10 Overpaid Players To Leave Newcastle In The Summer

We’ve seen it in the comments with our readers, and it’s also true that this will be the biggest change in Newcastle’s squad for many many years – good.

Michael Owen – the worst deal for a club in Premier League history

That’s because we are forced to unload some of our high wage earners, but there is also a chance that by reducing the wage bill Mike Ashley has to pay from around £74M to say £40M, the squad is also improved.

Doesn’t that go against the conservation of energy?

But indeed, that’s the opportunity Shearer (if he is manager), Llambias and Mike Ashley have in the summer. While we wouldn’t have had to be so drastic if had survived last Sunday, the way a lot of our readers are looking at it – is since we have to do it now – let’s do it thoroughly.

Gone are the days with a squad of Owen, Viduka, Coloccini, Cacapa (remember him), Gonxzalez (who is he?), Smith and Barton – players who are paid massive amounts of money and are either always injured or when they do play – they are mediocre, at best.

The only player we would excuse a little is Mark Viduka – who was great in our last several games- but that’s all he played all season. That disallowed goal against Fulham would have saved us. 🙁

So here are the players we’d like to see removed – with some supporting reasons – and then of course it would be great to get your views on this.

Maybe Alan will be reading this for some idea, once he signs his contract today or tomorrow (hopefully). 😀

Here we go:

  • Michael Owen – if I was Michael Owen I would be embarrassed at taking £22M in wages over the last 4 years. Yes he’s been injured but ever goal has cost the club £1.3M – and he was nowhere to be seen in the last several vital games- injured again. It was like going into battle and wondering what happened to your top general – who disappeared. Good generals don’t disappaer in the heat of battle. Sorry Michael – and it isn’t personal because we know he’s sent notes back to some of our readers – via the www.contacttheplayers.com web-site. This is purely a professional criticism, and when you earn the doe Michael does, you have to expect criticism. I get enough of it on here for my $1/day. 😀
  • Nacho Gonzalez – this is not in order but Nacho’s loan spell this season epitomized the ineptitude of the club. He’s appeared in two fleeting appearances in early September and has never been seen since. We suppose we still paid his wages and a loan fee maybe of £400K – that’s a stupid use of the club’s money. Dennis Wise did this deal and shows how inept he was – and it’s good news he’s left.
Talking about Dennis – he did this seal the deal on the last day of the transfer market last summer, which takes us to our next player.
  • Xisco – Another Dennis Wise wonder signing – £5.7M for this 22 year-old who is now behind Owen, Martins, Viduka, Carroll, Ameobi, Lovenkrands and Ranger in the striker pecking order – do I have to say any more? He is 8th striker and we paid almost £6M for him – excuse me while I go and vomit in the toilet. Nobody can make a good case for him to stay at Newcastle – well maybe his mother could.
  • Claudio Cacapa – signed by Sam on a free transfer after captaining Lyon to success in the French League – looked to us to be on a par with Beye when signed. But, unlike the great Habib, he just was never good enough , and while we thought (hoped is more accurate) his horror show against Portsmouth early in the 2007-2008 season was a bad day – it wasn’t. Newcastle will not renew his contract in the summer.
  • Mark Viduka – still a great player when fit but in his 2 seasons at he club he appeared 48 times (34 starts) and scored 7 goals. For £65K a week that’s not a good enough production. Pim Verbeek, the Aussie coach will announce his world Cup squad for games in World Cup qualifiers against Qatar, Bahrain and Japan next month, and if Mark isn’t in – that would be a good indication he will retire, or go back to play in the A league. But credit to Mark for giving everything he had for the club, but only when Shearer arrived – he’s a good man.
  • Joey Barton – the era of players who don’t give a hoot about the club is over, and also the ra of thugs on Tyneside is over and will not be allowed under Shearer – we’ll keep it short and sweet – and the lad’s on £65K/week – we paid him that to disgrace our club? And he’s done it more than once – but you don’t tangle with Shearer in the dressing room – and win.
  • Fabricio Coloccini – £10M for a player who tunred out to be half as good as player we paid only £500K for – Seb Bassong. Really not good enough for the Premier league. And Mark Douglas of the Journal yesterd hit the nail on the head when he said we could have bought Gary Cahill from Bolton for about 3M, and the former Aston Villa youngster is a much better player and only 22 – good words from Mark – and for £10M let’s get real – he’s not good enough and another player on over £60K a week But news today that Bolotn boss Gary Megson would want £20M for the player – now that Arsenal may be interested. Is Gary being cheeky or is Gary being cheeky?
  • Geremi – not a player for Alan Shearer and if Alan has talked to Bobby Robson, no doubt Bobby will have told him the story two years ago, that the word on Geremi was thta he had lost his legs, and couldn’t hack it anymore. But we are Newcastle, and we still went in and got him as a free agent. At the time it seemed a good deal, but another player not worth the £60K/week we pay him.
  • Alan Smith – injured too much and far too expensive at £60K/week, Never scored a goal yet for Newcastle but was signed as striker , but has been used in midfield by Shearer. He may be kept by the boss because of his fighting spirit but not good enough for £60K/week. He could stay if takes a 50% cut in wages – fighting spitit alone is not worth the money.
  • Jonas Gutierrez – we’re a little unsure of Jonas but he probably wants to leave in the summer, and if that’s the case don’t stand in his way. He reminds us too much of Temuri Ketsbaia – and seems to run around like a headless chicken. And he certainly cannot score goals for toffee, and has missed some sitters, especially against Hull away – and that could have saved us. We’ve shelled out £5M for him as well – but not a stayer – there are better players out there.

