Our resident firebrand Joey Barton is in the news today linked with a loan deal to Birmingham City. While most Newcastle fans would love to see him sold so they no longer have to hear any mention of him and Newcastle in the same sentence, a loan deal may be the best option.

Joey Barton – Still a Magpie
Joey’s stay on Tyneside has been one of turmoil, disappointment, and outright disgust. If it wasn’t for the tenures of Mike Ashley and Michael Owen, Barton’s Newcastle’s career would be deemed by most fans our biggest embarassment.
The thing that separates Barton from Ashely, Owen, and some of our other less than stellar acquisitions over the past few years is that Barton is committed to Newcastle. While this attribute and his ability as a player does not outweigh his atrocious behavior, it is one thing Barton fans can cling to.
The newly promoted Birmingham City are said to be interested in a season long loan deal for Barton. If we are unable to sell Barton, this would be the best scenario to get Barton’s £64,000 a week wages off of the unsustainable current wage bill.
Newcastle are unlikely to recoup the entire £5.8M transfer fee paid for Barton this summer. But if a club takes on his wages for a loan deal and Barton makes good on and off the pitch, we could get a decent fee for him next summer from the loan club or even another club. Barton is going to have to prove to clubs that he is rehabilitated before they take him and his massive reputation on a permanent deal.
If not, the only other options are to terminate his contract or give him another chance to help get us promoted next season. If Alan Shearer becomes the manager, the latter is not very likely. But who knows, anything can happen at Newcastle.

Neil im not 100% sure what to do for Joey. We dont really know what happened after the liverpool game i know what the media said went on but they were out to get him the 1st chance they got. 1 thing for sure is he is the type of player we could do with in the ccc and i do think he would be fantastic in the ccc, but if we get big Al i think he will be away and i will accept it.

Wages too high – needs to be off loaded. Burned too many bridges to be trusted on the pitch!
3 Johno Toon // Jul 4, 2009 at 1:43 PM
I think he is a good player but with our wage bill so high he has to go
4 chuck // Jul 4, 2009 at 2:03 PM
C`mon Ed. He stubbs a cigar in a guys eye, sucker punches a team mate, beats up a kid, what does that tell you ?
If you havent figured it, he is a sociopath.
And as far as loyalty, it`s to the £64k. per week
he is being paid.
Get rid of him !

No he can’t be good for us, he’s a waste of space!!!
6 Dalebgordie // Jul 4, 2009 at 2:37 PM
How is barton a waste of space, he might disrupt the harmony at the club but looking at the training pics released 2 days ago joey was in fact raising the atmosphere on the trainig ground. And he is one of the few players acually commited to bringing the geordies back the to prem. Unlike enrique and jonas who cant wait to leave st. james. F..k’em both. I used to respect enrique.
7 Nick D // Jul 4, 2009 at 2:51 PM
Why do you keep saying he is committed to NUFC. What a load of rubbish. He’s committed to a 60k a week pay cheque – end of. He would be gone tomorrow if another club was stupid enough to offer him the wages people get at NUFC thanks to Shepherd’s lack of a salary cap / ceiling.
Bartons disharmony in the dressing room alone means just get rid asap.
He had a chance to play in those crucial last 3 matches after being ” unavailable ” for months and kicked us when we were really down with yet another needless act of stupidity.
8 Gary77 // Jul 4, 2009 at 2:51 PM
Hi everyone im new on here but have been reading your posts for ages now but couldnt work out how to register. About joey barton when he signed i was pleased after all he was a more then decent player at man city and apart from his stupid antics he did some things i took my hat off to him for like driving to shepheards house to thank him in person. Hes let everyone down and waisted a good chance to save his career so i wont be sad to see him go
9 Alex // Jul 4, 2009 at 2:54 PM
Lets face it , if he was to stay then he would be one of the best midfielders in the ccc . He has everything in his armoury for that division . Its just a shame he can not get his head together off the field . The big question is will birmingham be willing to pay his wages fully , if he went there on loan . If not then there is no point in us letting him go and still having to pay a part of his wages and buy a replacment for him . It would make no financial sense and who would we get to replace him , on his day he is a talented footballer . shame that he is also a thug
10 Dalebgordie // Jul 4, 2009 at 2:59 PM
So what people make mistakes, he’s a scouse too u should expect this from them ,i know its hard to forgive but think about it seriously , he is our best midfielders by far too, nolan hasdn’t done s..t for da club since he joined,i dont even want to mention alan smith wat a discrace not a single goal for da club and he used to be a striker at manchester ,butt and guthrie are exeptions..

