Andy Carroll Can Claim First Team Striker Place Next Season

July 1st, 2009 by Ed Harrison · 190 Comments

Former Newcastle midfielder Mick Martin has today lauded Andy Carroll as a player who could make the grade for Newcastle next season in the Championship.

Andy Carroll – can break through next season for sure

In the past it’s been difficult for some of out youngsters to make the full break through to first team status,  but if Shearer does become the permanent manager, he has already promised to put even more emphasis on youth development at the club.

Alan has already said he’s been impressed with what he’s seen of both Andy Carroll and Nile Ranger, as two young England strikers coming through at the club.

Martin told the Chronicle:

“If you look back four or five years ago, the kids had no chance really.” “They couldn’t break their way into the side when the expectancy levels were to qualify for the UEFA Cup at least.”

“Now it is so different, and this is a chance for players like Carroll, LuaLua and Kadar to step forward and stake a claim.”

“In days gone by, you knew that if you didn’t perform or you got injured, the kid in the reserves breathing down your neck could nick your place.”

“That hasn’t been the case in recent times but it can be now.”

And Martin feels that Gateshead-born Geordie lad Andy Carroll,  from the Joseph Swan School, will never get a better opportunity to prove himself than the season coming up, after he played very well more than once last season for the first team.

He seemed to be inspired when playing for the great Alan Shearer, and he looked such a handful for the defenders in the penalty box. In fact Sam Allardyce complained after the Blackburn game that Andy had roughed up his two big central defenders.

Praise indeed from Big Sam. :D

Martin continued:

“I first saw Andy in an FA Youth Cup game a few years back – and he really did impress me.” “I thought he was a good player even then.”

“Even if Newcastle had stayed up he would have been a big player next season.” “But he can really make an impact in the Championship.”

“It’s up to him.” “He has to do the right things and I hope he doesn’t go ‘big time’ on us.”

“There’s a fine line between making the grade and watching your career fall by the wayside, which has happened to so many players who have been in the first team one minute and then bang it’s all gone the next.”

“If his attitude remains right, he can establish himself in these circumstances.” “And I hope he does.”

At the end of the summer we don’t think many of our highly paid players like Martins and Gutierrez will stay at the club, mainly because the club cannot afford their high wages.

Newcastle are now forced to rebuild the squad this summer – and that wouldn’t have been the case, if he had survived in the Premier League, but we think it’s a good thing to rebuild – once we get a manager in of course (picky picky).

Last season the Newcastle first team squad cost £74M, were the 3rd best supported team in the Premier league in terms of average home gates, and they still managed to get the club relegated. And a lot of their performances lacked the guts and spirit expected by the Newcastle faithful.

So it’s best to rebuild, and whether those stars would want to stay is something Mick talked about:

“It’s a question of whether they accept where they are as players.” “They’ve dropped a level below – and if they don’t fancy it they will be in for a short, sharp shock.”

“It’s no good sulking and moaning about playing in this division.” “You need to get on with it.”

“They can make it as hard or as easy as they want on themselves.” “Can they handle it?” “It’s down to character and nothing else.”

Even though players like Martins, Nolan and Barton have said they want to stay on at the club, the first good offer for them will see them moved out, and it’s not a bad idea to rebuild the squad.

We’d like to see Andy Carroll, Nile Ranger, Tamas Kadar, Ben Tozer, Tim Krul and a few of our other up and coming players get their chance this season.

Andy has far appeared 41 times for the club with 14 starts and 4 goals.

Comments welcome.

  • 7 dougnufc // Jul 1, 2009 at 2:14 PM

I have always doubt Carroll, but after the goal West Ham (first goal), he started to look like a real prospect. Every game he played in, he got heavily involved.

Note that he only had 6 starts this season and he netted 3 goals. Really good record for a youngster like Carroll.

I’ll say have him as first choice striker next season and see how he does!

  • 8 punk skunk... // Jul 1, 2009 at 2:21 PM

Can’t see him gettin’ an immediate 1st team start like!..
…He looks alright as a last 20 min sub tho’!..

