It’s strange that the goings on at Newcastle over the last two years coincide with the history of the Newcastle United Blog.
Here is the list of things (is that the right word>) that have happened since this blog was created – we think you’ll be surprised:
- April 23rd 2007 – The Newcastle United Blog comes online
- May 8th – Glenn Roeder sacked as Newcastle Manager – he had won 45% of the games he managed for Newcastle United
- May 15th – Sam Allardyce appointed Newcastle manager after he had resigned from former club Bolton a few weeks before that – just the manager we need!
- May 23rd – Mike Ashley buys Newcastle for a combined £134M
- August 14th – Chris Mort appointed new Chairman at the club – Freddy Shepherd leaves
- January 9th 2008 — Sam Allardyce sacked as Newcastle manager and gets £3M payoff- refuses to criticize club – we would hope so!
- Jan 15th – Kevin Keegan appointed as Newcastle manager – Newcastle fans go mad – return oif the Messiah
- January 29th – Dennis Wise is appointed Newcastle’s Director of Football – what?
- Feb 16th – Dennis holds interview with nufcTV and says it is not his job to tell Kevin which players to bring in and which ones to sell – really!
- August 27th – James Milner sold to Aston Villa against the wishes of Kevin Keegan – James seems surprised that Newcastle have let him go after requesting a wage increase at the club
- September 1st – Xisco and Gonzelez (loan) brought to the club on the last day of the transfer window without Kevin’s knowledge – Wow – they were both great last season!
- September 1st – The Newcastle United Blog gets over 100K hits in one day for first time ever
- September 12th – Kevin Keegan sacked or walks out as Newcastle manager – we still don’t know what really happened. But Ashley holds a meeting with Kevin in London on the Friday night but Kevin cannot be persuaded to stay. Kevin now suing the club for up to £8M
- September 11th – Chris Hughton appointed Newcastle caretaker manager
- Septembr 14th – Ashley puts Newcastle club up for sale
- September – December – Newcastle have 1,023 and one half bids from everywhere you could imagine – well that’s according the gossip press – who are having a field day
- September 22nd – – Terry Venables turns down the interim manager position at Newcastle because he couldn’t be guaranteed a permanent position – with the club being on the auction block.
- September 26th- Joe Kinnear appointed interim Newcastle United manager – Joe excited by challenge and seems to make immediate difference- players start to fight – and seemed to have woken up out of their slumbers – seems like Joe smashed then at half time in home Blackburn game – and the came alive in second half.
- December 28th – Mike Ashley announces on Sunday morning there are no buyers and takes Newcastle club off the market
- December 28th Liverpool hammer Newcastle 5-1 and it would have been 10-1 but for a world class performance from goalkeeper Shay Given – he makes 5 stunning world class saves in first 29 minutes – it’s Shay vs Liverpool – before Liverpool finally score on 30 minutes. An absolutely breathtaking performance of goalkeeping from the Newcastle star – other clubs take note.
- December 29th Shay Given has had enough of the owners at Newcastle and requests a transfer
- January 30th 2009 – Manchester City complete the sale of Shay Given (after over 460 appearances for Newcastle) as Newcastle try desperately to keep their world-class goalkeeper – Shay announces later he had had enough of Ashley – it’s no coincidence he requested a transfer the day after Mike announced he was keeping the club.
- January 31st – As the transfer completes Newcastle get in Kevin Nolan, Ryan Taylor and Peter Lovenkrands in January transfer window – though to be not enough
- January 31st – last day efforts to get in a bunch of players – like Michael Johnson from Manchester City – fail
- January 31st – Newcastle blog site gets 110K hits on last day of transfer window – biggest ever
- Feb 7th – Joe Kinnear taken to the hospital with heart problems before WBA crucial game at the Hawthorns
- Feb 7th – Newcastle get a fantastic 3-2 win at WBA – things are looking up – we all see a big light at the end of the tunnel
- Feb 10th – Ashley announces Chris Hughton and Colin Calderwood will manage the side until Joe Kinnear returns in 8 weeks and that next season the management team will be Kinnear, Hughton and Calderwood – Newcastle fans are completely underwhelmed.
- April 1st – right out of the blue Alan Shearer is appointed interim manager (how many interim managers do we have?) for last 8 game of the season – we all think it’s an an April Fool’s joke.
Alan appoints Iain Dowie as Assistant manager – everybody is pumped up – this is great!
Newcastle fans delirious and believe the club will be saved - April 2nd – The Newcastle United Blog announces it was going to close down today, but with the surprise announcement of Shearer, the blog will continue until the end of the season as a sign of respect for Alan, in his efforts to save the club. But the blog has taken on a life of its own and can hardly pays its way.
