Loan signing Danny Simpson will make his Newcastle United debut tonight, as replacement for the injured Joey Barton (foot), who failed a fitness test this afternoon.
The 22-year-old will start in the right-back berth with birthday boy Ryan Taylor, who turns 25 today, pushing up into the right-hand midfield slot. Maybe Ryan can get himself a birthday goal tonight.
Newcastle continue with a strong defense made up by Jose Enrique, Steven Taylor and Fabricio Coloccini and they will be hoping for another good game at the back, and hopefully another clean sheet.
Saturday’s hat-trick hero Shola Ameobi is again paired with fellow Geordie boy Andy Carroll up front, while captain Alan Smith, Kevin Nolan and Jonas Gutierrez join Ryan Taylor in the middle of the park.
Danny Guthrie returns to the bench for his first appearance of the season, after recovering from his hamstring injury.
Sheff Wednesday are unchanged from the side which drew 1-1 at Peterborough United on Saturday, and former Newcastle target Francis Jeffers is on the bench.

Comment #42Never thought dropping out of the EPL would make following a match so bloody difficult – even teletxt only has the teams and no live text from the Beeb – if I had a tv licence I would cancel it!

Comment #43Yeah I sure will mate.
Sheff wed just had a good chance like, maybe a good start turning bad. Sheff wed has many 6 footers in their team so pysichality could be a problem tonight.

Comment #51Internet radio falls under contractual obligations which prevents it from broadcasting certain games via the internet; it’s on Radio Newcastle but on their frequency [95.9FM] actually and only available in the North East.
Come on Andy, updates please?

Comment #64For me this is typical Smith. He really is walking on eggshells now so most of his game (his tackling) isn’t going to be what it could be. Too early to get booked and stupid.

Comment #72Carrol flicked the ball over for Shola to chest it into his path and just finish with ease. Could be the confidence boost Shola has craved for years.

Comment #74This shows something about somethings.
Shola, with some confidence, looks and scores better. The level of defense in the chempionship is much worse then in the Prem.
