Michael Owen Fit – On The Bench – Lovenkrands, Edgar Start

May 24th, 2009 by Ed Harrison · 485 Comments

aston-villa nufc-crest4

Newcastle manager Alan Shearer is forced to change his back four with Habib Beye (hamstring) and Sebastien Bassong (suspended) not being available, and as expected David Edgar and Fabricio Coloccini come in for this crucial game.

And Damien Duff maintains his place at left back, with Jose Enrique on the bench, and that’s a good move by Alan, given Damien is more than solid there, and Jose hasn’t played for 3 weeks.

As we had hoped, Danish striker Peter Lovenkrands replaces Jonas Gutierrez in midfield, and Peter can score goals of course, which we need today.

And the good news is that captain Michael Owen (groin) has passed a late fitness test and takes his place on the bench.

We’re not sure he’s 100%  fit for today, but no doubt Alan will use Michael in the second half if we need goals.

Michael – on a personal note – this is a great chance for you to save Newcastle if you get on today – please play out of your skin for the team.

The bench is strong, but Nile Ranger didn’t make it – these lads Tim Krul, Ryan Taylor, Shola Ameobi, Michael Owen, Alan Smith, Jose Enrique, Jonas Gutierrez are on the bench and any one of them could turn out to be the hero for the Magpies today – as long as someone does. :D

Our hopes are sky high, but our reality, in truth, is quite low as far as a win goes – but we’ll take the miracle today.

Howay The Lads!!

Ed, the official website messed it up as usual. Your copy and pasted team has Gutierrez on the bench and playing. Lovenkrands plays :)

I must seriously doubt Shearer´s manager abilities when he puts Ameobi on the bench instead of Ranger.

But I still think we´ll win this game but not happy with seeing Colo there but there is little other choice. Geremi would hardly be better when he aint match fit. But i´d be furious if Colo is in the centre of defense, then we´re just relegated. very simple. Clearly Enrique will come on to push Duff forward if we need in the end.
I´d like to have seen Ranger on the bench but you can´t get everything you want

Owen actually might score the winning goal, I have an odd feeling that he´ll do it but it won´t change much of my opinion of him but I´d still be thrilled!!!!! Owen can score the odd goals especially coming on in the end, not tired and when we are pushing. He did it for Real madrid and scored but we´ll see

    GO TOON!

  • 28 Soren // May 24, 2009 at 3:47 PM

Dont think we need to worry about the Hull game, as Man Utd is a strong team, and even their line-up for today will do enough to beat Hull.
I am more concerned with our defence having to cope with the pace of Young and Agbonlahor, and the power of Carew. Especially a slow and weak player like Colo, and Edgar seems a bit light weight too. We’ll definitely need good support from midfield.
Also a bit sad not to see Ranger at least included in the squad for today. But think that Loven, Martins and Viduka will also prove quiet a handful for the Villa defence, as they are not impressive.

    Howay the lads!

  • 51 Johann // May 24, 2009 at 3:58 PM

    Let´s put it this way.

    Ranger or Ameobi?

That´s the first question. I know my answer.

And the second thing young strikers most often thrive on pressure. And very rarely young strikers cost us goal in todays game! But Ameobi carelessness does. But I agree some young players can´t stand the pressure and need more time to adapt but I have a sneaky feeling Ranger doesn´t.

United are doing well. Delighted for wee Gibson who scored, is very promising Irish lad.

I’ve a terrible feeling that we’re going to have Taylor sent off.

The commentators solution to all of that, when we need someone to work hard, show leadership and passion and score us a goal..bring on Owen. Ya..right.

    Our captain is headless.
Our backs are running into eachother.
    Our keeper isn’t helping.

    Johann
    Done better with the goal?
The goal wasn’t Harps fault but he hasn’t been vocal at all.
    Could Given had done better.
He’s been at City for a few months and City fans were giving him a shout in for player of the year.
Harps, I love the lad I do, but Given is a class apart, and it’s clear, made more clear every game he plays.
Krul? Are you serious, for some, God only knows reason, gets all this praise, ffs, he’s played one good match for this club. Everyone’s a superstar these days apparently. Nothing earned at all.

Selling Given could well have cost us the season. He’s been brilliant for City and the fans adore him. Feels wrong to hear a different corwd chaning “There’s Only One Shay Given.”

    Just wrong.

  • 223 reillers // May 24, 2009 at 5:15 PM

No he’s not, that was the problem in the first place, Hart was anything but commanding.
I’ve seen Given with the City players and he roars his head off at them.

City have improved a lot since he’s arrived, a good few clean sheets at home, his defence has let him down a lot though. But he’s been very good and one of the main reasons why the fans have fallen in love with him so quickly and one of the main reasons why people think he should be captain after half a season there.