- April 3rd – present – where is Michael Owen? – we don’t hear a word from the captain, and he has hamstring strain and misses second last game game against Fulham, after he had been dropped earlier by Shearer.
Michael ends the season in silence not scoring a goal for Newcastle in the final 4 months of the season. One goal in the last minute of the season would have been enough to have saved Newcastle from relegation. Owen leaves Newcastle in worst deal ever for a Premier League club – and costs Newcastle £1.3M/goal for his 30 goals in 4 seasons. He will never return – and he didn’t even say goodbye. - April 4th – In first game Chelsea beat Newcastle 2-0 at St. James Park and our losing ways continue
- May 3rd – Joey Barton returns from injury for his first start since January in Liverpool game and gets himself sent off and misses the rest of the season
- May 3rd – big argument with Shearer and Barton in Newcastle dressing room after the game – Joey calls Alan a sh*t manager with sh*t tactics – big mistake by Joey. We all think well – that’s the last game that jail-bird will play for Newcastle
- May 11th – Newcastle play magnificently and beat fellow relegation strugglers Middlesbrough 3-1, the first win since the WBA game – there’s that light at the end of the tunnel again shining brightly
- May 16th – in next home game we lose against Fulham, who before the game had won just 2 games away from Craven Cottage all season. Bassong manages to get himself sent off in second half – and our best player will miss the last game of the season at Villa Park
- May 24th – a draw would do it against Aston Villa a way – but we manage to lose 1-0 again, and Newcastle are are relegated – the last 45 minutes of that game will go down in Newcastle History as a disgrace and shame the famous fighting Newcastle United club
- May 24th -Steven Taylor is more than distraught at the end of the game – other players rush to the dressing room to speak with their agents – “get me out of here! This must never happen again at Newcastle – with players seemingly not caring for the club at all – just the money
- May 24th Fans weep, blog owners fall into deep depression and rip into the players, especially captain Michael Owen, and Alan Shearer in his post match interview manages not to break down – but only just, but the Geordie native is totally devastated – just like the rest of us. It’s the first time we’ve seen Alan that distraught – ever.
- May 24th – present – the gossip press seem pleased that “big Club” Newcastle are relegated – that will show those daft Geordies – and pour salt in the wounds – but what’s new?
In the last 20 Premier league games of the season, the team has just 12 points with 2 wins and 6 draws – we deserve to be relegated – let’s fact it - May 25th – Alan Shearer announces there is a lot of work to do in pre-season, and is in long talks over several days with the Newcastle hierarchy – Newcastle fans await his appointment as long-term manager
- May 28th – owner Mike Ashley apologized for everything – he takes it on the chin with an apology probably written for him by Alan Shearer. We hear no apologies at all from other players who leave Newcastle last Tuesday and many will not return. Michael leaves in his helicopter and we never heard one word from our captain over the last 6 weeks – what’s going on? Some captain!
- May 29th – Newcastle club announces that 150 non-playing staff will be redundant – we estimate the wages of all of those to be close to the wages of captain Michael Owen – £5.5M/year
- May 30th 9:30 pm (had he been drinking?) Mike Ashley announces the club is up for sale – he’s had enough and he’s made some terrible decision- really?
- May 31st – The Newcastle United Blog announces it will stay up – how can we leave with the club in this terrible mess? We nail our colors to the Newcastle mast – just like Steven Taylor, Beye and Duff have done.
A donate button is placed on the site, from readers suggestions, in hopes of making some money to keep the blog alive – fat chance. - The club is in turmoil again with no manager and new owners coming in – supposedly – and only 4 weeks left before the players report back for – who’s doing any real work at Newcastle?
Nobody
The Newcastle soap opera of last season is nominated for the Grammies (how is that possible?) and is immediately red hot favorite to win – a film deal is said to be in the works. Rumors have it that Danny Devito wants to play Mike Ashley – what? - June 2nd – who knows?
- Go back to step 4 – for Mike Ashley – insert new owner name – and replace £134M with new price – £90M? And let’s hope the new steps that follow are a hell of a lot better than these steps!
We’ll add one or two more points above for completeness with accurate dates – so we will have a full history of all of this nonsense.
As you may have already guessed, we’ve been asked to do this by the Hollywood producers, who seem anxious to put the screen-play together. 😀
If we’ve missed any major points let us know.
Comments always welcome.

