Carver Ready To Join Shearer Back-Room Staff – Hopefully

July 2nd, 2009 by Ed Harrison · 232 Comments

44 year-old John Carver had been tipped to join Alan Shearer’s backroom staff if Alan does get the Newcastle manager job, although nobody else has even been mentioned as a possible management candidate.

82738086MS004_TORONTO_FC_V_

John Carver – ready to help Alan at Newcastle?

And John, was was born in Newcastle, did a great job as Assistant manager to Sir Bobby Robson,. during Bobby’s magic spell at the club from 19099 until 2004, and John is an excellent coach in his own right, having just finished  his time as the Toronto FC manager.

When Bobby was first appointed he tried to get his old assistant from Barcelona, a certain Jose Mourinho, but Jose was looking for a a manager opportunity somewhere at that time. Jose continues to say he learned everything he knows about management from Sir Bobby, while they were at Barcelona.

Carver told the Evening Chronicle today:

“When Sir Bobby first came in the club was only going in one direction.” “Everybody was on a low back then – the fans, players and staff.”

“But his presence seemed to lift everybody straight away, it was incredible really.” “We went from losing to Sunderland in the derby to playing Chelsea away, and in his first game the dressing room was a different place.”

“The players were up for it and we lost very narrowly to a good Chelsea team at Stamford Bridge 1-0.” “Then in his first home game we managed to stick eight past Sheff Wed.”

“So it just shows what can be achieved when the right sort of presence comes into a dressing room that is on a low.”  “I think that is what is needed at the club at the moment because there are similarities to be drawn.”

Bobby quickly established new spirit and passion at the club after the woeful spell at St. James’ Park of Ruud Gullit, and one thing he did was force them to eat lunch together, so as  to forge a better team spirit.

And that’s what Alan did when he took over, for his 8 week spell on April 1st.

Robson at the time said it was his biggest challenge in management, and in that first season he did a magnificent job, but the next season we had injures and didn’t seem to progress too much, but then we were 4th top the following year.  In the two following seasons we were 3rd and 5th before Bobby left in September of 2004.

And yes he was sacked by Freddy Shepherd.

Carver continued:

“First and foremost, Sir Bobby made sure everybody was reading off the same page. We became a team again, and started fighting for one another again.”

“Everybody was fighting for the person next to them.” “But that all came from discipline.” “One of the most important things we did was that everybody had to eat together after training and before games.”

“Suddenly there was a unity again.” “We had a lot of foreign players at the club at the time such as Temuri Ketsbaia, Nikos Dabizas and Silvio Maric.” “We went from being individuals to a team because they had to now talk to each other during meals – it built up a sense of unity and created a synergy.”

“It was very much a team bonding session between the players which spilled out on to the pitch and was backed up by results.”

“Sir Bob wasn’t afraid to get his hands dirty.” “He was out on the training field with the players.” “If he had to make a point, he’d make it there and then, there could be no complaints.”

“The other thing he also had was time.” “There can be no quick fixes in football.” “In his first season he stabilised the team in the Premier League and the second year we finished mid-table.”

“He was allowed to offload players and get the team he wanted.” “There was a lot of progress made during that time and he produced a team the fans could be proud of.”

John left the manager job recently at Toronto, and some thought may have been to position himself to be ready to help Alan Shearer at Newcastle.

We hope John will become part of the backroom staff at Newcastle, under Shearer, as John is not only an excellent coach, but he knows all about the Newcastle club and what makes it tick.

Comments welcome.

Just the sort of bloke we need on board. Hope Alan gets the job and brings him in asap. I have more trust and respect for Carver’s toe nail clippings than I have in that malignant beach bum Ashley.

  • 3 Robby Bobson // Jul 2, 2009 at 3:25 PM

Much better than Colin Calderwood and spent many years learning from the great man himself Sir Bobby and knows that the club is about.

Quite a while ago my old man met an ex footballer who claimed to be close to Carver and said that he had told him he was gona join under Shearer. Dont know if the bloke was making it up as it had been in the paper the previous week.

12.11 Speculation continues to link Aston Villa with Wigan defender Titus Bramble. The latest reports suggest Barry Bannan could be used as a makeweight in any deal.

oh my… i thought oneil had an eye for players

Would definately be a positive move for NUFC imo.

Lets hope we can start moving soon….. please sell up sooner rather than later.

Fergie must be in the early stages of dementia if he thinks “signing” Owen is a good idea…

Look what the Manure fans think:

ED…….I HAVE PREVIOUSLY POSTED ON SOMETHING WHICH YOU HAVE ABSOLUTELY WRONG IN THIS ARTICLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ROBSON WAS NOT SACKED BY SHEPARD!!!