Those are the main ones to unload for the reasons stated.

A rough estimate of those 10 players wages is about £570K/week, which is about £30M/year, so if Mike unloads this lot, the club will be in so much better shape with the wages, and we’ll not even see headlines of Newcastle players in jail.

Notice Oba Martins is not there, and he’s one player we’d like to see kept – or loaned out for a season. And we should pay Bassong what we were paying Coloccini and the lad may even stay – although we really doubt it, but if he does – that would be fantastic!.

Not it’s your turn – comments always welcome.

Gotta agree with you on this, but I think I would add Butt and Ameobi to this list.
Don’t think Ameobi will ever be good enough for us, not even in the Championship, and Butt is rubbish!

Oh and I’ve lost all respect for Owen.
The only way I’ll ever gain it back is if he agrees to stay on and help get us out of this mess that he helped get us into….oh and when I say stay on, I mean taking a massive pay cut, I think he should be earning the same wages as Andy Carrol.
Maybe Shearer has some magic left in the bag, he convinced him to come to this club once, maybe he can convince him to take a pay cut and stay. Then again, maybe pigs will grow wings and fly!!!
Has anyone thought that if Viduka was thinking of retiring, maybe he’d stay on one more year on a lower salary or a pay-as-you-play deal?

I totally agree with you Ed. I’m also believing that Seb will leave us. Sadly. I’m actually looking forward to seing the back side of those “players”.
I think we should loan as many young and promesing players as we can, with an option to a permanent stay. That would give us the oppurtunity to keep the good players and loose the bad ones, once we are promoted.

Hope you keep the blog open Ed. I use it over 10 times a day. Best NUFC site on the net.

Viduka (keep if we can on pay as play deal)

    Dan Sturridge
    Sotiris Leontiou
    Kris Boyd
    Dean Whitehead

Agree Ed but add to your list Duff, Ryan Taylor, Nolan, Martins, Ameobi, Harper and Butt. Not one of them earned their wages and don’t deserve to stay. We need fresh faces and players with hunger, heart, pace and some skill wouldn’t go amiss. I have been completely anti Ashley but i am prepared to give him a chance to get things right and he only has One chance left so he better take it because god help him and the club if he doesn’t.

Ed I agree almost completly with your article apart from I would also get rid of Martins. He is a comp-lete headless chicken he may be fast but he is no Malcolm MacDonald he needs 15 chances to score 1. If he had beena top class forward he would have scored at least one of the many chances he had in the last 3 games & we would have stayed up. Also he is not a team player & we may be able to get a decent transfer fee with which we may be able to buy 2-3 Championship forwards with. I remember back when Joe Harvey sold Alan Suddick (God rest his soul) & bought 3 players that kept us up.

