Tommy Wright is a goalkeeper who played for Newcastle, from 1988 through 1993, and he made 73 appearances in that time.
Tommy Wright – former Newcastle goalkeeper
And in September 1999, the great Bobby Robson had him back on Tyneside, as the club had a goalkeeper crisis, and Tommy came back for another three sold games for the Magpies, as Bobby started his miraculous turnaround of the club during that season. That’s exactly what we need to happen next season too.
Tommy, who was capped 31 times for Northern Ireland, will welcome Newcastle to Dublin a week come Saturday, and he talked today about the tragedy of Newcastle’s relegation from the Premier League:
“It’s a total travesty what has happened at Newcastle, I guess that’s an understatement.” “But one thing that will remain is the tremendous support.”
“I had that during my time there.” “We got relegated in 1989, but under Kevin Keegan we fought our way back into the light.”
“Three or four seasons at second-tier level seems unthinkable nowadays.” “But that’s what might have to happen under a steady manager for a while before Newcastle get back up.”
“If you don’t have stability it becomes a vicious circle so I hope they get sorted out quickly because time is marching on.”
And it appears that Wright, who played with Shearer in those three games in 1999, when Robson was starting as manager at the club, has no doubt at all, that Alan is the right man for the manager job at Newcastle.
Wright continued:
“You need somebody with that sort of clout and he’s got that.” “When I played we were in fear of Jim Smith.”
“Teapots would be hurled around the place if things weren’t going right, and you need a bit of that.” “I remember one summer we had a few new signings coming in.”
“They would wonder why we put towels on top of our suits when we were getting changed.” “We just laughed and said ‘you’ll see’.”
“And sure enough when things weren’t going right the teapots would come out.” “And if you didn’t have your towel on top of your suit it would be spoilt!”
Wright seems to be looking forward to the game in Dublin on July 11th, and he thinks it will be a carnival atmosphere in Dublin, when the Toon come to town:
“Having Real Madrid here will be brilliant. “But knowing the Newcastle fans they will come in great numbers and I am really looking forward to it.
“We’ve been homeless as a club for 22 years but now we have the stadium and it’s a great fillip to have teams like Newcastle and Real coming here.”
Newcastle are a famous side, known around the world, and the sooner we get back to the Premier League, the better it will be for everybody concerned.
Any club that can get regular home gates of 52,000 deserves to be in the top division in England, that’s for sure.
But we also know it will not be easy next season, especially with the mess that exists at the club at this moment.
Comments welcome.

Comment #1I seem to remember when Ashley first arrived he declared his wish to ‘have some fun’…… has this been his idea fo fun?
One thing’s for sure, if it is, he’s in a very small minority!

We won’t have a “steady manager” for three or four seasons if we stay in the Championship for that long. The fans will make his life unbearable, so we’ll get another, and another, and so on …

Comment #3lesh, I think the majority were optimistic when he bought the club (including myself) but he imo has probably done the worst job as an owner ever in the history of the EPL.
Sad indeed but hopefully he’ll be gone soon and the travelling fans to Dublin will be able to have a real party and celebration… well fingers crossed.

Comment #12So I finally watched “Goal: The Dream Begins” last night. Fiction or not, it was nice to see Newcastle beat Liverpool and qualify for Europe. Just seems like that’s so far away now.

Comment #16O hurley – I’ve watched that many times now. Great film. Its the only time we will ever beat Liverpool and Chelsea… and in fact probably the only way we can win a match these days is to do it in a film. 🙂
We could really do with Santiago Munez these days!!

Comment #17Jus on the back of what N.U.F.C said:
I know this topic is highly debated but if the season kicks off and there is no change in the current situation then we (the fans) must put aside all in-differences of who is in the dug out and back the team on the pitch.
Its not ideal but its NUFC so do you expect any difference. Im expecting a fair turn out on 15th August – and only hope that all the lads around me renewed (like they said they would) – as the craic was always good.

Comment #22Sick of goons blaming the customer for the quality of the product.
Yes it’s all the fans fault and they are the bane of the club.
So N.U.F.C. and workyticket, you blame yourselves ? (if you are actually fans) or are you special cases and it’s everyone else’s fault?
Find an original name for your “website”?
Sigh.

Comment #28Us punters are ignorant man, those in the know believe Ashley is a good businessman, Hughton and Calderwood are good coaches, Shola is a top striker, Butt is a driving force in midfield and the new strip is a bobby dazzler. They get paid a fortune and we are just loyal mug punters so they must be right?

Comment #30Aside from the total vacuum of official news from Ed’s site I was browsing through the site’s ads and was shocked to discover a male escort agency, I’m apalled that Ed has stooped so low as to be funded by a thinly veiled male prostitution outfit, £500 per day for servicing some old dear or woman that maybe isn’t so hot? it’s degrading and a disgrace…… anyway I’ve signed up and I’ve got my first job on Friday, will keep you all informed as to how I get on.