What has Shearer done to stay as manager? We need somebody else. A great Geordie goalscorer does not make a great manager. TWO million quid for 8 games. Good money if you can get it. No wonder he wants the job permanently

  • 305 reillers // May 24, 2009 at 5:51 PM

    Jimiley
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. Shearer is completely inexperienced. He was brought here in the hope of a fairytale, Ashley brought him in for two reasons, 1-it’d take the pressure off him because people were demanding him
2-Ashley wins either way, they stay up, it was a stroke of genious, or we go down with Shearer, we’ll never really turn on him.

He doesn’t know what he’s doing, he doesn’t have his coaching badges.
He’s no experience and he was what, expected to save us, why? Because he scored goals for us as a player.
I mean be realistic, this is football not a fairytale.

Newcastle will still have a fair amount of ‘media pull’, even in the Championship and hopefully that’ll attract a decent owner. Someone who’ll take the club at a reasonable price, fund it properly and sensibly and put in place a manager with a 5 year plan to rebuild.

The only spanner in the works will be if Ashley refuses to sell the club.

  • 375 Anon 878 // May 24, 2009 at 6:10 PM

I’m with Geordie Deb on this one. I’m gutted, but relieved. It’s over now. Time to get on with it and rebuild. We’ve certainly got the youngsters and now we can get rid of the crap.

The key is keeping Shearer on and keeping the finances stable.

There were a lot of bad decisions made by the club, especially by Ashley. Though I think too much credit has been given to him in terms of decisions. Ashley made the mistake of surrounding himself with yes men who had no clue what they were doing.

And let’s be honest. Even if we stayed up, we’d be back in this position. The overpaid junk would stay, nothing would change and we’d barely bring anyone in. At least this gives us a chance to start anew, with some young talent.

We’ll be alright. Our spirit will keep us going at this point.

I’ve got this tearing feeling in my heart that is not pain, but a feeling of sweet redemption that will slowly gather over the next year.

Everybody better watch out, because when we come back up, we’ll be a force to be reckoned with.

  • 376 Fans Should Own The Club // May 24, 2009 at 6:11 PM

Now that we’re relegated, it’s a real chance at fan ownership because the price will drop.

  • 377 reillers // May 24, 2009 at 6:11 PM

Cheers anyway lad. A legend true and true.

and its going to take many years to do up again which is annoying :( , but lets hope Ashley goes and someone who LIKES or even understands how a club runs comes in that all i wish for which isnt to little i hope.

shut up michael12 if shearer didnt take over who else would want to be at this dreadful club at this period? plus it is not his players to begin with and 8 games its just too much, he have the guts to at least try and manage some decent attempt but our players let us down, 3 different managers didnt manage to do anything, so it is the owner and our players!

  • 404 Macas // May 24, 2009 at 6:19 PM

Michael12 – It wasn’t a mistake getting in Keegan, it was a mistake in not backing him and going behind his back. Under Keegan we would have stayed up. Ashley is clueless. The football under Keegan is the best we have seen for years, and the gormless cretins in charge couldn’t back him.

  • 405 gorskino10 // May 24, 2009 at 6:19 PM

  • 406 magpie6699 // May 24, 2009 at 6:20 PM

Very sad – but at least we know now. I told my mates weeks ago (after the Bolton game) that we were going down – I can hardly believe it took so long and we were only 1 point away from safety in the end – just goes to show how bad the bottom half of the Premiership is – and we are 3rd worst!
I also can’t believe all those who say that Shearer is crap and we should get someone better. How many times are we going to change the manager after only a few games? And who are we going to get in the Championship to manage us? Oh of course, Martin O’Neill, Arsene Wenger, Jose, Guus are all going to be falling over themselves, aren’t they? Maybe you want Gareth Southgate – or Joe Kinnear back? You might get a “rising” star from a lower division – but that doesn’t always work out – Paul Ince anyone?
Let’s be sensble. Shearer IS inexperienced and has lots to learn – but he has the passion, respect and stature to help us retain some of those we might want to and attract others to come.
    I hope he stays.
Now I am going to join the long queue of people waiting to throw themselves off the Tyne Bridge ………

  • 407 Anon 878 // May 24, 2009 at 6:20 PM

The most important thing at this point is that we stay united together. We need to get behind the youngsters.

Part of this stability we all crave is us not throwing a fit. Let’s blow off the steam today and start new tomorrow.

This is our chance at rebirth.

He won’t do that, but that is literally his only hope for redemption

No doubt Shearer and KK would not be possible without Ashley. So ultimately he is to blame.

Ashley believes in fairytales, That former greats are simply going to walk in and do it all again. KK did it again alright, walked, Shearer had a bark far exceeding his bite. We did not need press as this puts too much pressure on players. Kinnear was not a great manager I admit that but he kept the spot light off us.

