Newcastle’s Oba Martins In Great Demand

June 4th, 2009 by Ed Harrison · 121 Comments

If Newcastle play their transfer cards well this summer, we could still recuperate quiet a bit of money from selling some of our high wage earners.

BRITAIN SOCCER

Oba Martins – Everton,  Arsenal and Aston Villa interest?

We will have some difficulty with most of them, like Xisco and Coloccini for example, because the reasoning will be they cannot be that good if they helped Newcastle be relegated.

But some of the players were still good last year, and Oba Martins with 8 goals, and some spirited performances in the last few games was one of them.

And it shouldn’t be much of a surprise that Premier League clubs are in for him this summer.

The 24 year-old Nigerian international striker is expected to leave St James Park this summer, following the Magpies relegation from the Premier League this season.

His agent has told Sky Sports there is quite a demand for his client with at least three top Premier Clubs interested in taking him. Arsenal, Aston Villa and Everton are the three and Arsene Wenger has always been interested in the player, but we wouldn’t be too surprised if he ends up at Aston Villa.

The main thing Newcastle fans would like to see is to recuperate the £10M we paid Inter-Milan for him 3 years ago. Oba is one of the few players Newcastle could get their money back on – so we just have to hope there is even more interest for Oba from other clubs.

Next season we should have some decent players up front, because Alan will bring one or two new strikers in, and we already have Carroll, Lovenkrands (hopefully), Ameobi and Nile Ranger, who will all be ready to fight it out for a first team striker position.

Owen, Viduka, Smith and Martins will all leave the club this summer, and will save the club £310K/week – that’s around £16M over a year – WOW. Those players were not worth those wages – that’s for sure.

Ameobi may also be moved out to a Premier League side in the summer, because we have both Ranger and Carroll available, who are similar players to Shola, but a lot younger, on lower wages – and now coming through strongly.

That also is why Martins will leave, simply because we cannot afford him and his £65K/week wages, and £10M would be very nice to be able to buy other players with.

If  Shearer takes over the club, the only high wage-earners we think he’ll  keep around are Butt, Nolan, Beye, Guthrie, Harper, the two Taylors, Duff and Bassong.

Of course we will  have a fight on our hands to keep Sebastien  Bassong, and we’ll only have a chance of keeping him if  Alan Sheraer takes over as manager, and very soon at that.

Comments welcome.

Sorry to see him leave but I’d be happy if he moved back to Italy :)

  • 2 Bill F // Jun 4, 2009 at 8:42 PM

Always been a big disappointment for me, he would score a spectacular goal and then miss a dozen more. Had he scored from any of the chances he had in the last few games we would have stayed up. He will probably go to have a great career with a top team who can afford to have him as a luxury but I don’t think he really ever looked the part for us imo.

Its got to be part of the business plan to shift the high wage earners for as much as possible to save the wage bill and generate income.

The fact no one has a relegation clause is just laughable and has bit we on the ass.

It’s funny when you read fans say how rubbish our team is yet most of our players will go to decent teams throughout Europe with European football, we on the other hand will be moaning about their replacements soon enough while playing the likes of Doncaster and Peterborough.

I still think he’s miles better than Ameobi, but you’re quite right, given we already have Ranger and Carrol, we’d need to be getting like for like in the event of a Martins sale I.E. small, pacey ball to feet player – a clinical finisher would be nice too.

IF ashley dusent get a buyer we will be lucky to start the season with 11 men he will get rid of that many harper will be up front with shola and the tea lady in goal if he hasnt sacked her and got lambarse to make the tea

  • 31 Rangerman // Jun 4, 2009 at 9:31 PM

The thing that puts me off Beckford is his age, if we get back into the Premiership after one season then will he be able to adapt to the top flight a few months off turning 27?

I remember there was another player playing in the league Beckford was playing in now (Lee Trundle) and he was banging the goals and was easily the most talented player in that division, yet when he made the step up to the Championship he struggled, he was a few years older than Beckford at the time but it’s still a concern.

    whats the odds

  • 34 waddler // Jun 4, 2009 at 9:32 PM

l really don’t get why a lot of supporters rate Martins.
Potentially he could be top draw, but he seems not to utilize his pace by peeling of the central defenders shoulder and continually finds himself offside because he is not aware of his main markers position.
He also drifts into winger or wing/back positions and basically causing bloody mayhem with the teams balance.
Sell him and use Ranger/Caroll/Ameobi next season and let Shearer work on them on the training ground.
If we manage to keep Shearer as manager and he can talk Bassong into staying we will have the nucleus of a good defence, as Shearer seems to be doing he will need backup in that department, two or three full backs depending on Enrique’s future.
The midfield is were we will have to do the most work with a creator and destroyer the most obvious additions needed, Lovenkrands can patrol the flanks.

hahaha, cheeky fker, cider actually. And no, betting on football.

