We have just put up a poll for the Newcastle United Blog player of the season for 2008-2009.

We have 10 players on the short list to choose from, and yes some of them probably shouldn’t even be on there. Buit some lads have played well for us, especially over these last several crucial games.
Players must have played for the full season, so that eliminates Nolan, Lovenkrands and Ryan Taylor, whom we bought in the summer. Those who have been out injured for long spells, like Mark Viduka are also not included.
We also have not listed either goalkeeper Harper or Given, because they just played half a season – well in any case if we put Shay down, he may win and he’s not even at the club now – that didn’t seem appropriate somehow.
Please go to our home page and register your vote in the poll corner, which is in the right hand column.

Could the Player Of The Season vote really go to any player other than Bassong? Michael Owen anyone? Sorry bad joke…
6 Drago // May 25, 2009 at 4:56 PM

@toonfactor – you having a laugh mate – strachan sucks, in a league of two he came second!
10 Robby Bobson // May 25, 2009 at 5:12 PM
Bassong no doubt about it.
We should now target young championship players on the verge of becoming prem quality such as Gunnarson at Cov, St Ledger, Killgallon, Ledley and Kyle Walker.
ON match of the day yesterday it said that we have 15 players on 50k or more which is ridiculous. Clear them all out and rebuild with a young hungry team. The players who deserve to stay are Guthrie, Bassong, S.Taylor, R.Taylor, (may be better in championship), Carrol, Enrique, Beye, Lovenkrands and Duff because he gives eveything.
11 Alanmc09 // May 25, 2009 at 5:25 PM
Stevep-what about the last 3 years?
12 Geordiedoonsooth // May 25, 2009 at 5:31 PM
I voted for Steven Taylor because unlike Bassong he has said he will stay with the club unlike Bassong.
13 Lew Davies // May 25, 2009 at 5:32 PM
Can someone please explain to me HOW we get rid of 15 players who get paid £50K+ a week.?????
You cant just say “pack your bags old son.”
The trouble is these over payed tossers have great contracts, which means NUFC will have to keep paying them regardless.
The only way is to either sell them ( and who is going to pay them similar wages?) or else put them up for free!!! Either way if the players dont want to go, then we are well and truely stuck with them.
This could mean we start the next season with the same garbage as this one.
Owen will walk on a free having fleeced this club good and proper. OK he will have to take lower wages but will make up for it with a nice big juicy signing on fee.
But I dont care, I will just be so glad to see the back of him.
Dark days ahead,

Whats that got to do with who has been better this season? that was the question.

Our team hopefully for next season:
Krul
Beye—Taylor—Wheater—Enrique
Ledley—Nolan—Butt—Duff
Costa—Janko

strachan has apparently spoken to sunderland, i wouldnt want him at Newcastle anyway, the majority of Celtic fans i know say he’s clueless tactically and isnt good enough for them-a team that fights in a league where only two teams are competitive.

beyethegreat – They picked us simply because it’s us. Further examples of bigotry, I’m not surprised.
20 reillers // May 25, 2009 at 6:10 PM
I don’t think anyone has preformned near the level that Given has for us till he left.
We need a lot of players to bring us back up. We’re not going to attract that many, we wont have a lot of money to spend and like, you’ve name flying around up there like Stephen Hunt, would be a good addition but if he leaves Reading he’ll probably want to go to a team that’s in the Prem all ready. It’s the sad truth of it.

3 votes for NICKY BUTT as player of the year.
What a laugh…………
Worst player of thye year i reckon
22 Macas // May 25, 2009 at 6:53 PM
Nicky Butt has given 100% every game, and while some performances dipped he certainly wasn’t the worst player this season. In fact he was man of the match in certain games.

