Part Exchange Deal Possible With Spurs For Seb Bassong

It seems that according to a report in the Evening Chronicle today, Tottenham Hotspur are in the lead in attempts to sign our top center-back Sebastien Bassong.

michael dawson 1

Michael Dawson – part exchange for Bassong?

There are several clubs keen on the 22 year-old, and they include Arsenal, Manchester City and local rivals Sunderland, as well as Spurs and that’s one of the negatives of being relegated  –  it’s hard to hang onto some of your best players.

While he was on duty over the last couple of weeks with the Cameroon squad, Sebastien himself said there were negotiations going on with two Premier league clubs.

But according to people close to Bassong, only Spurs have come forward and expressed a solid interest in the Frenchman.

Harry Redknapp would want to strengthen his central defense for next season, and of course Harry knows a good player when he sees one, and Bassong seems to have a great future in the game.

Harry has two injury-prone center-backs in Ledley King and Jonathan Woodgate, and we’re sure Seb would get lots of games next season. Once he had a run in the side he could well cement his first team place, just like he did at Newcastle last season.

Alan Shearer has urged the Newcastle hierarchy to demand up to £15M for Bassong, so if we do lose him we at least get some funds to bring new good players into the club. But our current hierarchy seem to have been ignoring Shearer and everybody else for that matter, over the last 4 weeks or so, as the club has sunk to its lowest level in years.

Redknapp may yet try to tempt Newcastle into a part-exchange deal involving one or two of  players, and we think Shearer may be interested in 25 year-old Michael Dawson, who Bobby Robson was after when he was 19 and still at Nottingham Forest.

chris gunter 22

Chris Gunter – season-long loan at Newcastle?

That may make it a little easier if we lose Bassong, but whether Dawson would want to take a step down to the Championship is a good question. Of course there is also 19 year -old center-back Chris Gunter, whom Alan may want to sign outright, and in part exchange for Bassong.

Alan may at least be able to get Chris on a season long loan, if Bassong does sign for Spurs.

Some contacts close to the Bassong situation told the Evening Chronicle today:

“We’re waiting to hear back from a couple of other clubs regarding Seb, but Tottenham are definitely keen,”

“It’s still early days, but we do expect things to be resolved quite quickly once teams report back for pre-season.”

We think Alan will want to keep Bassong at Newcastle, but it could well be too late with his mind is probably already made up and likely to join another club for next season, after witnessing the disgraceful mess the club has been in over the last 5 weeks.

Comments welcome.

Spurs are full of players that would be able to do a job in the Championship that aren’t playing like Dos Santos, Bale, Bostock, Hutton, Dawson, and Gunter.

Your exchange idea isn’t too bad Ed.

.com are reporting that the claims about shearer having meeting tomorrow are false!

    hope this isn’t true

    False hopes

Newspaper reports in recent days had led to renewed optimism that the SJP log jam was set to clear and new owners would be announced – along with a permanent managerial appointment.

However we’re now given to understand that talk of an early conclusion to the sale is premature and that the claims of Alan Shearer meeting Ashley etc. are false.

As things stand, pre-season training will begin next Wednesday with Chris Hughton at the helm. And as to who will be deciding which players are present – your guess is as good as ours…

I knew it! The away kit is Ashley’s final ‘Spurs fan’ insult! Go on Wikipedia and check out their strip from 1896-98

    I would want 6m
    Dawson = 4m
    Dos Santos = 4m
    Bostok = Loan

Would be very happy with that deal 🙂

Dawson would never move to Championship. Plus he’s recovering from an ankle injury

Dawson is only good if played alongside a classy CB like Woodgate, King or Bassong so having him in trade would be a bit pointless anyway.

As for Gunter there are other good RBs around. Naughton, Walker, Clyne and Eardley are the best of the upcoming young Brits alongside Gunter.

Besides I don’t want Bassong to go (Who’d ahve guessed that?) especially if the transfer fee guarantees that 2 or 3 of our ‘stars’ can stay on for another season.

We should be looking at putting a big price on his head. Didn’t Shearer say he’d stuck a £15m price tag on Bassong?
£15m would get a lot of good championship replacements

We cannot deal with Spurs and mouth almighty Redknapp. Listen to Shearer and put a price tag on him high enough to put other clubs off. We cannot let that Spurs fan fat Ashley do any more damage to NUFC. The away kit is a sick piss take, the messing around of Shearer is a sick joke, and the running of the club from London is ridiculous. Roll on the day when we disentangle NUFC from these mafioso style London barrow boys and spivs and city bankers. Please let Friday be a salvation day and not another load of horse manure by the press.

We do need some reinforcements. We also need to bring some of our home grown talent through to the first team as well as the promising likes of Kadar, Ferguson, Lua Lua etc etc. If they need to really learn their trade and mature then I think the Coca Cola will not be a bad place to start. We can always go and get Ramage back.

Havent heard anything down this way about bassong. cant see dawson dropping down a division. If harry is interested i can see it being straight cash or maybe rose and gunter loaned out to you.

The massive rumours doing the rounds down here is that owen is a spurs player or will be as soon as his contract ends. not happy about it really.

sunderland are sniffing round bent, keane, hutton and zokora. they could end up with more spurs players than spurs.

The more I think about this ,the more i liken it to “Trading places”, Levey and Ashley take a reasonably succesful (European competitors) entity and put in place events which cause the downfall of that entity, just to see if they can .
They have probably halved the cost to Cashley and taken out one of the most promising well supported football clubs in the world, thus allowing lesser entities the chance to overtake (at least for a short while) but as the saying goes , cream rises to the top eventually and the S*it settles to the bottom.
We need to support even more and not less , Ignore all the crap that`s being spouted and just let things happen that we can`t control.
Expect Cashley to try and sell us to some Nigerians with no money or something to try and take us down even further, but our time will come, when no Geordie ever buys from his shops again, not this shirt or the next, or even the england shirts, he can shove em and wipe his big fat arse with them, and when he`s gone and wer`re on our way back, he will have failed, but made 1 mistake, ………..never f***k with the mags cos we got long memories , and he wont have minders when he`s 90……….what goes around comes around…

alreetpetite, nice to see you. Thought this story may’ve seen your input. I can’t see Dawson wanting to drop down a division either, even though it’d do him good.

I still hope Bassong doesn’t end up at your club though – going by Ed’s webstats you must’ve almost single-handedly turned at least 7 thousand otherwise apathetic NUFC fans ’round into hating your club. Good PR on your part.

….btw, I like WUMs – they’re a real hoot. The best sh1t comes out when you’re under pressure; and everyone loves a bit of drama – especially if it’s backed up by fact and/or wit.

Can’t see Dawson wanting to take the sort of reduced wages we’ll be offering.
But at least giving bassong away to Spurs would probably get Fatley and Llambhuna seats at the top table back at White Hart Lane next season.
” Noice wan, Mike – stiched up them Geordies loike a kippah an’ gets rid of Dawson for Basswass’name.”

    Yeah, nice one Mike…..