Comment #47bey- you can guarantee that in his press conference he will say: I am still world class! My record speaks for itself. Class is permanent and form is temporary. I never wanted to leave liverpool in the first place. I think i am worth every penny of mymulti million contract. I didnt feel i owed newcastle anything. They had some of my best year. My injuries are over.blah, blah, blah. He will then pull up in pre season!

I haven’t read it as I never read anything he says. He says things just for effect.

He’s right about the players but a blind man on a galloping horse could see that.
Why not Shearer? Nobody could do anything with them players. We’ve tried experienced managers before and they have done nothing.
Give him a chance and see what he can do.
Barca gave Guadiola a go and also Ajax gave Cruyff a chance and he didn’t do too bad

Comment #54You should employ the best manager available that the club can get, getting someone with no experience just because other experienced managers didn’t work out is as bad as the club avoiding foreign managers because Gullit flopped here.
Shearer didn’t change anything here apart from the formation 3 or 4 times per game, I know it wasn’t his fault and he had to work with other peoples players but I didn’t see any positives on the pitch, add to that Dowie has been poor nearly everywhere he’s coached/managed and I don’t see any reason to feel optimistic.
The only plus side is you don’t have to be a brilliant manager to get a team out of the Championship and his ability will be judged on what happens in the Premiership, if we ever get back.

Comment #56Because the only experience he’s got he’s shown nothing in the way of tactics at all, he hasn’t got any experience of rebuilding a club either or experience as a coach.
Fans just feel the need to pin their hopes on a hero.

Comment #59I still believe Shearer will sign, one does`nt get the opportunity to manage their hometown club very often in life.
My concern is that we may lose Carver (one of the best coaches in the country) who in my opinion will be the tactician that Shearer needs at this juncture of his career.
Like Zola and Clarke @ the Hammers.
Looking at the leaked wage demands and transfer kitty, Shearer may have to compromise
on both.
Face it 10m. over 4 years for a rookie is a lot of dough , perhaps between 10 & 15m. plus the resulting funds generated by sales would be enough to bring in the players needed to gain promotion.
I am sure Shearer could be a magnate for young ambitious talent, with the possibility of of early promotion, which of course would`nt hurt attendance, Geordies will go to see a young hungry team that give their all, after all they still watched this present lot play crap football.
There has to be a compromise, at this stage we know Ashley is not about to spend any unnecessary funds on anything or anybody.
Shearer should compromise and sign, making sure he brings in Carver (could`nt care less about Dowie, never rated him and dont know what he is doing here)
At least if in fact the club are sold, he is firmly in place with an added incentive to succeed if he wants to retain his gig.
And who knows what any new owners may bring to the table ? (as long as Fat Freddy is`nt included)

According to redandwhitekop.com Owen has rejoined liverpool! To be fair to the bloke that has posted it on there, he was first with the news they had signed robbie keane a good 2 months before there was news in the media that liverpool were interested.
I am amazed he has got his dream move as i didnt think benitez rated him. Your better off without him imo!”
Well mate, thats the first comment I’ll commend you on ever…
But still dont believe its true… Benitez is a world class manager and he would waste his time with a useless prat like Owen.
He has built his team around players with either massive work rate or superb technique…. Owen has neither… in fact I’m not quite sure why Owen doesnt just retire… He is that bad…

Comment #61Dont know about you guys and I know he probably would take the job now but I really think the Burnley manager is done a great job and he seems to know how to get his team to play when it counts… Cant think of his name right now.
Im also happy for Shearer to stay on but only if he works under the guidance of top quality coaches like Steve Clark or John Carver etc.
Gordon Strachan is also a good shout, I really enjoy his character and he has done well with the clubs he has managed even without finances.

