Are Newcastle Ready To Sign Sol Campbell?

There may be some good news yet this week as news that Sol Campbell was at the Newcastle game yesterday.

sol campbell and fiona

Sol Campbell with girlfriend Fiona

We’ve lost Seb Bassong, David Edgar and Habib Beye already this season, players who can play at center-back and if we can, we will also unload Coloccini, hopefully to Galatasaray, if today’s news is to be believed.

Sol is available, and he had said a few weeks ago that he would be willing to sign for a club, even if they had an unproven manager.

We though that was a reference to signing for Alan Shearer if Alan took over the management job on Tyneside.

We have to hope that Sol will be willing to sign for the club, since he would be a tremendous addition to our squad and help youngsters Steven Taylor and Tamas Kadar, come through even stronger.

A Steven Taylor – Sol Campbell partnership would be very strong indeed at the back for Newcastle.

Of course Sol’s long time interior designer girlfriend Fiona Barrattis, is a Geordie, so perhaps he was just up to see Fiona, and took in the game.

But if he is close to signing for Newcastle, and we’ve been sent a couple of “inside” tips that he is, that could also mean that Alan could still become manager. However we have to admit our “inside” tips record is not good, and we hardly take any notice of them these days.

There a lot of ifs and buts with Sol, but we continue to hope for the best, and of course there’s no doubt that Sol would be a terrific acquisition right now for Newcastle, and of course Alan and Sol are good friends, having played together for England so many times.

By the way the tip we received is that Sol will sign a one year deal and terms have already been agreed, and we are also bringing in Marlin Harwood on a loan deal – but we have no idea if any of this is true, so take it all with a pinch of salt.

We’ll know fairly soon.

Comments welcome.

Would be a good coup for us.

Defensive sability will be just as important as prolific strikers this season i think.

How old is sol campbell now???
Does it make much difference ?
If he is still soooo good, then why have some of the other newbie prem teams not signed him???
Not sure if this is good or bad 😉

lew davies- ssn said a while a go he had intrest both abroad and in the pl.
tbh if we were still in premeirship id maybe have my reservations about going for him. but at this level i defo think he’d be more than handy for a year. we need big chracters with experience. i think he’d be a good figure in the dressing room aswell. but i do see your concern.

I Take it none of you guys seen the Lap Around the Pitch Steve Taylor did after the match yesterday applauding the crowd with the kind of look on his face as if to say Goodbye !!

By that look i think its more likely Ashley will accept 8 mill of more for Taylor

…Agree about S Taylor & neverton coxon, eek!..

…It would be funny as if all the players that left us for the prem ended up havin’ a ‘mare season with their prospective new clubs!..

    (b) 1 new winger (atleast) to replace duff n jonas.
    (c) 1 new striker (atleast) to replace owen, oba, vid.

as for harewood i’ve always thought he was under-rated however I wouldnt take him at the minute unless we sold xisco to be honest… too many strikers with same ability… personally i hope they keep carroll still! As for Jonas I’ve always been a fan even if he is frustrating, he is a player who can get past people, him and enrique link up well down the left… sell him only if their is someone coming in who can get past defenders and finish with a good final ball in!

If Campbell can stay fit and accept reasonable pay then he would be very useful. A year’s contract with an option of another? Being at yeterday’s game does not mean he will be signed – there were 30,000 odd others too. Are we all going to be asked to play?

I’d be over the moon to sign Campbell.

However if we sell Taylor I’ll be the most upset and down I’ve ever been with this club. He’s by far and away my favourite player, a decent lad to boot and just about to develop into a cracking defender for the next ten years.

Surely he could hang on for another few days so see if Shearer joins and whether he wants to keep him?

    tdt #10:

    (a) Williamson, Campbell and Simpson.

    (b) Tommy Smith

    (c) Peter Lovenkrands

That’s my predictions at this point of time.

mylestoon, you beat me to it. Andrew Driver should be our main priority. An excellent replacement for Duff and/or Gutierrez. I would like to see Jonas stay, but only if he shows he has the desire and passion. Yesterday he looked like he did but at Dundee United he was shocking. I would take Campbell in an instant, as I would Beckford. A true goalscorer with some natural pace. We don’t need another big target man who can’t finish his dinner (Harewood). Andrew Driver and Eggert Jonsson from Hearts (£5m), Beckford from Leeds (£3m) and have a cheeky bid for Skjellbred at Rosenborg

no but there wasn’t 30,000 odd other footballers there on free transfers that are of any quality except sol, and if he is happy to sign then i would snap him up, he’s a big lad and a great defender still and would do very well in he ccc, i would love for jonas to stay for at least another year, but we have to get rid of colo the clown asap.

McLoven returning upfront or Beckford as the main option alongside Carroll or Ameobi would be fantastic. I’d plump for Lovenkrands on the right wages as in the CCC he’s more of an option on the leftwing than he’d be in the Premiership.

We should look at Velikonja as he’s going cheap (under £1m) and is quick, technically sound, two-footed and hard-working with good movement. That would add 2 to Ranger, Carroll and Ameobi and give us a group of 5 forwards with a good mix of styles but only one under 6ft tall.

Andrew Driver and Adam Johnson would be awesome down the left, but failing that we’d have to look to Europe. Nikolay Dimitrov is an excellent prospect and has been around a while so he’s got a lot of first team experience albeit in the Bulgarian league. There’s also Bajrami who looked good at the U21 Euro’s.

Down the right has to be James Morrison. He’d be the closest thing to a replacement to Kieron Dyer whose game has been sorely missed. Plus he could play centrally which is a bonus.

Eggert Jonsson or Morgan Schneiderlin would backup Smith as the holding midfielder.

If Campbell signs he’s not going to play every game so we need another who can compete. Williamson looks alright and Zak Whitbread is another option who could make the step up.

A left back like Raitala coming in, who like Simpson can cover the rest of the defence as well, would see a fairly well stocked team barring us equalling our worst previous injury crisises.

The sales of Duff, Xisco, Jonas and Colo should cover that lot so Geremi could leave on a free transfer just to get him off the wage bill. Butt could probably be let go as well along with Nolan or Barton.

harewood not pacey?? have u seen him play?? last season he get a few matches and was great, fast and powerfull. better then bambi(ameobi) and caroll. xixco is so crap that i dont have words for it. sol is more hen welcome, i think there is a bright future here, if we can sell the club fast, get a new manager, and bring in some new players. fast running offensive midfielders is that we need most. i sayd we will win 3-0 yeasteday and we did. but we did we stop playing fotball after the penalty?? shame.. comon guys, sheer up a little bit. and thank u for the support on the stadium, from norway

Watching Newcastle’s home victory on Saturday evening from the Milburn stand was defender Sol Campbell.

The 34 year-old free agent signed autographs for supporters and said that he was hopeful of securing a playing contract at the Magpies over the coming days.

Would be a fantastic signing. He is 34 yes, but graham alexander played every game for burnley last season and hes 36.

The most likely targets for us will be loaning players, but i think we should snap up campbell, lovenkrands and michael ball (if enrique leaves) all on frees.

If only Roeder brought campbell in when he left arsenal and not say hes too old…we would have won the uefa cup that year i think as bramble and huntington let us down in alkmaar.
