Hughton Being Positive As Possible With Newcastle Mess

July 2nd, 2009 by Ed Harrison · 15 Comments

Managing Director Derek Llambias was today scheduled for a flying visit to Newcastle from London.

Derek Llambias - disastrous 12 month tenure at Newcastle for this man

Derek has been Mike Ashley’s right hand man in the shambles that has gone on at the club since the club were disastrously relegated just 5 weeks ago, and the sooner Mike and Derek leave the club, the better for all concerned.

They admitted they had no experience of running a football club when they came on board, and they have continued to prove that fact in the two years they have been here, and especially over the last 10 months or so.

To say they’ve been hopeless is a massive understatement, as even now they look to be seriously damaging the club’s preparations for next season.

And they have once again handed over the mess on the playing side to poor Chris Hughton to do something with, and Chris as usual, is trying to put as positive a spin on the situation as he can. What else can the man do?

Chris talked about yesterday’s training session:

“The day went well and there was no difference, in many ways, to any other pre-season.” “There’s a job to be done, and the mood was good.”

“I was pleased.” “Whatever the situation, at this club or any other club, one thing that doesn’t change is that the players quite look forward to the first day.”

“The first day’s always a good day, and that was the case yesterday.” “The players haven’t seen each other for quite some time, and the mood was upbeat.”

“They wanted to get to work. They’re professional enough not to let what’s happening outside affect them.” “The focus is on getting fit, and they have looked after themselves very well in the summer.”

“A lot of them have been doing fitness programmes in the summer, and they coped very well.”

The players hopefully will put a brave face on the situation, as a lot of them know they will not be on Tyneside come September.

But Chris and the coaching staff have to press on and get the job done, because at least the lads need to get super fit, so we will not be short of fitness in our game at the start of the season.

The 5 pre-season friendlies will help with that but the big job is to sell our expensive players and bring in new players that will form the basis of the squad for next season, and none of that has happened yet and there’s just 5 weeks come Saturday until the first game.

There’s not much Newcastle fans can do right now, although their is significant concern and anxiety building on Tyneside, as time goes by, and there’s still lots and lots of work to be done to prepare the club for next season.

Comments welcome.

Ed I think we will arrive at west brom the most unprepared team in the division..clubs are already building their teams we have yet to discard all the losers, get an owner and appoint a manager etc.

I’m actually looking forward to the new season in a very bizarre way. I’ve never gone into a season with absolutely no idea:

    a) Who our owner is going to be
    b) Who our manager is going to be
    c) Who is going to be playing for us
    d) Where we are going to finish in the league

Usually by now we would have been talking about what type of players would be coming or going and would have had an idea of where we were going to finish but now I’m totally lost!

As frustrating as it is not knowing anything right now, when the new owner (whoever they may be) finally appoints a manager it’s just going to be a case of us sitting there and hoping everything turns out all right. It’s going to be an edge-of-the-seat job from the 1st match!

    The toon circus rolls on…
