Duff Has Been Brilliant For Us At Left-Back – Alan Shearer

One player who will come in for no criticism from us next Monday, is Ireland International Damien Duff.

damien-duff-99

Damien Duff – excellent season at Newcastle

The Dublin born player hasn’t had a good time of it at Newcastle, since he was signed in the summer of 2006.   But this has been his best season without doubt, and he’s already appeared 32 times for the team this year, and that’s 30 starts, and he’s scored 3 times.

That compares with 33 appearances (29 starts) and one goal in his first season (2006-2007), and 19 appearances (15 starts) and one goal last season.

The picture above is after he scored the winner in injury time, in the 2-1 win against Spurs last December.

And again Alan Shearer today has praised Damien for stepping in so brilliantly as a left-back in place of the injured Jose Enrique.

It was a hamstring injury to Jose Enrique that gave Damien his chance at left-back in recent weeks, and his performances have been excellent.

Alan Shearer paid a big compliment to Damien today:

“He’s been magnificent,” “We’re asking him to do a job which is slightly alien to him but you wouldn’t have thought so how well he’s played.”

“He’s looked like a natural and I couldn’t have asked for much more, either defensively or going forward.”

Damien needs another strong game against Villa, as he will probably be up against James Milner, and the very last thing we want to see on Sunday is James scoring against his old club.

Hate to be a kiljoy but Milner will out run Duff anyday.

On a positive note – He has slotted in well and plugged a gap that ideally should have been sorted last transfer window – but thats another story isnt it!

Any word on Bassong’s red card appeal hearing?

I know it will be upheld – but you can live in hope.

Having watch the replay over and over and over again – you can see the tug then they continue on for x feet and then Fulham man drops like a sack of crap

lets dream a little… sit back, close your eyes….

milner scores in the 13th minute….

…… owen scores in the 40th……

    jonas scores in the 88th…..

i wonder how quickly it’ll be for ed to turn around and suggest keeping both?

he can be a fickle sod, but with all the passion and drama going on with us lot, its excuseable.

would be a grand old result tho!!

Come on Duffers if you score the winner on Sunday all will be forgiven for the first two seasons.

    conspiracy theories…

fergie will enjoy exacting revenge on shearer while doing his old mate brown a favour. fergie has always liked brown, with whom they share a mutual friend in allardyce, and even got brown the derby job a few years back. he has also never forgiven shearer for turning him down. allardyce menawhile harbours no love for the ton after been sacked by ashley…

not to mention brown, a native of south shields is a sunderland fan who never tires of telling everyone how he was once beaten up by toon fans at st james as a boy… so, fergie got no reason to want to hel the toon, and maybe old allardyce will be bending his ear even more….

    however…

once brothers in arms on the motd sofa, shearer and oneil are friends, so much so that oneil might even field a weakened side and help his old colleague off the hook. oneil also quite fancies picking up owen on the free in the summer and is prepared to field a few kids in exchange for first refusal. owen being dropped last week for a “slight groin strain” and may yet still miss next sunday. meanwhile, shearer might also press lineker into service asking him to phone oneil and remind the villa boss that his motd gigs could be dependant on letting the toon win. after all, there’s that all expenses paid, five star trip to south africa next summer to think of…

    … trust no-one….

    (as stolen from yesterdays guardian!)

anyone else picking up their seven deadly sins in football features??? great reading.

I think theres more chance of a political revolution than Owen and Jonas scoring in the same game. Much more likely to be Viduka or Martins, who are both hitting top form.

I wonder if starting with Steven Taylor at RB and Duff at LB is a possibility? I would mean having Colo and Edgar in the middle, but that is supposed to be Edgar’s natural position.

Midfield has been our problem and will remain so. Butt and Nolan are solid, but Guthrie has more creativity. Jonas gets past defenders but always loses the ball. Ryan Taylor can throw the ball into the 6-yard box from the halfway line, but canna kick it for buttons.

And in attack – do you go for Geordie spirit in Carroll or stick with Duke and Martins? If Owen’s fit, do you start him knacker the defence with his running, then sub him (as per Smogs)?

I’m so glad I’m not Big Al right now.

I dont think O’Neill (although he has publically stated he will go for an all out win) would like to see the toon get relegated. After all he was linked with the toon job himself on several occasions and Shearer is a friend from MOTD.

