The Evening Chronicle is reporting that Chris Hughton is now looking at £1.5m-rated Watford central defender Mike Williamson to bolster Newcastle’s depleted squad.
Mike Williamson – Newcastle interested in Watford center-back
Newcastle are down to 18 senior players following the departures of Beye, Sebastien Bassong and Obafemi Martins, while out-of-contract players Michael Owen, Mark Viduka, David Edgar and Peter Lovenkrands have also left.
And the Chronicle is reporting there could be at least another four departures before the summer transfer window shuts on September 1st.
Mike Williamson is a 6’3″ center-back who was born in Stoke on Trent, and is now 25 years old. He played for Wycombe Wanderers from 2005-2009 a total of 144 times with 11 goals.
After consistent seasons at Wycombe he signed for Watford on 26th January this year for an undisclosed fee, signing a three-and-a-half year contract.
Jake Livermore – scoring leveler against Barcelona at Wembley last month
News today that Hughton is also considering bringing in 6’2″ Spurs defender/midfielder Jake Livermore in on a loan deal, to help bolster his options in defense. Of course this may also be because Newcastle may be willing to cash in on local boy Steven Taylor.
Everton are said to be preparing a £8M bid for the local boy.
Livermore signed a new two-year deal with Tottenham last month, and he joined Derby County on a one month loan deal only last week.
We were told recently that when Sebastien Bassong went to Spurs last week Newcastle had the option of signing a couple of Spurs’ youngsters on loan, and it seems Jake could be one of those.
We’d like to see at least 5 new players brought in before the end of the month, and of course we want quality signings, whether they are on loan or not.
At this point that doesn’t really matter.
