Is Alan Shearer After Sol Campbell For Newcastle?

July 3rd, 2009 by Ed Harrison · 67 Comments

There is a report in the Daily Star today that Sol Campbell, currently out of contract with Portsmouth, is set to join Newcastle United.

sol campbell 2

Sol Campbell – are Newcastle after him again?

Every time Sol has been available over the last three years it seems like Newcastle have been linked with him, so we don’t know if there’s any truth at all in this story, and probably not.

But it seems that Campbell is ready to leave Fratton Park, having seen a number of the club’s best players leave, and because of the takeover chaos surrounding the club.  Boy, doesn’t that sounds familiar?

And the Star is even saying that Campbell and his Geordie partner Fiona Barratt have already bought a home in the North East.

But until the Newcastle situation settles down, then Campbell would be going from the frying pan into the fire at Newcastle.

However, if a good new owner comes in within the week, and Alan is given the reigns at Newcastle, then Sol could be given a good challenge to help the club get back to the Premier League, and Newcastle would make it worth his while. Sol would still be a very good player in the Championship, that’s for sure.

But Sol will be 35 in September, so the maximum he can probably play is for a couple of seasons, but he could be more than useful at Newcastle, not just for his playing ability, but for his vast experience to help our young players like Steven Taylor and Tamas Kadar come through.

It is also said that the prospect of linking up with Alan Shearer, who is expected to be named full-time manager as soon as the Newcastle club is sold, is a big draw to the former England international, who of course regularly played with Alan for the England side.

Campbell recently told the Star:

“I’m out of contract and will listen to different offers.” “There are a few options. I want to make the right choice. Portsmouth have to organise themselves and there’s a lot happening.”

“At the moment there, it seems a lot of things are happening in the background.” “It may resolve itself, I don’t know. But as a ¬player I want to be in the right environment for at least the next two years. I need the right environment to be successful.”

“You want a good chairman and a great manager – it doesn’t matter if he is coming into the game or is vastly experienced. You want stability.” “I’m aware of interest in me and it’s nice to know.”

“I’m sure people come back from their holidays and have a week or two and start to see what they’ve got and hopefully deals can start moving.”

It’s interesting that he says you need a great manager and it doens’t matter if he’s just coming into the game – a reference perhaps to Alan Shearer at Newcastle. It certainly seems that Alan impressed everybody he played with during his career, and most in the game think he is destined to become a great manager. We certainly hope so. :D

Sol will not find any stability right now at Newcastle, but that’s job number one for the new owner and Alan when they take over the club, and Sol could help with that too.

If  indeed Alan signs Campbell we would welcome the move, because it adds some experience, class and experience to the Newcastle squad, and even at 35, Sol is still some player, especially in the Championship.

Comments welcome.

ED make sure you tell your son neil to be up bright and early to get the posts out lol

  • 2 gotcoffee // Jul 3, 2009 at 10:54 AM

He’d command a high wage for a CCC player .. which is the model we’re trying to avoid at the moment .. other reports suggest several Prem clubs are also looking at him .. so I would suspect our chances are slim.

Would be a reasonable buy though of the terms were right .. (should have had him 3 years ago though)

  • 3 Ed Harrison // Jul 3, 2009 at 10:56 AM

    Batty – right!!

  • 4 monkeymagic // Jul 3, 2009 at 10:58 AM

Suppose he’d be an ok signing, cant realy see us getting too much from him apart from his leadership quality and a bit of experience next to Taylor which he is in desperate need of, doubtful he’l be able to cause Campbell the problems hes caused others next to him.

Theres no way in hell hes gonna be a regular at his age playing 3 games in 8 days.

  • 5 LoonyToony // Jul 3, 2009 at 11:00 AM

Good blog there ED and defintaly some good reading.

I for one would love to see campbell in a Toon kit next season as he would be a great player to have in the championship. Infact he would be just the sort of player you need to get back up to the prem 1st time asking.

look at all the teams that have gone down and gone back up…All have a decent blend on youth and expiereince with one or 2 old names from the prem.

Its the way to get out the league…And we dont wana be in this one any longer than we have to be!

  • 6 Ericles // Jul 3, 2009 at 11:01 AM

A worthwhile addition – part regular, part back-up. He can help the development of Taylor and Kadar as well as steady the defence. I think in the Coca Cola he would be useful against some of the argy bargy forwards.

  • 7 NUFC-0809-Oh Dear // Jul 3, 2009 at 11:03 AM

The pull we may have is I can see Shearer offering some form of player coach role. Defensive coach perhaps!

Is Alan Shearer After Sol Campbell For Newcastle?

why do you keep putting shearer name before players.link..

load of crap, Shearer not our manager and how do you know whoever buys us wants him as manager..

Sky Sports have just reported this right? Campbell said a couple of days ago he was looking for a stable club, there is nothing more unstable that Newcastke United so why would he move to us?

  • 11 tom tomb // Jul 3, 2009 at 11:36 AM

    Would be a good signing!

