Tom toon, I could imagine why Arsene would want Martins as he has acknowledged that a few older steady players may be required at times in his team, Martins is definately a one touch player, definately does not get flustered at any match and would raise his game in a one touch team, also he is very cheap for his ability, I wouldnt however understand why Martins would go there, because he would probably be only played if there was an injury to one of the current team, he was put on in the early part of a game to tire the oppositions defenders or of one of the youngsters fell apart in a big game, which they have done on a number of occassions, Martins would always have the possibility of them finding another young Henry and he would never see the light of day again. I do not think he will end up at Arsenal but I do think he would fit in, but may well end up at Everton as I could not believe that any team would be stupid enough to employ Owen after our fiasco, in many ways Owen's lack of availability and form has attributed greatly to our current predicement over the whole time he has been here (not all his own fault but an important factor), if we had two Martins on the pitch all season we would not be going down, Martins provides regular assists which raises his value, unfortunately only assists that score are recorded in statistics, which is also the reason why Cisse's full contribution is also not recorded, he would provide the Sunderland team with at least two sitters every match and the player he passed to couldnt put it in the net so it isnt recorded.
I think if Martins ends up at the right team you doubters will be astounded by his ability, many Owen fans bang on and on about him not getting the service, well Oba has had much worse service as Owen never made a break and provided him with anything in the whole season never mind the midfield and rest of the team, plus when Owen is on the pitch he has in the majority of games held the potentially most highest scoring position.

I cant imagine why Arsene would want Martins. He isn't consistent and doesn't exactly play possesion and passing football when he first touch is pretty horrendous.

As for Harewood, I disagree that he is any better than Shola.

I agree Sav, my one major dissappointment about shearer was he didnt improve any of the strikers with his knowledge and own striking ability, because Martins turned out to be injured then maybe fair enough, but like you I thought he would have helped Martins and improved the striker line up and supply more than anyone else.

Macas, if Martins ends up at a club which has quality players in midfield you will see his intelligence, Shearer had excellent assists from Bellamy, even Chopra played some lovely balls along the ground through to him, Martins has had decent service from Nzogbia, the very rare pass from Viduka and that is about it, nothing ever from Owen, Martins doesnt need space like the other players other than Viduka do, they didnt understand and didnt use him to his best ability, he should be the last player we sell because if we get a new owner who hasnt got bottomless pockets but has reasonable backing we will not get as good a player as Martins back for £10m if we go back up, why not think two steps ahead rather than one as we always do?

Other players may sell, enough money may be raised without selling him, I hear an offer may be in shortly anyhow, maybe this weeked or early next at the latest, I hope they manage to pull it off.

Martins problem is he just has no footballing intelligence, and will always nearly be a great striker for us. He's scored some great goals but will never be consistent enough. He s one of our most saleable assets so we have to cash in on him.

Nick69 - Actually, I think that's a fair comment. I'm surprised there's no link to Ed's blog. I'll be suggesting it goes on. I think this is a great blog and I still read it although I stopped posting regularly a couple of month or so ago. No reason why there can't be two great nufcblogs though eh?

I agree with Ian, we should wait and see what new owners want to do about Oba. We would sell him in August just as easily as now.
Maybe letting sentiment obscure objectivity a little but he is inexpensive at today's rates and would cost more to replace. The other aspect is what cost failure to get back up at the first attempt. Oba is a bit flakey - bizarre stories seem to follow him around - but he struggled on for us and did his level best in the final games and is a wild-card who can win matches when we are up against it. He would also benefit from Shearer's coaching and regular games.

It just shows how far off the mark some of our fans are with players etc, Martins even with an injury was more dangerous than Owen, always forced the opposition to keep players back and made up in part for a useless midfield, many of our fans realise how good a plyer this man is, many see his awareness etc but that only a few such as Viduka understand and can provide one touch poassing even when he is shoulder to shoulder with the opposition, many teams are interested in this player and yet STILL there are fans who say he is best got rid of, a headless chicken!!! I wonder if they are fans at all or other fans trying to get us to part with our better players, I do not understand these comments at all.

If possible, if a buyer comes in who can afford a premiership club and does want to go back up, then Martins is one of the players that I would like to keep and put out on loan with an option to buy if we do not get back up, I do not see another player available for £10m who can score the number of goals he can AND be so dedicated to our club. If we bounce back up next year, we will have to spend £18m to get any player close to Martin's quality, it could be a false economy to sell him if we are aiming to get back up.

Do not forget Martins is £10m, Owen was £16m it is price to performance, unless someone amazing buys us I cannot see us going oput next year and buying two £25m strikers if we are back up, can you?

Its very frustrating guys.
@partizan I would agree with you. I am suspicious by acts of Mike. He will try to reduce his loss and will care less about what happens to us in Championship. I was also thinking same that he will probably first sell the palyers for good £30-40 mil or something around that. Then he might give Shearer some money to spend and buy some players he wants. He will give Shearer a deal and then will try to sell club again and make around £120 mil or around that.

Not sure whats going on. I still think club should come out and give some kind of comments on SHEARER atleast. Or employ someone else. I would say best for both Mike and Newcastle would be that He sells some palyers quickly who can give us £20 mil and then allocate that to Shearer for buying new players. I think that will ease the current crunch we are in.

All this story about MA selling the club for ONLY 100 mill and cannot find a buyer yet is making me puke.

He can find a buyer today if he wants and sell it even for 120 mill,,,but he doesnt wanna do that.

What he wants first is to sell

Martins-8 mill
Colo-7 mill
Jonas-7 mill
Xisco-4 mill
Bassong-12 mill
Nolan-3 mill
Enrique-4 mill
Smith-3 mill
Geremi-1 mill

When all this is done,he'll spend maybe 7 mill on some Chamionship and Div 1 players and sell the club for 110 mill.

All in all he'll walk out with around 145-150 mill this Summer.

If that Guardian article is accurate that was posted last night then it looks as though Shearer is on his hols.

I cant see any announcements about us today. Which is frustrating as its been a long week.
