There is news in the Daily Mirror this morning, that Newcastle may want to bring back Bolton’s 30 year-old 6’3″ center-back Andy O’Brien back to Newcastle.
Andy O’Brien – headed back to Tyneside?
Andy, born in Harrogate, Yorkshire, was on Tyneside from 2000 until 2005, and was brought in by the great Bobby Robson from Bradford City.
While Andy wasn’t the greatest center-back in the world, he was very consistent and always gave 100%, and since he left Newcastle in 2005 he’s played two seasons at at Portsmouth and has had a couple of years at Bolton Wanderers.
Over the last two seasons Andy has appeared 78 times for Bolton and is a stalwart in their defense. He is currently mulling over whether to sign a new contract at Bolton.
If Andy comes back to Newcastle, we think he’d be a good buy, and could provide some good defensive cover in central defense for the club.
There would be no doubts with Andy that he would always give of his best, and his fighting attitude and spirit would also help in the dressing room.
Andy played over 165 times for Newcastle in his 5 year stint at the club, when we finished 4th, 3rd and 5th in successive seasons in the Premier League, under the great man.
We have no idea if this rumor is true of course, but it’s intriguing, and we think he could be a decent addition to our defense.
Andy played once for the England U21 side and played 26 times for Ireland, and last year retired from International football.