If Owen took a massive reduction in wages I would keep him and I think he would probably stay…I don’t see many clubs clambering for his signature at the moment and would probably kill it in the fizzy’s.

Maybe Ship out Ameobi and Smith and use that to pay Martins wages too.

But Even if Owen and Martins went I wouldn’t lose too much sleep…time to get the young lads we have heard so much about a chance too.

I disagree with several of your points Ed.

Owen – Bad luck with injuries has cost him his reputation. It’s also cost us a lot of money but it’s not his fault. He’s trained hard, worked hard when he’s played and still has a near 1 in 2 record for us which is all you can ask from a striker who hasn’t even played as a striker for half the time he’s been here. I’m not saying he should stay, I’m just saying he’s taking so much of the blame for something not entirely in his control.

Nacho – Got injured. Not his fault. Not the clubs fault. He looked good and creative when he played and I’m quite sad we didn’t get to see more of him.

Jonas – Why on earth would you get rid of a pacey skillful winger when we go into the championship? It’s players like him that could help us bounce back. I don’t believe we’ve seen the best from him yet as again he’s struggled with a few niggles this year.

I’d like to see the following leave:

    Ameobi – Just dire.
Smith – Love the attitude, just don’t know what role he fulfils.
Viduka – A bit old and unfit to help us anymore.
Geremi – I think he can do a job as CM but is a bit too slow now.
    Colo – Awful. Absolutely awful.
Barton – Over paid and somewhat of a liability.
Cacapa – The worst idea ever. Brazilian defenders…
Edgar – Just not quite good enough.
    R. Taylor – Unless he can do something magical in pre-season and decides he wants to play for us.

Players I desperately want to keep:

Butt – In the championship he will do well.

Add on to this squad the youngsters. Tozer, Kadar, Ranger, Lua Lua etc and we’ve got a reasonable championship squad. If we could sign Beckford too I’d be so unbelievably happy.

I can’t understand how you can criticise a player for being injured.
OK, maybe you can say we didn’t get our money’s worth because they were injured, but how is that the players fault when fitness training, treatment of injury, recovery, physio etc are all the responsibility of the backroom medical staff?

We have seen regularly that when Owen is fit and gets service, he puts it in the net.

Ed, have you got yourself a ghost writer?
So much has changed recently and at times I’m not even sure you’re writing in English.

I am pretty sure that for financial reasons all the earners over 50000 a week will have to go.
Colo and Guti will be worried about their World Cup prospects playing in the Championship and are sure to leave.
10 in and 10 out is quite feasible.
Martins may have to be sold as he would presumably command the highest transfer fee.

owen wont stay here, theres a world cup coming in 2010 and he’ll probably want to go to another club everton/aston villa are my guess and bang afew goals in,prove his fittness and try and convince capello that he’s worth taking to south africa.I know there a alot of fans that don’t rate owen but i still think he was our best striker. with a more creative midfield and fewer injuries he would have got us goal.

When Keith Harris, the engaging chairman of the stockbroker Seymour Pierce, turned 50 on 11 April this year, his friend Richard Desmond, owner of Express Newspapers, give him silver replicas of the three trophies Mr Harris’s beloved Manchester United won in 1999 – the European Champion’s League, the Premiership and the FA Cup.

Here we go again! Just as it looked like there was some kind of stability coming to the club, Ashley looks to be selling up. Perhaps, just perhaps, this was already in the pipeline and that’s why the talks with Shearer were stalling/taking so long? I said when Shearer was appointed that Ashley may have already agreed to sell the club at the end of the season and the new owner(s) wanted Shearer there as manager.
Well, it looks like Fat Fred will step up with his consortium (read that as dodgy businessmen) and really stuff us up.
If Ashley does sell to FFS then it will be the biggest mistake he has made since coming here and THAT WILL BE THE FINAL NAIL IN OUR COFFIN.