I’m totally getting a Carroll jersey wants Ashley f***s off

    I beg to differ.

    And why is that Rodzilla?

  • 12 shrews mag // Jul 1, 2009 at 2:34 PM

Like any footballer I think he thrives off confidence … and if it is AS who is manager … and he does give him a few starts and tells him he’s doing well … he could be very big player in the coming season.

Needs someone with pace alongside him though …

  • 13 punk skunk... // Jul 1, 2009 at 2:36 PM

    Mac,
the chances of ALL Toon fans singin’ from the same songsheet is astronomical mate!..

  • 14 punk skunk... // Jul 1, 2009 at 2:37 PM

    I agree shrewsmag,
Carrol MUST be paired with a fast striker, or don’t bother!..

  • 15 Rangerman // Jul 1, 2009 at 2:42 PM

With the right service this lad could be untouchable in the air, he really could be that good now he’s filled out and is using his body strength more.

  • 16 Pons Aelius // Jul 1, 2009 at 2:42 PM

Carroll is an old-fashioned centre forward and a geordie too. I’m sure Shearer will know exactly how to coach and motivate him as they essentially have this in common.

I think he could become a very, very good player if he gets his head down, but I see more of a Dunc Ferguson than an Alan Shearer.

I can see the number 9 on Carrolls back one day if he works hard enough.

  • 17 WELSHMAG // Jul 1, 2009 at 3:01 PM

I think Carroll will play a big part next season, that header he scored end of last season was AMAZING! CLASS! he’d be a handfull in the championship, and hopefully have martins next to him and we’d have an alright looking strike force. Ranger, Ameobie and maybee beckford as back up.

they are all back with their tails between their legs wondering who will still be there in a months time …

new owner … new ideas … new broom … get most of those wasters out of the club (if possible) and let the youngsters with a bit of passion have a go.

Batty – did I touch a nerve you poor little lamb. You’re a sensitive little chap and just way too easy to wind up, you have to resort to school playground name calling. You’ll be telling me your dad’s bigger than mine next !!!!!!!!

Sadly your dangerously low IQ still hasn’t managed to grasp the obvious point being made as you still drone on about Ashley. One day it might dawn on you ( could be a very long time) that we don’t want Ashley, but HELLO we certainly don’t want the buffoon who put us where we are in the first place. It’s not a contest – have you finally got that now?

At the moment people may just think you are an idiot, but if you insist on penning everything you think, you’ll just confirm it. “The eyes are open, the mouth moves, but Mr Brain has long since departed, hasn’t he, Batty?”

You should be grateful to be stalked by someone as good looking as me pet.

    Batty -

Oh dear oh dear, how many expletives can you get in one sentence? I bet your teachers loved you, if you went to school that is. How pathetically predictable and limited you are.
Not exactly a university challenge candidate are you pet? A Michael Jackson look alike – I don’t think so, you would actually have to see me. How old are you ? I imagine you are probably a dad at 17 and a bit of a sad chav. Someone who uses michael Jackson gags he heard off his 12 year old mates – pitiful.

Now I know this is a strange concept for you That’s spelt (CON – SEPT) but this is a forum, a right to reply. That means that just because the majority of us are not as intellectually challenged as you and can manage to articulate a sentence , we get to have a say my friend. I somehow doubt that I am the first person you’ve ever met to not share your views. Now go and think about that and see if you can formulate a cohesive argument without resorting to very unoriginal name calling. Bet you can’t.

Thanks for chiming in Toon factor and I forgot your footballing knowledge is so informed – NOT !!!

  • 87 DJG // Jul 1, 2009 at 7:40 PM

I think Andy Carroll will do well next season. If you look at him he was made for the championship. Big, rough, good header and a bit of a shot on him. If he can stay injury free and really push himself I wouldnt bet against him getting 15+. Xisco and Ranger for strike partners. Plus add one experienced striker and we should be sorted.

So much for ‘all will be revealed on friday’ huh. I bet it will come out of the blue some night trust me. :)

  • 88 magpie6699 // Jul 1, 2009 at 7:46 PM

Breaking news – apparently if the club isn’t sold by tomorrow then it’s unlikely to happen before Friday!
    (anybody guess I’m bored?)