12 Johno Toon // Jul 4, 2009 at 3:08 PM
yes i agree dalegordie he is our best midfilder but he is useless to us when he is suspended
13 BigLish // Jul 4, 2009 at 3:09 PM
What happened at Liverpool was blown out of all proportion. He got sent off for a daft tackle in a game which we were already beaten in (pretty much the same as Guthries takle on that Fagan bloke from Hull) All Barton did was to disagree with Shearer after the game – albeit maybe not in the best way he could have. Anyone who hasnt agreed with Shearer when he’s been at the club has been on their way out – whether they were players or managers. If Shearer is given the job he needs to realise that a midfield with Joey Barton in the CCC will be one way of helping us back into the prem league at the first attempt. Shearer will need to put his over inflated ego to one side and do what is best for the club – and keep Barton next season!
14 ArtyH // Jul 4, 2009 at 3:09 PM
I don’t like the moral issue with Barton, but in our position IMHO he would help us out next season and be worth it. Lets face it the final tackle that got him sent of was no worse than the Nolan tackle a few weeks earlier and Butt & Smith do the same. Some say they are committed and applaud when they get away with it, when it is slightly miss timed it looks awful and with Bartons rep he paid the price. I don’t like him as a human being ( if he qualifies for that title ) but he could help get the club out of the ccc so may be worth the risk. By the way it would show real commitment if he took a wage cut , but that’s highly unlikely!
Just my two pennarth.
15 magforlife // Jul 4, 2009 at 3:16 PM
If Ferguson bought him would the press give him an easier time?
Seriously though he has used his 9+ lives up and its time for him to move on, if he teams up with Bowyer that would be interesting, especially in the mackems games
16 Dalebgeordie // Jul 4, 2009 at 3:17 PM
Johno Toon, u’ve got a point there but a player with barton’s capability should be worth the risk.

18 Johno Toon // Jul 4, 2009 at 3:26 PM
Bartons reputation is going to follow him into the ccc , fans are going to be on his back and other players will try wind him up and he wont be able to handle , yes he would be head and shoulers above the players in the championship but i dont think he could handle it meantally , throw in we cant afford his wages i think we should try off load
19 Toon_Factor // Jul 4, 2009 at 3:30 PM
Keep him! couldnt care about his reputation, he will be great in the Championship. And the better the players we have the easier it will be to get promoted.

20 Big Dave // Jul 4, 2009 at 3:40 PM
I often find it strange that bloggers go on about this and that player has no loyalty to the club because they want to move on, then when players come out and say that they want to help us get back to the EPL they are then accused by some of only wanting to stay for the money how can any player win with such fickle supporters.
21 listie // Jul 4, 2009 at 3:53 PM
I would keep him I know he has more baggage than terminal 5, but he is they type of player who could excel the championship, every team needs a badboy lol
22 Nick D // Jul 4, 2009 at 3:57 PM
Big dave do you really in all honesty still think he would be here if someone else in the premiership offered him 60k a week. He left city quick enough and got a pay off as well instead of being sacked for GBH and all his other offences.
The guy hardly ever plays due to injury, suspensions and being inside.
Some people make mistakes, but with barton it’s a career choice.
23 Big Dave // Jul 4, 2009 at 4:09 PM
Nick D tbh I do think he is a loyal type of person. up untill the liverpool game i had forgiven him for what he had done and i even mentioned on here that i think he would make a good captain. but i was gutted when he made that stupid and needless tackle because he knew that every ref would be watching him but he still went ahead and done it, but i dont think that is a good enough reason to wash your hands of him, but what went on afterwards is a different thing but we dont know what happened in the changing room but if what was reported was true then i have no sympathy for him, so just to make my point again i do think he would be loyal and he would allways give 100% .