  • 12 UTD111 // Jul 3, 2009 at 11:37 AM

Think its worth remembering this story originates in the Daily Star…..’nuff said in my book…..
However its got to be rubbish – Sir Alan isn’t our manager – so can’t promise anything to anybody, we don’t even have an owner in place to make the managerial decision….
To suggest that Campbell has bought a house in the area against this background is pie in the sky I reckon….
    More press rubbish!

  • 14 Sav // Jul 3, 2009 at 11:47 AM

UTD 111 probably you’re righjt. For me, in any case it would be a smack in the chops for those youngsters )bassong, Taylor, Kadar) who hope to gain a year’s experience playing in a position where we are relatively well covered. As has been said, Sol would be expensive and probably not available for 3 matches per week. We have Beye and Butt (probably) for experienced old heads and this just sends out the wrong message to our younger players. You can’t expect them to wait all year getting the odd game behind an oul’ codger and then step up to the plate when we get promoted. These lads need matches if we think they are any good. If not, why are they here?

  • 15 Macas35 // Jul 3, 2009 at 12:10 PM

Sav – The games come thick and fast in the Championship, the youngsters should still get plenty opportunities.

  • 18 WELSHMAG // Jul 3, 2009 at 12:22 PM

that chronicle article is another without any concrete evidence, he’s made up the 80m+ bid, it’s an easy guess isn’t it? as it’s Bound to be 80m+ as Ahley wants 100m for it. He know’s nothing more than that they were there at the stadium.

  • 19 sahota // Jul 3, 2009 at 12:23 PM

Thats great news if true….I don’t know what Mike cashley will do if he get 3 bids of same amount. I think for him money is most important than our future. But I personally want someone with decent money and commonsense to own us.

id say we will DEFO have a new owner on Monday morning :)

  • 22 boater // Jul 3, 2009 at 12:31 PM

Alreet. The Owen switch is quite sad in my book. Not because I;m sad to see him go there but because it confirms what we all knew… Fergy rightly sees that in the right team he will contribute – and could even get a hatful this season. We neither had the individuals nor the team cohesion to create chances or play to the strengths of our goal getters.

Martins, Owen, Carroll, Shola et al.. were feeding on scraps for pretty much an entire season thanks to the fact we saw fit to replace players like Dyer, Nobby, Emre, Zog, Milner, etc. with Guthrie, Smith, Nolan, Jonas…..
& therein lies the problem of a lack of service.

  • 23 RyanToon // Jul 3, 2009 at 12:31 PM

  • 24 magforlife // Jul 3, 2009 at 12:32 PM

Suart79 – Middle Eastern owners almost definate, Qhatar is something new, Oman was mentioned and also the Al Kharafi family from Kuwait but any of those would do for me to get the club away from this bunch spivs.

  • 25 Elfy_Toon // Jul 3, 2009 at 12:36 PM

boater thats a little harsh on guthrie and smith. guthrie showed quality in the games he played last season. and smith always gives 100% to the cause.

  • 26 boater // Jul 3, 2009 at 12:38 PM

Sav… I seriously doubt that Bassong will be with us for the new season. The change of ownership will hopefully lead a renewed feeling of hope and a change in era,,, but this won’t extend to the likes of Bassong who probably would have been looking to move even if we’d just survived from relegation.

Campbell IF it’s true he could come… will be his replacement. Expect the transfer turnstile to start swinging big time in both directions when owner and manager are in place.

Chron are reporting that Barton is wanted on loan at Birmingham, Barton and Bowyer together, bit of an explosive mixture.

  • 29 Sav // Jul 3, 2009 at 12:40 PM

Here’s a quote from David Edgar – ruddy shameful that the club let this happen like this :-

“I had an offer from Newcastle a couple of weeks ago but by then my mind was on Burnley anyway,” the 22-year-old told the tabloid.

“One of the problems was there was no one for me to sit down and talk to at Newcastle. I finally got a phone call from them on Wednesday and I think that was after they’d seen the move announced on TV.

“They said ‘Is it true?’ and I said ‘Yes’. It’s tough but I suppose they didn’t have anyone to get in touch with me – no owner or manager.”

“I just felt it was time to move on and it was too good to turn down. I love Newcastle. I’ve loved them since I was a kid.”

    - If they’ve decided a player isn’t good enough and needs to move on, fair enough, but this is just a lazy, disorganised disgrace. I’m surprised and disappointed a versatile player who gave his all was let go for nothing. The sooner Derek Llardyarse and FatAsh are gone the better all round.
    Shame on them.

    there is the qatar rumour

  • 34 boater // Jul 3, 2009 at 12:47 PM

Elfy Toon… I don’t care if Smith gives %100 or not. I would prefer someone to give 5% and set up the odd goal or score themselves than 100% and they be cumbersome, ineffectual, shorn of pace, vision and penetrative passing ability.