Comment #621.Glen Roeder was sacked because of overwhelming boo’s from the fans after the slump that saw them shoot down the table. Despite Roeder being a an ex Toon player, ex fan favourite and the hero from the season before who – not only saved them from almost certain relegation – but also got them into Europe and won them a long awaited trophy, albeit one that is often seen as insignificant. Good reward for his efforts eh?
2.Sam Allardyce was sacked because of overwhelming boo’s from the fans after a short slump that saw them drop a couple of places down the table. Despite Allardyce being a Northerner with a keen eye for foreign talent and a reputation as a strong tactician built up from years of guiding an underwhelming side into high places in the top tier of football, this strong and stable manager was seen an unexciting and therefore not good enough for the recent brand of Toon fan that was emerging on the stands. Mike Ashley, the recent chairman, decided to listen to fans as he was weak minded, understood little about football and was desperate to win over their popularity as if he was some sort of waning Big Brother star hoping to avoid nomination.
3.January 15th – Kevin Keegan is brought in as manager by Ashley, still desperate to win over the recent volatile nature of the Toon fans. Most in Newcastle rejoice – apart from those fans who remember that Keegan had twice left Newcastle before as manager. First time he spat his dummy out the pram because he wasn’t getting his own way and second time because he couldn’t take the club any further. Good reasons, sure (!) but both times left Newcastle in a massively dangerous situation and the club was only saved by a certain Kenny coming in and guiding them to the FA cup final (we know what his reward was)
4.January 28th – Ashley, worried about Keegan’s obvious quitting mentality and lack of recent managerial experience, hoped that bringing in Dennis Wise would be a wise choice just in case the newly appointed gaffer pulled a ‘Keegan’. Wise, an admittedly strange choice given his lack of North East knowledge tried desperately to be a low key appointment, avoiding the press like the plague. The press – angered by this – create their own stories about his position. Newcastle begin to look like a circus
5.August 27th – James Milner, who had previously tried to leave the club and was becoming increasingly agitated by his inconsistency in the starting line up (grr, must be Ashley and Wise making those kind of decisions eh?) and his lack of a proper wage… even though his money was quite pleasant and Newcastle had to decrease their wage bill for the squad players.
6.September 1st – Xisco brought in as a player with a promising future and Gonzelez brought in to cover the increasing numbers of injuries to the squad (like most loan players are). Both players in turn got injured and never made any kind of impact on the first team squad… that’ll be Ashley and Wise again, the p*icks.
7.September 12th – Shock Horror (to anybody who didn’t see it coming), the gaffer pulls a Keegan and walks out after not getting his own way (Seem to remember a certain SBR predicting that one). The club had been doing quite well, holding the title winners to a draw and beating Bolton before going down to a very good Arsenal side. Still, seems a perfect time in the season to leave the club you love. Ashley, mortified that a) he was right to bring in managerial cover and b) he can’t use his managerial cover because it doesn’t sit right with the fans, tries desperately to bring Keegan back in. But dummy has been spat.
8.Chris Hughton, the umpteeth coach to cover as caretaker in recent history does so as the only other options are Wise (the fans wouldn’t like that, just in case that wasn’t clear) or asking a senior player to take over… Butt? Owen? They’re both great leaders
9.September 14th – Ashley, realises that despite every effort to become the best pal of the Newcastle fans (wearing the shirt at games didn’t work, drinking beer with the fans didn’t work, appointing Keegan didn’t work… maybe he should have made the tickets free or employed Cheryl to gives BJ’s upon entry to the ground?). He tries to sell the club.
10.The press love the circus and Newcastle become the subject of one or two bids
11.September 22nd – Venables make publicly clear what is clear to most already. Newcastle have problems
12.September 26th – Joe Kinnear relishes the chance to return to football. Press love this more. They clash. Newcastle fans not too keen on appointment. I guess Hiddink, Mourinho etc probably wanted the job but Ashley appointed Kinnear because he was sure to do a better job. Or maybe Newcastle had become career suicide for respectable managers.
13.December 28th – No one wants to buy a club where you get criticism from all angles… including fans.
14.January – Given jumps ship and no one blames him. Club about to implode. Bucks are passed and everyone concerned agrees that everything that has ever happened to Newcastle that is bad including Given wanting to join a massively rich club is Mike Ashley’s fault. After all, he’s a Spurs fan.
15.January – the highly reliable Nolan is brought from Bolton with the idea that his years of captaincy might give Newcastle some leadership qualities on the pitch. R Taylor is bought in because of plenty of experience at a young age and his versatility means injury concerns to key players might be relieved in midfield and defence. Neither has scored as many as Gerrard or Ronaldo this season so Ashley has failed again.
16.Despite the club’s best efforts on a strenuous transfer day, the club fail to buy the massive prospect Michael Johnson because Mark Hughes believes in the youngsters. Johnson has since played every game and has outshone Robinho and Stephen Ireland, proving that Hughes honestly does believe in giving his best young player a chance.
17.February 7th – Joe Kinnear’s wife releases a press statement thanking the Newcastle fans for their wonderful support of her husband during his first year back in football management. She’s particularly grateful that he hasn’t received any boo’s from the crowd and has been given a reprieve for not doing so well in the transfer market. Despite all this support and love, JK is taken ill.