On the other hand if Fergie plays ‘2nd string’ players like Marcheda, I dont think we have anything to worry about and whatever Fergie thinks about Brown, Amos and Marcheda ect will be looking to stamp down their authority on the premier leauge.

    ____________Harper__________
    Coloccini__S.Taylor_Edgar____Duff
    ____________Butt____________
    _____Guthrie_______Nolan_____
    _______Martins_Viduka_Carrol___
Taylor and Edgar to deal with the arial prowess they have and Big Andy(heads I win) to get back and defend corners. Owen can go and suck eggs somewhere.

For any top-end manager, competitive spirit will override anything else. Fergie may field his youth team – but he’ll still fully expect 3 points from them.

Likewise Villa – can’t see them giving an inch, although the players will lack the extra motivation they would normally have, and hopefully half their heads will already be at their villas in the Algarve.

I see the appeal with regards to Bassong has been turned down.
It MUST NOT be the end of the world.
Although Sebastien Bassong has been without doubt the best player of the season, we must press on with heart, aggression and will, to beat Aston Villa.
A win is certainly possible on Sunday.
It is up to us, and the team to survive this nightmare.
Should we be beaten come Sunday, I will finally hold my hands up and resign the team and myself to several years of championship football.

DJG – I like that line-up, although I’d switch Colo and Tayls around. Tayls has done well in that position.

I’d not really thought about Duke, Martins and Carroll up there – but it does appeal. Question is: would Villa just go around that midfield too easily?

A quick note on Milner: while I like the lad, his stats this season are really no better than when he was with us. Steven Taylor has scored as many as him! Good spirit and fun to watch, but little on the end of it.

433 is good when on the attack – but villa’s main strength is their wingers – thats y I would shy away from the 433, in such a cruisal game. Cant afford 2 be weak at the back.

    ……………..Harper……………..

    Edgar…Collo…S.Taylor…Enrique

    Jonas….Nolan….Butt….Duff

    ……..Viduka…..Martins…….

Krul, Cacapa, Gutherie, Loven, LuaLua, owen, Carroll.

This gives the full-backs good cover on the defensive, but also provides creativity on the attack down the wings. win win.

Whumpie, would you trust Collo in the middle, with such an important match? I’m wondering if AL will try 3-4-3, or 3-5-2 again, meaning he can play all 3 CB’s in their natural position, and frees Duff up to play a wing?

DJG, I agree with you 100% re: Man U’s 2nd string side! They likes of Marcheda, Nani, Park, Wellbeck, possibly Scholes/Giggs & hopefully Ronaldo -who will want to claim the golden boot will easily outclass Hull.

I thought we bought Ben Tozer as a LB?? He’s had some good reports from the reserves since he came back from injury.

I can’t have anything bad to say about Duff, the wee lad has been played totally out of position in a relegation battle, each match a crucial one and he’s done so without complaining or whining and he’s done well.
I don’t really have a bad word to say about him for it. Fair play.

Canny see AS droppin Butt that is the problem,He has the experience but he does so many unexperienced type passes in the game.

Think we gotta stop sayin we can win at Villa…..they are so much stronger than us and that`s why there is so much room between us on the table-Doesn`t lie.
We can hope for a draw but we need to score first.
Duff won`t let milner past him so he is a good bet there.
AS needs to work with Jonas and get him to send the ball in the box as wtih R.Taylor who also needs to work on his deliveries.

To the Fans going to the match of the day:

Please think that we can win the match. Even if we are 2 down we still have to support the team. They will need the support to fight back until the final min.

Anyway it might be the last time to see them in the EPL already. Why not just support them all the way.

We have to be like Italy fans – Juventus ALL the way. Tat’s also one of the reson why even until now, the likes of Gianluigi Buffon, Cristiano Zanetti, Pavel Nedved, Mauro Camoranesi, David Trezeguet and of course, Alessandro Del Piero are still in there.

Some might say because of the money or etc. then they stay. But i believe this fans plays a big part in their game. The team was bond like gel, just like the old Man Utd, and Toons.

I remenber one time Man Utd fan stared to booooo..their players when things aren’t going their ways. But Fergie come out and put things straight to the Fans.

I support Newcastle to win. Dnt care how you do it, just WIN IT!!!

    Newcastle All the way!
    Howay the lads!
