Alan Shearer Wants Spurs’ Chris Gunter On Tyneside

News is steadily leaking out on the players Alan Shearer has on his wanted list, that he presented to owner Mike Ashley during his talks last week.

Chris Gunter – 19 year old Welsh International

It seems the former (future?) Newcastle United manager Alan Shearer is keen on 19 year-old Tottenham defender Chris Gunter.

The London Evening Standard says Alan Shearer, who of course is still negotiating his own future at his home town club, has told owner Mike Ashley that signing Welsh international Gunter is a priority for the club this summer.

Christopher Ross Gunter (born 21 July 1989 in Newport), was sent out on loan on 12th March this year to Nottingham Forest for the rest of last season, and in 2007 he became the youngest Cardiff City player ever to play for the full Welsh team.

He can play in either full-back position, but prefers it on the right hand side, and has already played 15 times for Wales already.

The 5’11” Gunter has been made available by Spurs boss Harry Redknapp and will cost Shearer around £3M.

The player started at Cardiff  in 2006 (28 appearances) but then he moved to Spurs in 2008, where he has played 5 times for the first team. While on loan at Nottingham Forest he played 8 times, and has played through all the Welsh Youth Teams since 2005.

Gunter became the second youngest player to play for the Wales Under-21 team when he played against Cyprus Under-21 at just 16 and was 17 when he made his full International debut.

He certainly looks a decent young player with high potential, and as we said yesterday, it looks like Alan wants to bring in some decent full backs in the summer, as a first priority.

Comments welcome.

How does this get out to the press.

Why would we even bother going after a shearer target if he aint gonna be the manager say.

I would say something doesnt quite ring true unless he is the manager already and they are just sorting the money side before they announced it with being relegated.

    Hmm he says.

    I don’t know. £3M !!??!!

Danny Simpson for £1M might be a better buy.

No doubt benny has something to say on this matter.

Shearer could always volunteer to work for 3 months ‘on trial’ without a contract. Financially it would have little effect on him, he could put all the deals he wants in place – and even sign people if the money was granted to him. And if new owners didn’t want him he could walk away with no cost to them, the club or his reputation. It would demonstrate to all what the club really means to him and his belief in his own abilities. If he was kept on he could arrange arrears of pay. If he wasn’t then no harm done!

More likely Spurs would offer him as part-ex for Stephen Taylor?

Good post Spitfire… after all didn’t Al want to test Ashley’s commitment to the club?

Seen that about Allardyce wanting Smith for £2.5M as a bargain replacement for Roque Santa Cruz.

Shurely Sam remembers that as onr of his ‘failure appointments’ he didnt score a single competetive goal for Newcastle. We should try and flog him Barton while he’s at it.

The club is for sale at a bargain price and Ashley has said he wants out as soon as possible so he isn’t committed to pumping more money in.

Shearer isn’t going to spend the Summer here unless he gets a transfer kitty which is also dependent on the deal with Barclays, if he hasn’t got any money then there’s no point in him spending the Summer involved with the club.

I dont think we should be looking to offload S.Taylor. He was born for the scrappyness of the Championship.

DJG – I like how most of the articles talk about how Allardyce will get him playing again because he’s the sort of bloke who gets players careers back on track.

It conveniently ignores that he was shiite while they worked together for 6 months here.

as i said yesterday, spurs have lodged a bid for taylor. I doubt he will be sold until you have a manager in place at which point i guess a swap deal could take place. As you dont have a manager this is probably media rubbish.

Gunter is a promising player and i would be sad to see him go but i havent heard harry wants rid, just that offers will be listened to for a lot of our squad.

Will you all stop posting how bad our players are. You will put people off buying them. At least lets pretend they were very very good… just a little bit misunderstood thats all. Otherwise they will still be here next season and we will be relegated again

Is Kinnear still on the books?

If he is then it’s likely to be because his contract is up to a certain date, similar to how Viduka, Owen and Cacapa are still on the books..

rangerman- as you have access to glory glory please feel free to post there comments that show i have copied anything from there. As you cant i will politely ask that you refrain from tarnishing my good name with such lies. Just because someone is more informed than you about your own club doesnt mean you should feel so threatened that you need to attack that person.

    Good day.

“I have been told that the manager (Harry Redknapp) does not want to sell me and another loan move would be good for me.

“If that is what happens it would be fine by me. I have had two managers already at Spurs with different ideas and coaching methods.

“But never in my career have I had a run of 20 or more games on the spin, or even played a 50-game season.

“So I need to go out on loan to learn my trade, how to play a consistent amount of games. It worked well for me at Nottingham Forest and if someone said I was going back there for a season I would be happy with that.”

He added: “The set-up was impressive, Forest are a big club with crowds of 26,000 most weeks. The manager there (Billy Davies) was good and I really enjoyed playing there.

“Everyone knows they used to be a big club, but I discovered that they still are. In my second away game with them, they took 6,000 fans to Barnsley and that doesn’t happen in the Championship.

“It is all there for them to go as high as they want. And they gave me a good spell to progress from.

“I still have two years left at Spurs, the manager has not said I have a future or not because you have to prove that to him and I intend to do so.

“But I need to know definitely soon where I will be next season and then concentrate on giving my best to whoever I join and see where we go from there.”

Maybe we could get him on a season long loan. That way we could see if he would be good enough or not without paying £3M. Which is now a lot of money to us. If he is as good as people say then he wouldn’t worry about Habib Beye (who is starting to become slightly injury prone anyway).

reetpetite – You quite clearly are getting things from Spurs messageboards and it seems to be a common theme with Spurs fans who like to feel important and make out they are getting the info first hand.

An example is someone posted on this morning on a Spurs forum about Keane likely to be leaving only for you to turn up on here telling us like you know someone personally in the club.

rangerman- As i also post on spurs boards(spurscommunity, spursodysey) do you not think that it is reasonable to expect my information to be banded about on there. Also i am not the only person to have links to spurs so it is natural that the same info will turn up elsewhere. I have had 2 pieces of itk regarding man city that i have posted on here, do you honestly think i would get that info from a spurs board. I have always posted my transfer rumours on here even though i have been shot down in the past when deals have fallen through and i will continue to do so. If you dont want to believe it dont read my posts.

Don’t most people have contracts nowadays?
The reason all those people were sacked, is because they are little people who can’t afford the lawyers to take the club to court.

Michael owen should have been sacked for being a gutless little twerp but because he is so rich that is not possible

What ? the London Standard is quoting Big Al.
FFS, he does`nt even know if he has a job himself.
Enough with the speculation, give us facts.
It`s like deja vu all over again, this is one of the first among probably hundreds of players who will be linked to the club throughout the coming off season, it`s nonsense.
