Alan Shearer has played his hand a little today by suggesting if he was a Newcastle fan (which he is), he would want Michael Owen to stay at Newcastle, assuming the club survives in the Premier League.
Alan Shearer watching Michael Owen in training
Alan talked about Michael Owen this morning:
“As a Newcastle fan I would like him in a Newcastle shirt next season so long as it’s in the Premier League,”
“I believe Owen in a Premier League side will score goals.” “Would I recommend he is given a new contract? That’s something to ask me at the end of the season if we can secure our status.”
“Write him off at your peril,” “The beauty as a player is that you always get the chance to have the last laugh.” “Yes he needs a goal. We would love him to score the goals but I have every belief in Michael Owen. Don’t doubt that.”
“To suggest he’s not as driven as he was 10 years ago is a slight on him and you don’t know his character if that’s the case. He’s still in love with football. Anyone suggesting differently is wrong.”
Of course Shearer knows all about the game of football and all about what it takes to be a top player, and it seems to us that Alan thinks Michael is still a top player and has lots of goals left in him.
Certainly he’s played quite well since Alan has been at the club, and has put in some good shifts for the team, without actually scoring.
It may turn out in the summer that Alan elects to keep most of the squad he inherited and augments it with say 5 top players. Fringhe players like Geremi, Cacapa and Xisco, plus some others would be unloaded.
That should be a good squad, if they play next season like they did last Monday night.
But we have to wait and not get ahead of ourselves, because we still need to earn our place in the top flight next season, starting today against Fulham.
