It’s the news we all wanted to hear, and the Newcastle Journal broke the news this morning that it’s more than likely that Alan Shearer will be installed as the permanent manager, and possibly this week.
Freddy Shepherd – new owner at Newcastle?
Kevin Llambias was quoted today as saying the due diligence can only start tomorrow on the Newcastle books, and we understand that at least two potential buyers are ready to do that, with one of them led by former Chairman Freddy Shepherd.
We have no idea who the other bidder is, and we’d doubt if it was the one from Oman and involving the Sultan, or the Profitable Group, who have yet to prove they have the money to buy the Tyneside club.
But maybe the other bidder is the American consortium there were growing rumors over yesterday. That’s certainly a possibility and a number of rumors on this site suggest that even Microsoft could be involved, but that’s probably a stretch.
But in any case it seems there are two at least, and the announcement maybe this Thursday. That announcement is described as a big announcement for the club by Derek Llambias so it may even involve the new owners as well as Alan.
It could potentially be that an initial deal has been agreed to – pending the completion of due diligence, and if that happens and it’s Freddy Shepherd, that would be an enormous coup for Shepherd, the lad born and bred in Byker. That’s right next to St. Anthony’s estate, along the River Tyne, where I was brought up – and my mother used to always tell by brother and I it was the posh estate between Walker and Byker – right!
Newcastle are officially opening their books for due diligence and it looks they have some real interest at the know-down price of around £100M, and when the owners are appointed, it will be interesting to see the plans they have for the club.
That announcement may not be this week, but the sooner the better, since Shearer will need to know what his transfer budget and wage budget is for the coming season.
And the very fact that Llambias saying it is up to the new owners to appoint Alan, also suggests there may be a buyer, that has already agreed terms with Ashley.
But as we know, nothing is ever easy at the Newcastle club, we would not hold our breath about the Thursday announcement, but what we would hope for is that the local papers are able to find out more about the consortia that seem closest to making the deal.
But this has to be good news, amid the last 3 weeks where’ there’s been a distinct lack of any good news about the Tyneside club.
Just the usual ridicule from the popular press, but once Alan is installed we would expect a lot of that to stop – but those are famous last words, and we’ll just have to wait and see.
But Alan will put a local charismatic face on the Newcastle club, there’s little doubt about that.

Comment #82Rod, id rather c carrol given first team footy ahead of campbell, not cos hes a geordie but cos i believe campbell is similiar in style to martins and i think carrol would compliment campbell/martins quite well. altho id rather not c campbell here!
id also like to c barton stay, hed b immense in the ccc and i do think shearer could tame him.
and any news regarding a new manager would b a plus for me tbh even if it was to say shearer isnt our manager, id like shearer to stay but being stuck without knowing anything is worse than recieving bad news.

Comment #87Fraizer Campbell would be a dream signing.
Has proved himself good enough in the Championship two years back, then last season has gained experience at Tottenham.
What’s the problem here?
Obafemi Martins is still unlikely to stay with us with his wages and the like, so if he goes who do we have?
Carroll, Ranger, Lovenkrands? Getting Beckford and Campbell would be good business in my opinion.
We need to improve our situation in the midfield, no doubt about it and we need more pace and drive coming from it.
Down the wings we miss Milner and N’zogbia types who would provide the pace and drive and create goals. We need similar type players to come in to supply the front two whomever they are.
Driver from Hearts could be a good shout!
What about in the center of the park? Guthrie is okay, Butt not good enough, Nolan will be gone, Barton wont be here, Geremi gone….we need some quality in there also, someone like a Gomez would be a good start, considering Boro a team that has potential to be around with us will have Digard still with them who is a class player, we need to get to that level yeah?. We need more quality in a lot of different areas.
Hopefully Steven Taylor and Bassong stay, Habib Beye will stay I believe, thats three strong components in the back four, Enrique will go, Colloccini will go, Cacapa should go, so more depth and a left back is needed, like the rumours about Gunter too.
So far the rumored guys in Campbell, Beckford, Gunter and Skjelbred is a great start to a transfer period, lets hope it gets started too.

Comment #88Whoever comes in , they must have pace, its what we have lacked for too long and a decent sized squad full of it.

Comment #89Huh! does`nt take much to get everyone excited
about nothing.
What exactly is going on that produces such optomism, is it rumor that Shearer will be manager ?
That perhaps FFS will buy the club, none of which in my opinion is a positive, so why the optomistic threads?
If anyone buys this club I hope its someone from the US, why ?
To bring a pragmatic business attitude to a club that has been both the victim of monatory plunder and the worst possible management of any club in the PL.
Dont believe the Paul Allen rumor, but would like to, a techie businessman and a sportslover
combination, aint bad,
Lets see what happens, we may be out of the frying pan and into the fire, so lets not get carried away here.
As for speculation, how can we possibly be associated with any players untill there is the stability and appointments brought about with new ownershipin the naming of a management team, everything else is no more than simply speculation.

Comment #90Some good mentions here; Cox, Driver.
Beckford aint good enough.
And the Inler suggestion is utterly laughable for so many different reasons.