This is the last time i will say this. It was the board of driectors; namely the Halls who called time on bobby’s managerial career at newcastle. As the public face of the newcastle united board it was left to shepard to do the boards dirty work!

    This is absolute FACT!

It was shepard who convinced the newcastle united board to bring in sir bobby against their wishes at the time!

BOBBY AND SHEPARD REMAIN FREINDS TO THIS VERY DAY!

FACT! PLEASE RUN AN ARTICLE ON THIS SO PEOPLE CAN UNDERSTAND WHAT ACTUALLY WENT ON!

  • 11 RyanToon // Jul 2, 2009 at 4:09 PM

    chill winston ;)

  • 12 Kevin Nichol // Jul 2, 2009 at 4:11 PM

Sir bobby is a hero of mine. I do not hold shepard in any particlar esteem; however i would take shepard back as chairman in a heartbeat over the current regime.

Hopefully lesson’s will have been learned.

hope carver does come back, he did a gr8 job last time he was here and if shearer does get the job then carver and dowie are gonna prove invaluable to him. dowie hughton carver money shearer and a few other coaches are going to be a fantastic bunch for the toon. who would every1 like as coachers next season?

  • 15 Elfy_Toon // Jul 2, 2009 at 4:29 PM

nufc2009, i wouldnt mind him coming in for a season or two, not starting every game but starting a gd few and helpin develop some of the youngster would b a gd idea. specially dropping down a league could help prolong his career by another year or two

  • 16 magforlife // Jul 2, 2009 at 4:56 PM

Anyone else sick and tired of Hughton and the playing staff moaning on about off field events and blaming this on their form and attitude, its so easy for them to use this an excuse and they would be better off apologizing for last season.

  • 17 Rangerman // Jul 2, 2009 at 4:59 PM

Kevin Nichol – You don’t seem to have any understanding how a public limited company works, it was a board decision but there were just as many Shepherd’s on the board than there were Hall’s.

Have you got anything to back up your claim that nobody wanted Robson apart from Shepherd?

Read Sir Bobby’s autobiography to see what Shepherd was like during negotiations, SJH done the talking and Shepherd just kept saying we couldn’t be saved.

  • 18 Rangerman // Jul 2, 2009 at 5:21 PM

Here’s a quote from Sir Bobby’s book, Kevin Nichol.

‘In our meeting, the board did admit that they had no war chest to hand over for team rebuilding. There had been money once, they said, but it was all gone now, spent by Kenny Dalglish and Ruud Gullit, the two previous managers. I recall very clearly Freddy Shepherd saying, “You’ve got a difficult job keeping us up, and I don’t think you can do it. I think we’re going down” He kept saying “I don’t think you can do it.” I don’t think he was trying to goad or challenge me. He honestly believed the team was in freefall and could not be saved from calamity’

Now that doesn’t sound to me like the words of someone that had to convince the rest of the board that Robson was the man to take us forward.

It was Freddie Fletcher that brought in Keegan, Dalglish, Gullit and Robson btw and the club hasn’t been the same since he stopped running the football side of the club.

  • 19 Big Dave // Jul 2, 2009 at 5:33 PM

Rangerman what does that quote prove and ” It was Freddie Fletcher that brought in Keegan, Dalglish, Gullit and Robson btw and the club hasn’t been the same since he stopped running the football side of the club. So does that mean that we should all blame fletch

Hot from “Look North” – Lamearse has shown a Malaysian consortium around SJP.
This is true – just come from box to share.
(Probably turn out to be plans to franchise a Chinese takeaway at SJP – but who knows)

It’s probably a commercial obligation that they agreed to months ago.

  • 40 jettson1971 // Jul 2, 2009 at 7:30 PM

if its a Malaysian consortium wanting to buy in then commercially thats massive as football in the far east is enormous! do we have any ideas as to the identities of the group shown round? any ideas who in Malaysia may have the pennies to purchase and for transfers etc?

  • 41 Toon_Factor // Jul 2, 2009 at 7:30 PM

Owen has opened talks with Man Untied according to Sky Sports News

  • 42 magpie6699 // Jul 2, 2009 at 7:33 PM

Stuart79 – I guess that might be it. Hard to believe it’s anything to do with selling – otherwise why wouldn’t they announce it first before they show them round? And if it’s prospective buyers – surely they would have shown them a CD or some other electronic presentation.

  • 43 Tom Mo. // Jul 2, 2009 at 7:36 PM

“otherwise why wouldn’t they announce it first before they show them round? ”

    Did anyone actually see it?

