would be baying for blood, but because it was Shearer it is “the best he could do with the resources at his disposal”. NO

Did you really just say it’s not about scoring goals?

You can’t rely on your strikers scoring all your goals!

Midfield need to chip in. Not one of them players you say have the ability to split open a defence.

It’s not just them. We haven’t got one in the entire squad! It’s a disgrace man!

It doesn’t matter who we pick whether your four or my four or Shearers four, they CANNOT do what we need them to do!!!!!!

Were stuck between a rock and a hard place and whichever combination we try the players cannot do it.

That I’m afraid is NOT Shearers fault.

I agree our players aren’t great. However, you cannot tell me that Shearers POOR choice of midfield should not be held at least partially accountable. That midfield was a complete disgrace. Guthrie is our best CM aside from Barton. Yet both were on the bench. Jonas stretches sides and is the only midfielder that runs at defenders…left on the bench.

    Don’t talk shite man!

JK had a chance to do something about it in January and he brought us R Taylor who couldn’t get in Wigan’s team and Kevin Nolan who scores 1 goal a year and creates fck all! Why else would Bolton sell him?

Shearer hasn’t been afforded that luxury! Although I still blame the man who signs the cheques and he’s fckin screwed us all over!

You wanna have good side get good players, you wanna have a great side get great players but they cost money, Them are the words of Sir Alex Ferguson.

On that basis-If you wanna bad side buy bad players. Well congratulations NUFC you have sure achieved that one!

What you are basically saying is that all our players are poor so it doesn’t matter who is picked. In that case, if a midfield of Butt, Geremi, Nolan and Smith is picked, it will get ther same results as a midfield of Jonas, Guthrie, Barton and Duff. Nonsense.

Ive actually found myself agreeing with your posts recently but it looks like were back to type.

Shearer isnt to blame for this mess we had to throw everything at Pompey so 3 strikers was the obvious thing to do as it worked so well last season.

I think barring Liverpool Shearer will play 4-3-3 now virtually everyones back but it will be with different personnel, Butt looked out on his feet on monday.

As Smith has been used as a holding man in midfield for so many reserve matches prior to starting the other day, I think Al was testing out alternatives in preparation for replacing Butt. When Barton is fit i have a feeling Butt will be dropped.

    ———————-Harper——————
    —Beye—-Taylor———-Bassong—-Duff——-
    ——–Guthrie—–Smith——Barton————-
    ———–Owen—-Viduka—-Martins————–

I think we will start like that against Boro barring injuries, I personally would play Gutierrez from the start but i think he is now seen as an impact sub along with Carroll.

Boro and Fulham are totally different to the Portsmouth match as both have to take risks with both chasing points in the league for different reasons, Leaving gaps at the back and our strikers hopefully can do a better job of taking the chances they were gifted the other night.

Jonas doesn’t create anything, scores no goals and spends most of his time chasing back!

It was in midfield we lost our chance to beat Portsmouth, especially in the second half after Butt went off. They picked up every loose ball and we passed it to them more often than not.
Smith had at least an effort on goal and made one tackle on Pennant(?) that was within an ace of being a penalty which would have cost us the game. That is what you get with Smith – he is wholehearted but reckless and without much of a clue.
Having to play Duff at fullback cost us our only bit of midfield creativity. His was the best clean shot on goal we mustered all night.

You guys are mixing this all up. I am not blaming Shearer for everything we have done wrong. I am just saying, his choice of midfield against Portsmouth was poor and that he needs to drop the ineffective Owen as it is like playing with a 4-3-2 formation.

Monday was also Beye’s worst match in Black and white. He needs to be restored to centreback against Torres. Edgar will do ok at RB. He’s never let us down and I can’t understand why one decent performance by him is never rewarded with a start in the following match. We might actually find he gets better with a run in the side.

Once again everything you say goes back to the players that have been brought in and lack of money spent under this regime.

I can’t make this any clearer can I?

The players aren’t to blame. It’s not their fault their not good enough.

We have only one left back at the club and it’s costing us because our one and only creative(and I use that word very loosely) player is having to cover in that position!

Everything that is said about NUFC goes back to that fat, Tight, Spurs loving cockney wan*er.

No point worrying about that now, Stuart. Its done and dusted until the summer.
    – And the difference now must be, Shearer will have a free rein if he signs up to carry on. Ashley has run out of options. Nobody worth his salt or with any ambition will sign for JFK if Shearer leaves.

Dragonera, is there a suggestion Taylor (S) will be fit soon? Beye looked well out of sorts – glowering at Butt’s misplaced passes and the ineptitudes of his other teammates. He will need some convincing to stay if this keeps up.

Ideally, I’d play Edgar at LB so Duff can play in front of him as our only chance of a decent cross.

Martins is playing with a groin injury, that coupled with his real age of 59 is the reason for his lack of pace – Owen has lost his pace as he’s having to play with all his cash tied around his waist as he refuses to put it into a bank in case they lose it, viduka never had any pace so no change there
Guiterrez looks great running forward and in fairness tracks back a lot but his end product is almost always nowt

I don’t think that’s the point to be honest. It won’t matter if Shearer has a free reign on transfers as Ashley has no more money to put into the club.

Thst is why in my opinion he has to sell up. He cannot afford it anymore.

To be fair. Portsmouth have been defensively sound for the last few games with Campbell and Distin seemingly rediscovering the form that saw them do so well under Droopy the dog. It was only ever going to be a 1-0 type of game.

I reckon we have two choices in the summer, stick with JFK or Shearer, no decent manager will come to the toon for certain.
no doubt there’ll be a bunch of people shouting for Ketsbaia or some other mediocre foreign coach thinking that the toon are some huge draw that no manager can refuse, I can’t see that happening at all – if noone would take us on when KK left we’ll have no chance of recruiting someone decent when we’re in championship and thats def we’re we’ll be.
We’d struggle to beat my kids team at the moment – just face it man we’re sh!te