  • 89 ToonTinka // Jul 1, 2009 at 7:48 PM

I think he will do well for us last 20 mins, 45 mins here and there as back up. I just don’t want to put my hope into a bunch of youngings with not alot of experience. Not if where wanting an imediate return to the top flight.

I’d like to see a team built with pace, power and experience with an average age of 24-26.

  • 90 Big Dave // Jul 1, 2009 at 7:52 PM

DJG think your right about carroll. i would like us to try to keep oba plus if we go up it saves us millions on not haveing to go out and get a striker for the epl

  • 91 sirjasontoon // Jul 1, 2009 at 7:58 PM

Agree with ToonTinka…the Championship can be a rough place and a team of kids would be out muscled by most teams.

I think they all deserve a chance but we need some seniority and older heads with a mix of youthful enthusiasm and hunger.

See the wasters where back in training today…Losers.

  • 92 sirjasontoon // Jul 1, 2009 at 8:00 PM

Oba will be off to a Big Club like Hull or Stoke or Birmingham City. :)

  • 93 Big Dave // Jul 1, 2009 at 8:02 PM

SJT it would be funny if Mo ended up at one off them clubs and we were to pass him on our way up next year sweet lol

  • 94 ToonTinka // Jul 1, 2009 at 8:10 PM

Benzema looking to be off to Real for 30 mil, just been on sss. If it goes through that is 180 mil in 22 days lol.

I’v just been looking at the toon in training pictures, Butt looks a sight for sore eyes. Barton looks in good spirits, I guess you would be though on 60 grand a week and no sign of the boss you had a falling out with.

I’d like to see Oba be away, I don’t rate the lad at all. Had some cracking games for us but to inconsistent for my liking, as our most of our players at present. Nice clean slate will do me with the exception of Beye, Taylor, and Bassong if salvagable

I tried going to the nufc blog homepage and select an article from there but I was still getting the mobile site. It’s weird because the RSS feed dosn’t seem to work from my mobile, I think it’s a problem with the actual RSS feed.

I also tried Tino’s approach clicking on show original site at the bottom of the page, this eventually worked after around 5 times of trying.

I’m amazed when fans don’t rate Martins. If I were Shearer he is the first player I’d talk into staying. It would especially idiotic to sell for, say, 5M to a team like Stoke. It would mean that Stoke are likely to stay up and thrive whilst we could struggle.

Carroll, Ranger, Martins, Xisco and..maybe Amoebi would do just fine. Better still, even sell Shola and buy Frasier Campbell to make up that 5 if there’s enough wonga.

Yes, it’d be great to see Carroll, Kadar, Lua Lua, Inman etc etc coming on a lot next season though no one can be optimistic til new owners arrive.

  • 137 Sav // Jul 2, 2009 at 3:23 AM

I’m disgusted by this guff in the Northern Echo by a Shepherd crone, Will Smith. It is the most ignorant, unrepresentative and blatantly biased piece of crap I’ve ever read in a newspaper….

” Well it’s about time the flaky retail entrepreneur took his wares somewhere else and allowed the man from a solid scrap metal background on the banks of the Tyne by accepting the alleged £60m offer.

Shepherd’s return, with former sparing partner Douglas Hall, Hall’s sister and his former directors, would only serve to galvanise the Geordie Nation and take it forward.

Of course Shepherd made mistakes during his ten years in charge on Tyneside. Calling United legend Alan Shearer, Mary Poppins, and becoming embroiled in the News of the World Toongate scandal when he bragged about ripping off supporters with replica jerseys, was embarrassing for the club. But he was set up after all.

But he was worth every penny of the reported £500,000 and £750,000 he paid himself a year in wages – and indeed deserved the £34 million pay off from Ashley in the sell off – as he worked his socks off for the club.

He could justify his and his colleagues exuberant wages because they were Geordies and they cared for the club. The same could not be said about the Cockney Mafia of Ashley, Dennis Wise and Derek Llambias.