  • 48 dougnufc // Jul 2, 2009 at 8:00 PM

    “Malaysians in Toon

BBC Radio Newcastle report that Managing Director, Derek Llambias, was showing representatives of a Malaysian bidder round Newcastle today.

This is a new prospective buyer, so far unmentioned in press reports, and no more is known about the consortium behind the bid.

More on this as we get it.”

    Report from nufc.com

Evening all, what was on SSN Rodzilla mate?

Aint been on the blog in a while, i’ve really had enough regarding the sale of the club and the way things are run. Even our very own Steven Taylor, almost a home grown geordie lad who’s announced he wants to stay may leave. Our player of the season last year and Deffinate option for captain Habib Beye who’s already announced he’s staying may be forced to leave.

i have so much respect for those to because quite frankly they were the only 1’s with the exception of a few others who gave a toss about the club and even after announcing they want to stay and help a club that they give their all to and that others got relegated. Even that they can stand up and say they’re proud to wear the shirt yet i bet a £5 million would be accepted for both of them. But most of all, the fact that they have the courage to model that joke of an away shirt that resembles Newcastle’s season perfectly last season, A JOKE!

I stand up now and i hope others will join me in saying if the club will not support the team, then why should we support them?

and i’ll tell you why because like the very few players that gave a toss about the club last season WE’RE GEORDIES FROM FAR AND WIDE, HOMEGROWN OR NOT AND WE’RE PROUD!!

Now i could really do with a glass of coke right now, (it would be a pint or 2) but i dont drink.

  • 146 Ross // Jul 2, 2009 at 11:03 PM

Jonas was anything but sh!te. You only have to look at the good games he had (man u-the opening day of the season) to realise he certainly wasnt a poor player. His work rate was second to none, he’d run his b@lll@cks off down the flank, could certainly tackle, and yes, he could beat a man purely down to his strength on the ball. You only had to watch him to see that he was good with the ball at his feet. I agree with people that say his final delivery was poor, and yes it was frustrating-as was his poor shooting. Performances may have deteriorated-can you blame him? him first season in England with a team that was nothing short, of absolutly useless.
I wont be surprised to see him move on to elsewhere in the premier league and do just fine for himself if im honest.

  • 147 tom tomb // Jul 2, 2009 at 11:03 PM

  • 155 Ross // Jul 2, 2009 at 11:15 PM

tom tomb-my guess would be due to his dip in form, like i stated in my previous post. He always worked hard though. MOTD said he was one of the most impressive premier league debut’s they’d seen from a foreigner im sure. I remember the mackems away also-he came on along with barton at around the 70 minute mark i think it was, and both had a positive impact almost immediatly. He tracks back and helps out in defence, and is a good outlet going forward on the counter attack, he’s a strong lad. Like i’ve already said, i was just as frustrated as everyone else regarding his lack of final product, but i think he’s taking alot of flack when in reality, he didnt do THAT badly. Like i said, his first season in England and the state of our club, he must have been wondering what he’d managed to get himself into half the time.

  • 156 tom tomb // Jul 2, 2009 at 11:20 PM

Yeah Ross agree with a lot of that there were a lot worse than JG but I do not get people trying to make him out to be a hero (not yourself). By god you really are thick! Ill say it very clearly so you will understand. When a player like Jonas gets hacked down a lot usually because they are very tricky, he tends to win a lot of free kicks- you still with me?, If we had a decent free kick taker who has the ability to whip in a good cross or who could score a goal, he would be useful because he will create more goal scoring opportunities because of the free kicks he wins, this means there is more chance of us scoring. Understand little girl!

  • 163 Doocey // Jul 2, 2009 at 11:36 PM

Sorry I’m with TF on this one.
Gutierrez is a good player. A tricky winger that puts in 100% and didn’t flop in first season of English Football. He even managed to somewhat shine in a lackluster ‘not so bothered’ Newcastle United team.
Jonas has played for Argentina and has a few caps now. He’s highly regarded in Argentina and mind you Mallorca rekected a £12m bid for him from Portsmouth when Harry was in charge. Redknapp knows his players for example, look what he did with Glen Johnson etc.

My point being, Gutierrez is not shit, far from it and he’ll, as I’ve said already, turn out quite an asset should he decide or be forced to move on from St.James’ Park

  • 164 Ross // Jul 2, 2009 at 11:36 PM

obviously im in the same boat RE Bassong and i’ll be gutted shall we lose him, seems inevitable though. Im a big fan of Beye, seems to give 100% as did Enrique-however he was at times suspect also. I’ve always stood behind him however, he’s still learning his trade and i think he will grow up to be a good defender. He said himself he was an attacking fullback and i thought he got forward well when linking up with Jonas. I was however frustrated with the majority of the team, the majority of the time last season. Onwards and upwards from now on in though. (im hoping i can use the term literally there, however current affairs would beg to differ with regards to the “upwards” aspect). Even then, we’re moving onwards at an alarmingly slow pace. I know the takeover takes time but end of the day we’ve been dragged through a hedge backwards supporting the toon for years now, all we want is a bit of good news! lets hope it comes sooner rather than later.