I have Friends all of whom support other teams saying to me when Shearer walked in that they just hope Newcastle Go down “because it was Alan Shearer managing.” No other reason just because it is Shearer. I read an article sayingThe press secretly wanted us to lose because it would make a bigger story than BiddlesBro’, Hull, Sunderland or many other teams going down especially with Shearer managing. A failure is even bigger if you have had so much success.

  • 423 Anon 878 // May 24, 2009 at 6:24 PM

Everyone needs to can it with the “fck Ashley” crap. It’s not going to get us anywhere but further down. He’ll sell up this summer. He’s taken too much of a loss now and it’s no one’s but his regime’s fault.

Boycotting the club is pointless as well. No budding youngster wants to come to a club in turmoil or a club with shite fans.

I’ll stand by with anyone who dislikes the regime, but certainly our heart is with the club, in the stadium.

  • 424 ObaFan2 // May 24, 2009 at 6:24 PM

We never replaced Emre… no flair to create anything.

    We never strengthened left back.

We became the laughing stock of the country, sacking managers, their replacements, our so called executives, directors etc.

Selling our younger experienced players and banking the money…

the list goes on and it’s all down to one man…the owner, infact I will never utter his name again but thankful of the millions he’s lost but not the way he lost it!

  • 425 roscoe // May 24, 2009 at 6:25 PM

    Well what can I say…

It was just meant to be, that goal sending us down just sums it all up. We have to try take some positives from this… If we had stayed up we would have seen one or two out and two or three mediocre players in. Another season flirting with relegation! Now we get to see Lua Lua, Vukic, Ranger etc. If we can keep hold of Bassong Beye Taylor and Enrique Our back four is REALLY solid!

Howay for a new callenge next season and some exciting new players hungry to prove themselves and not some over paid has beens taking their last paycheck!

I will support the TOON till I die!

    HOWAY THE LADS!!!

  • 426 Hugh de Payen // May 24, 2009 at 6:27 PM

My worry is that, if Ashley plans on selling, he’ll strip the club first.

It’s probably still better than him staying but it’ll need an owner with money to rebuild it.

  • 427 Soren // May 24, 2009 at 6:27 PM

Obafan2 – When watching the game I was thinking the exact same thing, and it is something that has been on my mind for a long time. We have never replaced Emre. He was a creative spark in midfield and the nr.1 set piece taker. Miss him..
About leftback, I pray we can keep Enrique.

  • 428 jimiley // May 24, 2009 at 6:28 PM

Oba is vastly overrated. Owen is finished. Viduka is too old and slow. Smith will score next millenium. Butt is too slow and old. Geremi is… Geremi. Too slow to catch a cold. Nolan is… something. Jonas’ spiderman mask is threadbare. The list goes on. We are crap and i am relieved we are going down. My relief is tempered by the fact that I am not convinced we can get rid of these overpaid loafers. They will want to stay on 70k a week to promote us!!! Oh really? and then get us into the top 4 no doubt!!! Clear off the lot of you!!!

    come on newcastle!

  • 434 Rodzilla // May 24, 2009 at 6:30 PM

for all the outrageously idiotic decisions Ashley has made, I think he’s learnt by his mistakes. I’m not sticking up for him coz he’s been a Premier Grade nob – no question. At the end of the day he’s made HUGE mistake/gambles that have backfired on him. I don’t reckon there’s much sense in calling for his head now. It didn’t work first time ’round.

At the end of the day he’ll do what he believes right, and (call me a cnt, I can take it) I think there’s no point him selling up now. He’s got it right with Shearer. My little brother failed his exams first time ’round, and I didn’t chin him – got it right on the 2nd shot. Experience speaks volumes.

MA & AS, let’s have some consistency now…………

There goes Bassong who can now Join Arsenal with a clear conscious. There Goes Martins Who is no doubt going to have to go to reduce our wage bill. There Goes Beye.

All those talking about a positive side to relegation are cannot possibly be serious. This is a disaster financially, we have a reputation of being aggressive fans. There is no swift recovery nor is there at all a guarantee of returning ever. The comparisons with Leeds are frightening and because they once played in the Champs league they thought they would bonce back instantly but that has not happened. We may not see the Premier league for many years to come. Attracting players of Championship calibur will be possible but that is it.

‘Yes we can stay up. If we look at our goal difference it’s reasonably good comparing it with Hull’s, and if we talking probabilities, yes Hull will lose to Man Utd, Sunderland will lose to Chelsea, but let’s not forget we must do our bit too…… and if we also talk probabilities, our loss against Aston Villa is a probability although they are in ..bad form(?!). That’s the reason I’ve been so insistent, I believe we can beat them with Nacho… you will have to endure my annoyance for one more week, it’s not too much to ask at all.. so we basically want everything to go ‘according to plan’.. But we forget how unlikely a win is on Sunday.’

  • 444 Big Dave // May 24, 2009 at 6:36 PM

He’s had to cut the wage bill this season, but he’s building things long term and Boro will be stronger for it. I wouldn’t be surprised to see them up there next year.