Guthrie looks OK.. fine no complaints but he is too junior for us to pin our hopes on as either a commanding presence or a creative midfielder… may change fine but to replace established attacking players with young lads who weren’t even wanted by Bolton after a year on loan is a backwards step for a club the size of the toon.

SBR said it at XMAs… it’s startling obvious that we had no mobility in midfield. Also we can’t groom young players… in fact the only time we saw young players improve was under SBR.. JJ, Belles, Zog, Griffin, Hughes, Bernard, etc…
some like Ambrose and Bramble I also liked but most of yees didn’t…

Hopefully this is something we can improve on – the ability to get young talent in and groom it ourselves.. rather than Bassong – who let’s face it was a stroke of luck.

I never understood why fans across the country took so much joy in our suffering but i think it’s going to continue into the Championship:

    Sat 08.08.2009 West Brom (a) @ 5.30pm, BBC1
    Sat 15.08.2009 Reading (h) @ 5.20pm, SkySports
    Wed 19.08.2009 Sheff Wed (h) @ 7.45pm, No TV
Sat 22.08.2009 Crystal Palace (a) 3pm, No TV
    Mon 31.08.2009 Leicester (h) @ 7.45pm, SkySports
    Sun 13.09.2009 Cardiff (a) 2.05pm, SkySports

Hahaha! 4 of our first 6 games on TV, there is going to be so much bitterness already. (Even though we are only being broadcast as people love a good circus)

  • 55 Nick D // Jul 3, 2009 at 2:58 PM

Toon factor, As you know I am all for giving the youngsters a go. Yes by all means keep one or 2 older heads, but it depresses me how we never bring through our youth and yet keep faith with these people who are all playing off past reputations and have got us in the mess we are now.

I don’t know what my first 11 would be exactly yet I very much hope we will get to see Krul, Kadar, Lua, Ranger and Vuksic this season, with possibly others like Adjei and Inman maybe getting a shout too.

We only gave 2 young players a chance last season (Bassong and Carroll) and I don’t think anyone can say they let us down.

These days you have to be very fit physically and Nolan, Butt and geremi etc just can’t give us that any more.

  • 56 Toon Graeme // Jul 3, 2009 at 2:58 PM

    Satboyslim –

Look at it another way mate – we gonna show the rest of the championship how to play and win and will be on the tele to show all!!!

It could happen couldnt it!!??? :-)

If we have no manager in place by start of season I am soooo looking forward to the return of Hughtons clip board – I wont tell you where I told him to shuve it when he was last in charge. Not that he could hear from all that way up the leazes. :-)

  • 57 WELSHMAG // Jul 3, 2009 at 3:16 PM

Everyone needs to give hughton a break, it’s not like he wants to be our manager! the guys a coach and has stepped up to the plate loads of times now when we’ve needed him and although he’s never done great at least he’s tried. While the rest of them are off doing their thing who’s arranging pre-season games, gettting team building excercises together, building players fitness all pretty much on his own. They guys been great and he’s been the only one to stick with us through thick and thin, give him some credit like…

  • 59 shrews mag // Jul 3, 2009 at 3:59 PM

welsh – fair comment … he’s said himself he doesn’t want the job and so deserves a lot of credit for sticking with it.

However I do think we need some stability soon though, and hopefully with a new owner who is prepared to stick with the manager they choose for a few years … not just until the team lose a couple of games and they get fired … again … hopefully new owner … new era …

Long term stability is what we need …

  • 60 magforlife // Jul 3, 2009 at 4:00 PM

Sorry Welshmag, Hughton is a pro and just like the rest of the rabble they have not produced the goods they are extremely well paid for. I have no kind words for any of them and selfishly want them to be punished to feel the same pain as the supporters or similar. They are paid a fortune, most of it hard earned supporters cash and they couldnt give a toss about us, dont feel sorry for them please.

    agree with you welshmag

ok hughton isnt everyones flavour of the month but hes been shafted by ashley just like US!

  • 63 WELSHMAG // Jul 3, 2009 at 4:12 PM

Mag – I understand how you feel, I feel the same way with the majority of the players, managers, owners, managing directors etc not pulling their weight or contributing anything to the club. I’ve not seen any evidence of hughton not pulling his weight or not caring, to be honest I think he’s possibly the only one that does care and this has been shown through his proffesionalism. He’s not going to be on mega bucks like Smith or viduka, Infact it’ll probably be quite a modest wage but time and time again he’s been the one we’ve turned too and he’s just got on with it.

Infact if there’s one person in the whole club that earned their wages last year it would have been hughton (bar – cleaners, medical staff, stewards etc) he’s the only one who went above and beyond their daily duties to help newcastle.

The pressure of managing us in a relegation battle after all that had gone on for a second time was so great even managers like fergie would have cracked but hughton got on with it and tried his best and I honestly think he deserves some credit for that.

Sol is up there with Owen and Fowler as one of the richest men in football. I don’t want to see us hand another big fat payday to another has-been.
Sol could no doubt dpo a good job for another season, but at what cost financially and in stymying the development of youngsters.