    1) 2 good games all seasons i.e. Manure away & Stoke at home.
    2) Good work rate.
    3) Runs up blind alleys.
    4) Poor passer.
    5) Could not score in a brothel.
    6) Constantly flaters to deceive.
My synopsis, a decent pro but not not enough flair/guile.

On the J G topic, I’d say he performed pretty average this season.. If you asked him I reckon he would say he had a poor season. Never really got going, but in a side like our’s it was always going to be a struggle for him.

I love his tracking back, but I think overall an average player in a poor side. Put him in another team next season in the Premiership and I reckon you will see the best out of him now he is used to our game

He’s an ok player like, but he had some bad performances like all of them last season. I don’t know about keeping him for the championship, not that he would stay anyway, I doubt.

I would like to see a total revamp of the midfield, two very quick wingers, with a playmaker in the middle with pace who can bang them in, maybe a hard man in there aswell who dosn’t take no shat!

Build it all around Taylor and Beye at the back if Bassong is off

I just don’t trust Barton or Nolan anymore from last season, fair enough He wern’t here for long Nolan, but I didn’t see any quality from him at all when he played. I think the younger lads in the Championship would run him ragged, every team and player is going to raise their game against us next season, I don’t think he can raise his.

i get every1s arguements against nolan and barton but are we going to get ne1 else to fill the gap if they leave? i cant think of many players willing to come to us who could provide the same quality as barton or the battling prowess nolan has at times. if shearer could get barton str8 on the pitch (and is there ne1 better to do that?) then i think he could b a very valuable player to us for yrs to come.

  • 201 stk85 // Jul 3, 2009 at 12:57 AM

that video of darius vassell being greeted in turkeys hilarious! makes you wonder why the hell players chose to warm benches and never play etc. well we dont wonder, we know.

as for owen. dunno what to think. part of me hates that his career could continue after the contempt he treated newcastle with. part of me wishes him the best and hopes he reaches 100 caps and becomes all time england goal scorer. just to rub salt into the gaping wound of how piss poor we’ve been as a club since 2004.

if its malays or americans that take us over, as long as they stay out of it and let shearer get on with it, we’ll be fine. no shepherd, geordie nation, chancer, nonsence. as long as the two beached whales of the south and north east stay away, i’m happy.

I just want to forget the both of them Elfy, sack em and start a fresh.

Im hoping Shearer gets the job, he knows enough people in the game to get us two quality Mids to replace them..

Thats the best thing of having Shearer in charge for me mate.. His attraction and who he knows in the game.

He will sort it right out.

Right im off to kip, 8 start for me.

    Catch ya’s tommorow lads.

  • 205 magforlife // Jul 3, 2009 at 7:30 AM

Michael Owen is having a medical at Man U this morning it says on SSN, is that the biggest reward for failure ever or what? Never thought they would be so desperate for a signing, reminds me of Kluivert, once a great player but never again, just shows that we mere mortals no sweet fa about football, Liverpool fans will be going apeshit

  • 206 belfast toon // Jul 3, 2009 at 7:37 AM

Not that MO deserves any more inches on the blog but only he can come out of SJP melling of roses!

I cant see him starting over Berbatov & Rooney. Impact sub – possibly (ala tevez).

Just watch his form improve – that will do only one thing – prove he was only at SJP for cash. Bet he wont walk around with a face looking like a slapped arse and manure!!!!

I am curious as to Fergies thinking and how the manure fans will react – the ones I know all divnt want him.

Anyway I feel better now I got that off me tits.

  • 211 sahota // Jul 3, 2009 at 9:00 AM

I just hope we are taken our by this consortia from Malaysia, they are better owners than ones from Arab. They might not spend like mads like Arabs are doing, but Malaysians are generally good business people and care for their customers and employees a lot. Also Football is picking up in those areas and already lot of passion there. I think they will also cash on that.

  • 212 RyanToon // Jul 3, 2009 at 9:04 AM

  • 213 RyanToon // Jul 3, 2009 at 9:08 AM

david craig in sky said a group in central europe are interested! wealthy person in the entertainment industry

  • 214 sahota // Jul 3, 2009 at 9:08 AM

@Ryan I think he will score many goals there…what are your thoughts. I think we were not able to support him. With good guys behind him, and he getting supply in D, I bet he can still score a goal for every 2 games atleast.

