The players are due to return for pre-season training on July 1st, which is just over a couple of weeks away.
Chris Hughton – only coach at the Newcastle club right now?
And that has to be embarrassing for all concerned. For most of the players, because they can hardly be proud of what they achieved last year, and most of them just want to get out of Newcastle.
And right now it will also be difficult for the club. Why is that?
We have no manager and no coaching staff apart form Chris Hughton who is the only coach (apart from Academy Director Richard Money) still at the club.
And it’s certainly not Chris Hughton’s fault if he is appointed interim manager in the next week or so, since Chris himself went through hell and high water for the club last season, and always did his best.
He just wasn’t good enough in leading the Newcastle side, but his forte is coaching behind a good manager, and in retrospect he did no worse than Shearer and Dowie, as far as the results went last season – they were all terrible.
So that situation will be almost intolerable in a couple of weeks, and if it happens watch for the supporters to have one final opportunity of “thanking” our overpaid and under-performing players of last season, and the mess they’ve got the club into, and down in the Championship.
If the players are not sold in the next couple of weeks, and that looks very unlikely, they are still Newcastle players, and the club is still paying their wages, so they will have to report back for pre-season training.
Exactly who will be there to greet them for training is a very good question – perhaps Ashley and Llambias will be there in their track suits – and they will be about as good at that, as they’ve been running the club this last year.
Can Ashley mess things up any more than he has?
Unfortunately we don’t put anything beyond this incompetent man. If he had been managing in a real job for a real company, and not one he owns, he would have been out of the door by now – long ago.

Comment #3How long do we have to unload players? When does the transfer window close? I am beginning to think that we are going to be lumbered with the same bunch of overpaid clowns who took us down in the first place – at least until January. Also, is Fat Ashley going to pocket as much as he can from sales of players before he sells up? I reckon Ashley is descended from a bunch of war-time black marketeers selling cheap booze and nylons on the street corner.

Comment #4Ericles – we have until 1st September and then a month for loan deals after that. So there is time.
Although we will have played about 6 games by then, so its the speed we get incoming players to build the right sqaud for the Championship that bothers me more than getting the others out quickly. Yes, I want them gone, off the wage bill and selling their shoddy wares to some other mupper owner but the importance of getting off to a good start in the Championship can’t be underestimated. Tough division.

Comment #8I blame Chris Hughton as well as Ashley for our relegation. He is an absolute shoddy coach and how he got jobs in Tottenham and Newcastle beggers belief.
God help us if he takes carge again. The only time I think he ever got three points was when Kinnear took ill and the players actually bothered to show up for a change (albiet against the weakest team).

Comment #9DJG, i disagree i thought hughton did a good job in teh circumstances. wasnt he brought in to help our defence? and personally i thought our defence was our best asset this yr! our problem was we just couldnt score any goals lik. i mean personally this has to have been our best defence in recent yrs, beye bassong taylor colo (he got sum unecessary stick imo, he did a decent job in his first yr) enrique (much improved and did great in the games he played!). hughton did a gd job of organising them. again our problem was up front and in midfield, with duke and martins out for half the season is it a wonder where our oriblem was?

Comment #12If Hughton does pick up the reins again then he will have to tighten up the ship until a manager is put in place.
Shearer has already indicated the training pitch was far from up to standard.

Comment #13Chris Hughton he his the last person for running the players side. He & Calderwood made complete hash of being in temporary charge. When is Ashley going to learn. Please use your common sense & sort out this mess .
Mike Ashley you’ve made pig ear of Newcastle United & admit to it.
This needs Alan Shearer to made manager & let him try to bring some constructive structure to this mess

Comment #14Look Hughton is clearly a reliable coach and a nice bloke – well liked by nearly all the managers and players he’s worked with…
BUT he has proven here and in a very short spell at Spurs that he can’t lead a first team as manager. More importantly he is associated closley with the clubs current heirachy. I know Keegan brought him in but he is the only 1st team coach from KK’s brief second reign who chose the stay. He spoke for the owner and showed very little vision.
The man does not inspire you with confidence as a leader. Which players would want to stay or join us under his leadership?

Comment #17Why is everyone giving Hughton so much stick? He isn’t a manager but agreed to put his neck on the line and help the club out when we were in trouble, and this is the thanks he gets? He didn’t get the results but neither did Shearer, and yet everyone is calling for him to be manager. The truth is we had an awful team last season with no creativity and it would be hard for any manager to pick up points with what we had. And lets face it no one here knows if Hughton does his job well as coach so why not cut him a little slack?

‘DJG, i disagree i thought hughton did a good job in teh circumstances. wasnt he brought in to help our defence? and personally i thought our defence was our best asset this yr!’
I dont think Hughton improved the defense, I think it was just that before we had Bramble, Boumsong, Stephen Carr ect, all prone to mistakes. Then this season we signed Bassong who apart from 2 red cards was faultless. Coloccini despite what people say was actually half decent, particularly at the start of the season. Also Enrique and Steven Taylor both settled down and has a better season. So I just think we had better defenders although your right Hughton mabey deserves some credit for the better form of Taylor and Enrique. This all doesn’t detract from the fact that he is a shoddy coach and hopeless manager.

Comment #19DJG, i agree he is a useless manager, but shoddy coach? hes done a good job at organinsing the defnece, weve been without beye most of the season, and right at the start of the season our defence was pretty good, that was without bassong as i recall. again hughton has done a decent job with us, and i dont blame him in ne way. who else could we have picked to lead the team whilst managerless? the problem was our attack, which wasnt down to hughton.

Comment #21One thing i would say in Hughtons defence , is that he went on record to say he never wants to be a manager and just wants to concentrate on coaching . The guy was made manager by circumstances that he himself could do nothing about , at least the bloke tried and did not leave a sinking ship .