We need to sort out long term future first. Whether Shearer will manage us for the next 3-5 years. What the plan is for the current team, shipping out players and bringing some in.
It’s a long road in front of us lads… but if the board and the club do it right we are on the way up..
35 nufcc // May 25, 2009 at 7:39 PM
Jose Enrique. Clearly the most consistent and efficient player at the club this season. Hope he stays next season, will be great for our team and hopefully will be able to bounce back.
36 toonluvva // May 25, 2009 at 7:40 PM
Ok, we are down. I hope that the cost of relegation has finally woken up Mike Ashley to what it takes to run a football club. If Shearer is to take the job, he should make sure that as he comes in LLambias goes out!
As for the overpaid players we have on the books, I agree that it might not be so easy to get rid of some of the dead-weights and this worries me.
Player of the Year? my vote is for Bassong. Just hope we can keep him for next year.
37 nufcc // May 25, 2009 at 7:44 PM
Read Duff’s interview somewhere. he said he was committed to newcastle and would stay next season. Also said last 8 weeks since shearer came the club has been run like a proper football club. Looks like shearer did a fine job. Hope he stays and brings us back up in the near future.
38 DJM TOON // May 25, 2009 at 7:49 PM
that guardian article mentions getting rob lee in to help and the good ol john carver… i think they’re very astute additions to alans team, especially since we all are pensive regarding AS tactical nonce
39 sahota // May 25, 2009 at 8:01 PM
First time commenting after yesterday’s defeat. I was feeling gutted since then.Still feeling down. Looks like you guys have picked yourself up and planning ahead which is good to know. Not sure why still I am not able to convince myself about what happened. Nothing less than winning championship next year will be satisfactory. We should not now waste even a day. Start planning things from today. I hope Mike Ashley give all what Shearer wants and we move on.
40 DJM TOON // May 25, 2009 at 8:01 PM
when the bull came on on sunday, he was on it from the off, would do well to keep him next season.
i would also keep duff… yes, he’s not found his old form but he is still a fighter and if he’s going to come out and say he wants to stay, then he’s also pretty much said he’ll take a pay cut, with him and taylor leading the way, hopefulyl that’ll be the catalyst for other players to follow suit. i’d definitly want to keep viduka on a pay to play deal. harper i would keep and i would imagine he’d stay too, he loves the toon. beye also loves the toon and is a credit to the team, i hope he’ll also take a cut and play on next term. jonas and collocini will leave, thats a given, both argie internationals, they wont stay. bassong, well, i’d love to see him stay but cant see it, shame… please prove me wrong seb!
carroll will stay, no doubt shola will stay. guthrie would be good to stay and i’d also liek to see nolan stay, he would have the right attitude and be an inspiration to our young team.
pick upa few loans next season from the prem… there’ some starlets about, along with some of our own young blood and i think we’ll be in good shape.

42 Spirit of 93 // May 25, 2009 at 8:08 PM
Its my first post. Just a shame this blog is coming to an end and its taken a monumental f*@k up for me to post.
Ive been so down over the last 24hrs but am starting to sort my heed out for the coming season.
Shearer needs to stay. he has obviously put some much needed professionalism into the club which has been crying out for it for many a season. He’ll surround himself with the right people im sure to help him get promotion.
Lambias needs to go or at least go on a PR course. His smug grin still winds me up. Communication needs to improve massively. We need to know the plan.
This is a massive chance to clear the decks and start a fresh. Owen, Viduka, Martins, Smith, Geremi, Collocini, Barton, Butt amongst others to go the distance. Some aren’t good enough for thye CCC. Others wont want to play there.
Give Shearer the chance to buy his players. Im sure those loyall to him will stay (Duff, Taylor and hopefully Beye and Bassong among others). Give the likes of Ranger and lua lua a chance. They could be the next Cole / Ginola.
But far more important than any of that, are the fans. The sooner we come to terms with this situation the better equiped we are for the season ahead. Other teams will relish playing at SJP but the fans can make it a truly imtimidating atmosphere. We need to make SJP a fortress again.
We can do these man. They’re two bob!!!
C’mon the Toon!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
43 Spirit of 93 // May 25, 2009 at 8:11 PM
BTW, player of the year, TAYLOR. Not the greatest defender in the world but for his goals, determination and love of the club, he gets my vote. Captain next season without a doubt.
44 Johann // May 25, 2009 at 8:21 PM
Voted for Enrique. Bassong was making too costly mistakes in the end when it really mattered. Not impressed with Beye first when he came in. He put the defense wide open but grew as the games came. not a CB though.
Harper was my man of the season last season but I wasn´t impressed with him now. He did look little disinterested or like he didn´t believe in it. He didn´t put enough confidence in the defense. But tell me a better one if you think Given would have made any difference at all. We needed a commanding keeper for our defense. Harper didn´t produce that this time around. Very disappointing.
45 Penalty-Spot // May 25, 2009 at 9:00 PM

voted for JOSE ENRIQUE. i think he has done a good job. he improve it a lot since he came from spain. he has a golden left, and i think that he can be an importat player next year. but… honestly, i think he will be back to spain on summer. and also i want DUFF for the next year. he gives everything in all matches.