Surely it is time for Newcastle supporters to unite and back a Shepherd to return to the club? Better the devil you know – eh?”

Well no, actually. We know both these scumbags, Ashley and Shepherd and being forced to choose between them is like being asked ‘do you want your eyeballs gouged, or your nuts steam-cleaned.

  • 138 Sav // Jul 2, 2009 at 3:51 AM

Georgie gallows humour is being stretched to breaking point with the club in limbo the way it is.

    Here’s 2 definitions of Limbo:-

    1. A state of not knowing the result or next stage of something and being powerless to influence it.
    2. A dance of West Indian origin in which the practitioners bend over backwards until they cannot get any lower.

    Take your pick.

We need to calm down. Shepherd will not be buying NUFC.

He hasn’t got the money to buy the club and invest in the club. He knows that too.

Seymour Pierce will recommend the best buyer to Ashley and Harris is looking at who can invest in the club as well as buy it. That is not Shepherd!

We will be sold to overseas people.

  • 170 Stuart79 // Jul 2, 2009 at 9:36 AM

    SirJason

We know the facts. The facts are that Keith Harris is renowned for his integrity and proffesionalism.

He has said that he will recommend the best buyer for the club and in his own words ‘it has to be someone who can buy the club and someone who has the money to invest thereafter’

That rules out FFS. He has said himself it’s a billionaires game now, and he won’t risk losing all his own money would he? I mean he never spent any of his own money before!

  • 171 Toon_Factor // Jul 2, 2009 at 9:37 AM

    Stuart79

No certainly not, im sure he would of got a lot more with decent players though, and how many assists did everyone else get? Jonas, Geremi and Ameobi had 4 assists each and that was our highest. Geremi was the only creative player we had and managers chose to snub him!

  • 172 Solaidback // Jul 2, 2009 at 9:42 AM

I personally think we should get rid of all our current 1st team strikers, ie Smith, Ameobi, Martins as they couldn’t hit a barn door at 10 paces & didn’t nowt to help us stay up in the PL, that way it will make space for our younger, more interested strikers, like Carroll, Ranger, Lua Lua & then we can bring in another 1 or 2 to back them up, that would give us a young, ambitious, hungry strike force to scare the crap out of any fizzy pop team :)

  • 173 Waddles mullet // Jul 2, 2009 at 9:43 AM

  • 174 Stuart79 // Jul 2, 2009 at 9:43 AM

The fact that Geremi and Ameobi both got as many assists as Jonas show’s how bad Jonas has been.

He’s spent more minutes on the pitch than the rest.

He runs up and down all day and that blinkers fans opinions on him.

If we can get any money for him he has to go. Yet another complete and utter waste of money!

Stuart, Keith Harris may have integrity – I don’t know him but happy to give anyone the benefit of doubt. But lets not kid ourselves, his integrity requires heprotects the identities of bidders and he gets the best price for Mike Ashley.

    That’s it.

Whether investors plan to invest in the future is no business of Seymour-Pierce’s and whether future investors plan to turn it into a supermarket or take a profit out of every transfer window until there’s nowt left he can do absolutely nothing about. Harris’ football background is about contacts. He’s not here as a guardian of football clubs or fans’ aspirations.

If someone shows Harris they only have £100m and someone else shows him they have £1b I think it’s obvious he will recommend the guy with the deepest pockets.

Whatever we think of Ashley he will want to sell it to someone who can take the club forward. Shepherd cannot do that

  • 190 ian // Jul 2, 2009 at 3:03 PM

It would be a miracle if Carroll or any other bought striker from the championship came to the club and scored enough goals to get us straight back up, Oba is the one to get us back up he will score from day one, if Carroll or another can find form alongside him then we may get straight back up, if they cant we may struggle even with Obas goals, it isnt as easy as people may think to win the championship.

Our midfield and wingers were bad before they will be no better in the championship unless the midfield and wingers sell and we get some good championship ones.

Carroll was hopeless at Norwich and has not been prolific in the premiership, Ameboi may be better than him, Nile Ranger could be the one if he is as good as peeple say he is, but they all need a coll experienced player such as Oba to play off.