Rangerman, the other thing that puts me off Beckford is he’s another bad boaaay, and a lot of Leeds fans reckon he’s a lazy player.

Good finish on this clip, but check his elbow on the ‘keeper. Dirty fker.

The most worrying now is who & when will get buyer for the club & how long we will stay in limbo over the selling of the club. The most important will be the quality of the buyer. Until this is sorted we can’t go forward.
Then blind man can see you should stay & go. Most of comments have right idea who should go, although saying Duff should go I totally disagree.

Why oh why did Joe Kinnear say that Shola would be great centre forward & then give him new 3 year contract, he should pay Newcastle United the cost of his contract; he will never improve on his ability as soccer player

Alright lads, I’m not one for the ‘my secret inside source said this’, ’cause 99% of the time it’s all bull, BUT, sat having a few pints with my mates tonight and heard of a potential target…

Liverpool’s england U21 player Adam Hamill…Basically my mate lives with his cousin down at uni in Leeds, and apparently Newcastle spoke to him whilst we were still in the Premiership and offered him 15k a week…

I can’t guarantee this as fact, and to be honest, I know nothing of the lad, but a quick look through google brings up his name in very positive light…

What my mate told me, was that he isn’t overly fast, but he has ridiculously quick feet, is very very skillful, takes people on for fun and can play on either the left or right wing.

Anyone know anything else, or have an opinion on him?

If that Guardian article is accurate that was posted last night then it looks as though Shearer is on his hols.

I cant see any announcements about us today. Which is frustrating as its been a long week.

  • 110 Partizan // Jun 5, 2009 at 8:41 AM

All this story about MA selling the club for ONLY 100 mill and cannot find a buyer yet is making me puke.

He can find a buyer today if he wants and sell it even for 120 mill,,,but he doesnt wanna do that.

What he wants first is to sell

    Martins-8 mill
    Colo-7 mill
    Jonas-7 mill
    Xisco-4 mill
    Bassong-12 mill
    Nolan-3 mill
    Enrique-4 mill
    Smith-3 mill
    Geremi-1 mill

When all this is done,he’ll spend maybe 7 mill on some Chamionship and Div 1 players and sell the club for 110 mill.

All in all he’ll walk out with around 145-150 mill this Summer.

  • 111 Partizan // Jun 5, 2009 at 8:43 AM

I wouldn’t be suprised if Krul belongs to that selling list aswell.

  • 112 sahota // Jun 5, 2009 at 8:49 AM

    Its very frustrating guys.
@partizan I would agree with you. I am suspicious by acts of Mike. He will try to reduce his loss and will care less about what happens to us in Championship. I was also thinking same that he will probably first sell the palyers for good £30-40 mil or something around that. Then he might give Shearer some money to spend and buy some players he wants. He will give Shearer a deal and then will try to sell club again and make around £120 mil or around that.

Not sure whats going on. I still think club should come out and give some kind of comments on SHEARER atleast. Or employ someone else. I would say best for both Mike and Newcastle would be that He sells some palyers quickly who can give us £20 mil and then allocate that to Shearer for buying new players. I think that will ease the current crunch we are in.

  • 113 ian // Jun 5, 2009 at 8:56 AM

It just shows how far off the mark some of our fans are with players etc, Martins even with an injury was more dangerous than Owen, always forced the opposition to keep players back and made up in part for a useless midfield, many of our fans realise how good a plyer this man is, many see his awareness etc but that only a few such as Viduka understand and can provide one touch poassing even when he is shoulder to shoulder with the opposition, many teams are interested in this player and yet STILL there are fans who say he is best got rid of, a headless chicken!!! I wonder if they are fans at all or other fans trying to get us to part with our better players, I do not understand these comments at all.

If possible, if a buyer comes in who can afford a premiership club and does want to go back up, then Martins is one of the players that I would like to keep and put out on loan with an option to buy if we do not get back up, I do not see another player available for £10m who can score the number of goals he can AND be so dedicated to our club. If we bounce back up next year, we will have to spend £18m to get any player close to Martin’s quality, it could be a false economy to sell him if we are aiming to get back up.