  • 215 RyanToon // Jul 3, 2009 at 9:12 AM

    sahota

id say owen will play roughly 20 games for man utd altogether, and score around 7 or 8 goals

  • 216 RyanToon // Jul 3, 2009 at 9:13 AM

    Austria
    Czech Republic
    Germany
    Hungary

    thats what cover central europe

wonder where the bidders from? switzerland?

  • 217 RyanToon // Jul 3, 2009 at 9:17 AM

07.34 More then one of the tabloids are claiming that Sol Campbell is considering a summer move to Newcastle. Given that the Portsmouth defender told Sky Sports News on Thursday that every club needs stability, his suggested switch to the North East seems a little far-fetched given the Magpies’ current predicament.

  • 218 newcastle29 // Jul 3, 2009 at 9:19 AM

    ryan.

three parties interested, first one to sign gets the club.

    1. eastern/ asian.
    2. europe
    3. american

  • 219 RyanToon // Jul 3, 2009 at 9:21 AM

    Malaysians in Toon

BBC Radio Newcastle report that Managing Director, Derek Llambias, was showing representatives of a Malaysian bidder round Newcastle on Thursday.

Businessman Ananda Krishnan is thought to be the man behind the bid.

  • 222 batty // Jul 3, 2009 at 9:25 AM

shearer suppose to want sol cambell and cambell reported to have brought a propitey in newcastle

  • 223 sahota // Jul 3, 2009 at 9:32 AM

Guys, this episode should be over now soon. Everyone is tired of new rumor everyday. Who ever owns us, I just want them to run us professionally and employ some football minds at key posts at club. Get Shearer in and fans should give him enough time and should not expect promotion this season itself. If it happens, its great, otherwise set your expectations LOW and assume we will not be promoted this season. And give everyone a space to breath. I believe realistically we should be back in PL in 2 seasons , I think thats realistic target. This season we should target to get ourselves into playoffs and just rely on our luck to get us in PL, or otherwise get automatic promotion place season after this.

We now need to be patient after new owner comes in. Only thing we should expect from everyone is DIRECTION and a target. We all should move in one direction together. And one day we will be in Top 6 of PL.

  • 224 Toon Graeme // Jul 3, 2009 at 9:34 AM

Ryan – I think MO will discover form and will get the supply he needs. If he does its a bit like a kick in the nuts from an ex.

As for the fact a consortium was shown around. Its a hell of a long way to travel NOT to bid etc so there must be somit in it.

How true are these reports though? As you can see Ive turned into a right cynical get.

  • 225 newcastle29 // Jul 3, 2009 at 9:34 AM

    ryan.

i put a reply in that other thread.

off to work now, hopfully something will be signed by the time i get back, happy days.

  • 227 RyanToon // Jul 3, 2009 at 9:38 AM

what makes me laugh, all of a sudden OWENS the best thing sinced sliced bread according to the media and man utd fans (who were constantly slating him the last 4 years)

    pathetic if you ask me!

  • 228 Nick 69 // Jul 3, 2009 at 9:53 AM

sol campbells lass is from northumberland and they hav just bought a house up there so it woudlt suprise me if he fancies a move to the toon if we sort ourselves out soon. would be a good signing for free in the ccc

  • 229 sirjasontoon // Jul 3, 2009 at 9:58 AM

Owen as a sub would work as Man U create openings for strikers to score…we unfortunately don’t,he would also have less chance of being injured as a bit part player.

I have no time for Owen anyway so don’t care where he ends up.

  • 230 RyanToon // Jul 3, 2009 at 9:59 AM

steven taylor and sol cambpell at the back would be good! taylor can learn even more about defending ;)

  • 231 chuck // Jul 3, 2009 at 8:50 PM

Think most of the people on thus blog which includes Ed. have it wrong.
I would much rather see John Carver get the managers job than Shearer.
Most think of Shearer with Carver as his trainer or assistant, truth is Carver is the more expierienced and knowledgeable of the two.
It may be that Shearer could learn from being Carvers assistant and as far as Shearer doing anything spectacular as manager during the last eight games I would like to know what it was ?
Face it he lost six out of eight and showed what a rookie he was by poor team choices plus a decided lack of any tactical nous.
Were I the incoming owner I would look for a combination of Steve Clark with Carver in the coaching role.
But that would be too much like common sense, why would we want people who know how to do the job when we have a ready made messiah just waiting to lead the club to the promised land.
When will you all get it ?

  • 232 batty // Jul 3, 2009 at 10:32 PM

chuck get it right he lost 5 out of 8