18.February 10th – The Special One is playing hard to get with Ashley so he chooses his only other option of using Hughton and Calderwood in a caretaker position (like McPhaul and Roeder before) in the hope that until the position is made any clearer, the two proven coaches can keep the boat afloat. Rather than turning the position down because it may tarnish their reputations in coaching, the two jump at the chance to help when needed and subsequently the fans show their appreciation for their efforts at the next home game.
19.April 1st – Ashley is still desperate for one single fan to like him. Any fan would do. It would only take one and he’ll feel all warm and fuzzy. He appoints Shearer as caretaker and Shearer accepts. But of course, Shearer is a Newcastle fan so he doesn’t like Ashley either. And makes that clear in his first press conference. Shearer appoints Dowie as Assistant, which is funny really because Dowie has heaps of experience and Shearer doesn’t.
20.April 4th – Newcastle lose to Chelsea. But hold on a second Newcastle LOST to Chelsea? WTF! Don’t Newcastle usually walk that fixture?
21.Barton plays against Liverpool in a game that can simply be described as the worst game of football Newcastle have EVER played. Seriously. Liverpool should actually be ashamed of themselves that it wasn’t 7-0 at the end of the first half. Each player looked unaware of the little bouncy thing that the players in red kept kicking around. Oh, and before and after this game nearly every single player had come out describing the wonderful effect Shearer had on the team. How lovely. Barton gets sent off in what can only be described as pure frustration for being the only outfield player looking to win the ball back. He’ll never play in black and white again and most agree that’s probably for the best
22.May 3rd – Barton and Shearer argue because Barton doesn’t think the tactics were very good against Liverpool. Erm, he’s right?!? But don’t criticize Shearer because the players are happy, the manager is happy, the fans are happy and Ashley is happy because a nice, fuzzy, atmosphere has been created where everyone loves each other and Barton can’t dare show frustration for the way the team is heading.
23.May 11th – Newcastle do just enough against Boro and everyone (including this writer admittedly) thinks that actually Newcastle might scrape free of relegation because somehow Liverpool didn’t score thirty goals against us this season and we have a slightly better goal difference than Hull.
24.May 16th – We play a side that has stormed the league this season but don’t look particularly bothered about beating them. A draw will do eh? The boys come out their comas to manage a goal but a daft ref says Nolan did a Nolan in the box… Boy who cried wolf anyone? THAT’S why Newcastle will get relegated. Bassong also gets sent off for a professional foul and becomes the 7th player in a Newcastle shirt to do so this season.
25.Previous Entertainers groan in agony at the purely filthy challenges and needless cards that Newcastle have amounted all season. The beautiful football that had attracted many to call the Magpies their second team is long gone and replaced by foul after foul
26.May 24th – Newcastle are lucky once more not to get their asses handed to them on a plate by a Villa side with one eye on their holidays. Carew and Gabby are woefully impotent in front of goal when Colocini and co present the bouncy thing to them time and time again. Edgar gets a second yellow to become No8 and it looks a pretty weak one to all concerned.
27.The Mackems laugh at us and to make matters worse, a Mackem manager sings at us at the KC because quite frankly the season has been an appalling mess
28.May 28th – Ashley apologizes for his part of the relegation. The fans see this as another opportunity to have a dig despite the fact that everything he had ever done to further the club was to desperately please them. His obvious flaws was a lack of professionalism from the get go; treating the club like a hobby rather than a job and enjoying the initial joy from the fans just a little too much. He was weak and often made snappy decisions (Allardyce sacking, Keegan appointment, Shearer appointment) in the hope of pleasing the fans when actually a chair man with balls would have told them to sod off and let him make the decisions he was supposed to be making. He should have checked the business properly before inheriting because ever since he realised (erm, and cleared) the massive debt the club was in, he was constantly trying to run the club with his arm behind his back. He was seen as tight with transfers, but there is no surprise he had to be given the horrible state the club was in before and was seen as interfering in Keegan’s business; as much as I love KK’s involvement at the club he was untrustworthy as a long term appointment and made decisions on a whim. The fans criticism of him as being a Spurs fan is ridiculous; see the look of pure joy on his face when we beat them? I’ve been a fan of the club for twenty odd years and went to games regularly between 80’s and SBR’s reign, but have become increasingly agitated with the ‘new fans’. St James Park can hardly call itself a nice atmosphere anymore for players or managers. They have been crap in recent years and have made mistakes but entertainment is something that established sides achieve (and some of them don’t even do that), yet the fans now want that above all else. I’m still disappointed in Big Sam’s sacking and knew instantly it would lead to relegation. The man set out to stabilise the club and all he got was criticism from his own crowd. Now the club has been relegated and the fans are calling for stability… hmm
29.Ashley is criticised again for trying to sell the club despite the fact that he was criticised earlier for not selling the club.
As a club we used to be indecisive but now we’re not sure