Do not forget Martins is £10m, Owen was £16m it is price to performance, unless someone amazing buys us I cannot see us going oput next year and buying two £25m strikers if we are back up, can you?

  • 114 Nick 69 // Jun 5, 2009 at 11:41 AM

hitman- agree regarding the other blog, but what did you expect from those two lol, and i also noticed how they come on here and constantly advertise their blog, yet they have links to other Newcastle site on their site and suprise suprise this one isnt there!!

  • 115 Sav // Jun 5, 2009 at 12:29 PM

I agree with Ian, we should wait and see what new owners want to do about Oba. We would sell him in August just as easily as now.
Maybe letting sentiment obscure objectivity a little but he is inexpensive at today’s rates and would cost more to replace. The other aspect is what cost failure to get back up at the first attempt. Oba is a bit flakey – bizarre stories seem to follow him around – but he struggled on for us and did his level best in the final games and is a wild-card who can win matches when we are up against it. He would also benefit from Shearer’s coaching and regular games.

  • 116 bowburnmag // Jun 5, 2009 at 1:32 PM

Nick69 – Actually, I think that’s a fair comment. I’m surprised there’s no link to Ed’s blog. I’ll be suggesting it goes on. I think this is a great blog and I still read it although I stopped posting regularly a couple of month or so ago. No reason why there can’t be two great nufcblogs though eh?

  • 117 Macas35 // Jun 5, 2009 at 1:37 PM

Martins problem is he just has no footballing intelligence, and will always nearly be a great striker for us. He’s scored some great goals but will never be consistent enough. He s one of our most saleable assets so we have to cash in on him.

  • 118 ian // Jun 5, 2009 at 2:45 PM

Macas, if Martins ends up at a club which has quality players in midfield you will see his intelligence, Shearer had excellent assists from Bellamy, even Chopra played some lovely balls along the ground through to him, Martins has had decent service from Nzogbia, the very rare pass from Viduka and that is about it, nothing ever from Owen, Martins doesnt need space like the other players other than Viduka do, they didnt understand and didnt use him to his best ability, he should be the last player we sell because if we get a new owner who hasnt got bottomless pockets but has reasonable backing we will not get as good a player as Martins back for £10m if we go back up, why not think two steps ahead rather than one as we always do?

Other players may sell, enough money may be raised without selling him, I hear an offer may be in shortly anyhow, maybe this weeked or early next at the latest, I hope they manage to pull it off.

  • 119 ian // Jun 5, 2009 at 4:10 PM

I agree Sav, my one major dissappointment about shearer was he didnt improve any of the strikers with his knowledge and own striking ability, because Martins turned out to be injured then maybe fair enough, but like you I thought he would have helped Martins and improved the striker line up and supply more than anyone else.

  • 120 Tom_Toon // Jun 6, 2009 at 2:44 AM

I cant imagine why Arsene would want Martins. He isn’t consistent and doesn’t exactly play possesion and passing football when he first touch is pretty horrendous.

As for Harewood, I disagree that he is any better than Shola.

  • 121 ian // Jun 6, 2009 at 9:24 AM

Tom toon, I could imagine why Arsene would want Martins as he has acknowledged that a few older steady players may be required at times in his team, Martins is definately a one touch player, definately does not get flustered at any match and would raise his game in a one touch team, also he is very cheap for his ability, I wouldnt however understand why Martins would go there, because he would probably be only played if there was an injury to one of the current team, he was put on in the early part of a game to tire the oppositions defenders or of one of the youngsters fell apart in a big game, which they have done on a number of occassions, Martins would always have the possibility of them finding another young Henry and he would never see the light of day again. I do not think he will end up at Arsenal but I do think he would fit in, but may well end up at Everton as I could not believe that any team would be stupid enough to employ Owen after our fiasco, in many ways Owen’s lack of availability and form has attributed greatly to our current predicement over the whole time he has been here (not all his own fault but an important factor), if we had two Martins on the pitch all season we would not be going down, Martins provides regular assists which raises his value, unfortunately only assists that score are recorded in statistics, which is also the reason why Cisse’s full contribution is also not recorded, he would provide the Sunderland team with at least two sitters every match and the player he passed to couldnt put it in the net so it isnt recorded.
I think if Martins ends up at the right team you doubters will be astounded by his ability, many Owen fans bang on and on about him not getting the service, well Oba has had much worse service as Owen never made a break and provided him with anything in the whole season never mind the midfield and rest of the team, plus when Owen is on the pitch he has in the majority of games held the potentially most highest scoring position.
