Shearer Hints At New Michael Owen Contract

Alan Shearer has played his hand a little today by suggesting if he was a Newcastle fan (which he is), he would want Michael Owen to stay at Newcastle, assuming the club survives in the Premier League.

Alan Shearer watching Michael Owen in training

Alan talked about Michael Owen this morning:

“As a Newcastle fan I would like him in a Newcastle shirt next season so long as it’s in the Premier League,”

“I believe Owen in a Premier League side will score goals.” “Would I recommend he is given a new contract? That’s something to ask me at the end of the season if we can secure our status.”

“Write him off at your peril,” “The beauty as a player is that you always get the chance to have the last laugh.” “Yes he needs a goal. We would love him to score the goals but I have every belief in Michael Owen. Don’t doubt that.”

“To suggest he’s not as driven as he was 10 years ago is a slight on him and you don’t know his character if that’s the case. He’s still in love with football. Anyone suggesting differently is wrong.”

Of course Shearer knows all about the game of football and all about what it takes to be a top player, and it seems to us that Alan thinks Michael is still a top player and has lots of goals left in him.

Certainly he’s played quite well since Alan has been at the club, and has put in some good shifts for the team, without actually scoring.

It may turn out in the summer that Alan elects to keep most of the squad he inherited and augments it with say 5 top players. Fringhe players like Geremi, Cacapa and Xisco, plus some others would be unloaded.

That should be a good squad, if they play next season like they did last Monday night.

But we have to wait and not get ahead of ourselves, because we still need to earn our place in the top flight next season, starting today against Fulham.

Comments welcome.

  • I would prefer if he did not get a new contract. He isnt worth 120k a week wages. You should have players like Rooney and Torres for that money. Not suggesting we would sign them before you get any ideas. 😉

i hope he stays. If there is one person that can get the best out of Michael Owen it has to be ALan Shearer. But he is not worth 110 000 P a week!!!

    Sell Owen?
ONLY If we are able to get in a professional of the same class or better.

    Don’t Sell Owen?
He can be the roots to good quility signings.
Without him can we get someone of the same class and composure?
Rooney and Torres? – Will they sign for us?
We are not Man City. (Even city can’t is not able to sign some of the top star)
Owen is a good professional and can lead by example on the training ground young lads can gain alot from him on and off the field at least for now.
Newcastle needs professional players that does it job.

Owen might be even be more motivated now that Shearer is incharge.
Remember: For the TRUTH newcastle fans around the world

Please PRAY for our team Newcastle Utd to win on home soil against Fullham. OK!

Once again, I’ll be sayin my prayer in SINGAPORE.

    IT will helps.

Our club is different. We need to built from the ground. No matter where our standing are.

Yes, we do have some great history to boost about. BUT is was PAST already.

Tell me, which top stars would like to come to Newcastle and get slash week in week out?

What we need is professional around to guide some of those promising young lads to bloom and promote to the 1st team . And not just waste / drift away.

Some of the youngster needs to be guided on and off the field and they needs good example NOT bad ones.

Who agrees we should try to buy Chris Brunt in the summer- 9 goals and 3 assists is good for a left midfielder in the worst team in the premiership.

If Owen goes we should sign Darren Bent. He is probably better than Owen at this moment in time. Has pace and is good in the air.

He would be a good partnership with Dean Ashton. Although he is injured alot

Only away for a week and all of a sudden everyone reckons shearer is now doing a great job? Shocking!! 1 win wont save newcastle! I reckon hull could beat bolton and that would mean newcastle still needing 4 points. cant see it myself. Hull have been a disgrace since christmas and it just shows how poor newcastle are to have relied on hull picking up so few points to remain in the prem. I hope and believe newcastle will still get relegated as they deserve to go down .

fingers crossed for a fulham win and hull victory this weekend.

    love your old friend bennytoon.

stuart79- newcastle will struggle to attract any top players if they stay up. The club is a mess and i certainly cant see a player like bent who is at a big club swapping it for a team who will struggle again next season.

reetpetite- how exactly would a hull win leave us needing 4 points, that would put them 3 points ahead of us and we are 7 goals better off so unless they win 7-0 then we would only need 3 points u tit!

    I’m unsure about Owen.

He is our top scorer and I think he will come good again eventually. He’s also got a very professional attitude and is a good example to the younger players.

I don’t think he should be kicked out because he’s having a dry patch. All strikers get those from time to time and, as I said, I reckon he’ll get over that.

My concerns about Owen are whether is fitness will hold up and whether, even on good scoring form, he’s worth £100,000+ a week.

I’m happy to let Shearer decide that one!

Keep Owen i reckon but he would need to take a massive pay cut. I reckon he will score today. He is a good pro, you never hear about him fighting in bars or roasting sessions.:-] Im sure young Andy Carroll is loving have the 2 best English strickers in recent times to learn from.

How exactly do you know what will happen this summer?

Shearer is a big pull with players and if he gets money to spend the club can start going forward.

I would keep Owen if he wants to stay, With a much reduced contract regarding salary & appearances.
He’s model regarding younger players at the club

He’s never been the player he was after getting hurt in the World cup & everyone slows down after injuries & of course getting older.
Remember he’s played at the very top

Idiots… !!! How can you sell a play who can walk on a bosman. His contract is up. There will be no sale as he will either re-sign or walk.

stuart79- If shearer was still playing he would be a big draw for players who would want to play with him. I doubt good players would want to join a struggling team with few good players, an inexperienced manager and a chairman with little ambition. I hope you go down this season to put you out of your misery as you will only struggle again next season.

Shearer is already being linked with scharner ffs! Says it all really.