One negative story after another isnt it, JFK yesterday, not much today but you can bet on more pain tomorrow. I would have thought that they have run out of Bogey Man material, maybe they have enough on their plate with future England captain Owen and the re building of his character but in the absence of news of the takeover i fear more insider source type balls in the chip papers tomorrow.

33 Solaidback // Jul 4, 2009 at 4:55 PM
If Barton is as commited as some seem to think, then he’ll be happy to take a 50% pay cut while we’re in the fizzy
that will show how committed he is to our cause, otherwiase he can go foxtrotoscar as far as i’m concerned..
As for our new manager, if we get Shearer, then I can guarantee that Barton isn’t at the club come the start of the season, as for JFK, I’m not sure what he’d want if he’s made our new manager

I agree, i think was a good manager for us and would’ve kept us up but that’s all he should’ve done. Stayed until the end and leave. He has no real foreseeable future are Newcastle.
36 pubcat // Jul 4, 2009 at 6:59 PM
JK is underrated – if flawed – and I wouldn’t feel that bad should he be manager again. Appointing Shearer, though, is a more enticing option and one for the longer term future.
Barton? Shoooot, I change my mind constantly but maybe if we keep him we have to seek the backing of the FA now to sack him if he commited another serious offence. And that should be made known to Barton before the season starts?
Of the senior players I’d like us to keep:
Harper
Beye
both Taylors
Butt (though would only play him some of the time, useful for his experience)
Guthrie
Nolan OR Barton
Martins
Duff
I think it’s idiotic to sell Martins unless reluctantly if we get an offer of, say, 10M and sign someone like Frasier Campbell for half that.

41 cptmanners // Jul 4, 2009 at 10:02 PM
Bartons by far the best midfielder we have, it goes without saying that hes had his moments and needs to sort himself out. The press dont give him the chance. Gerrard fills in a dj, one day in the press and gone! Ferdinands drug taking, one week in press and gone! Cantona kung fu attack, one week and then he’s best thing since sliced bread. Lee hughes kills someone drink driving, does time, never mentioned again, allowed to get on with his game. Woodgate and Bowyer attack asian kid at leeds, woodgate becomes hero at toon. Rant over. I know he needs to sort himself but lets not get pressganged. I agree with comment previously get FA involved and sack him next time he steps out of line.
42 marcelino // Jul 4, 2009 at 10:05 PM
Pubcat – cant see us keeping all of those mate. Realistically, I’d be over the moon keeping Steven Taylor and Beye. Bassong would be HUGE bonus, but sadly he is one of the few players that would command a ‘high’ transfer fee (Martins, S Taylor, poss Colo and Enrique too)
Ryan Taylor is garbage but may do an OK job in CCC. There is better out there however, and we should still be aiming for better than that.

Is anyone having trouble reading Telegraph stories about NUFC on line?
44 marcelino // Jul 4, 2009 at 10:15 PM
As for Barton. He has to go. We’ve been here before with Bellamy….
I’m lead to believe (when we get taken over) we might be able to keep one or two of these high earners and absorb there high wages for a season, indeed if we do bounce straight back it will have been money well spent. But literally, it may only be 2 or 3, max….
So say 2 or 3 retained from Beye, Taylor, Colo, Enrique, Duff, Butt, Nolan, Barton, Shola, Martins, Smith, Guttierrez etc.
I for one see promise in Guthrie, I think he’d do well next season..
