Gutierrez has come out today and said in the Journal he would be happy to stay with Newcastle this season. Oh really.
Jonas Gutierrez – with Argentine place safe – now wants to stay
But we’ve heard these good words before, from too many of our players.
Damien Duff we going to fight to get Newcastle promoted this season, but when he left for Fulham and said he was glad to be out of the Newcastle mess, and had never enjoyed his football for 3 years at Newcastle.
We would suggest when players leave, they keep their comments to a minimum, a diplomatic silence about the club they are departing, because it could come back to bite them.
For instance we aren’t the only ones who are thinking what he will he say about Fulham, if and when he leaves. But of course Fulham is a wonderful club for Damien.
What Duff said about Newcastle is of course accurate (picky, picky), but there’s a thing called class, and if you haven’t got something good to say – zip those lips.
One reason Gutierrez is now upbeat about staying on Tyneside is that he has received assurances from Argentine coach Diego Maradona, that his international career will continue.
That’s good news for Jonas because all players would like to represent their country at a World Cup, which only comes around once every four years, and the finals of course take place in South Africa next summer.
It seems that Gutierrez wants to reaffirm his commitment to the famous Tyneside club, which is in some difficulties right now, but will come back – for sure.
Gutierrez told the Newcastle Journal today:
“We know that starting the season winning (games) is the most important thing because it is a difficult, harder and longer season,”
“The most important is the first three or four months because if you start well, you have a better opportunity of going up.”
“This club cannot be in the Championship, it has to be all the time in the Premier League, so we want to fly and get Newcastle back there next year.”
“I think the players want to be with Newcastle in the Premier League so we are all doing the best we can. That for the club is very important.”
“The crowd helps too, it is always like that, all the time. Last year when things were not really good, they stayed with us and now they want to be in the Premier League next year, so all the time they are with us and we know they give us a lot.”
“We have had bad times and we could lose more players but you have to think in the present, not of what is going to happen in one week or two weeks.”
“We know that we have not too many players in the squad, that it will be difficult if nobody comes, because the season is very long and we have a lot of matches. But you think now in the present and not in the future.”
Of course Jonas will not have much say on whether he stays at Newcastle or not, because he, along with Argentine colleague Coloccini, Xisco and Geremi are 4 players who, if they depart, will save the club around £250K/week in wages.
That’s £13M a year and would bring the wage down from its present £48M to around £35M, which is affordable this season. We were at £74M a year in May before Owen, Viduka, Cacapa (remember him?), Edgar, Martins, Beye, Lovenkrands and Bassong departed.
Jonas continued:
“My friends don’t believe that Newcastle are in the second division,”
“It was going to be a difficult situation because I am very happy at Newcastle, but I want to play with my national team.”
“But Maradona told me that it was no problem. For me, that was important.” “He said to take care, to do the things for my team.”
“It’s no problem that I have to play in the Championship, I’m going to be in the (Argentina) squad for the World Cup qualifiers.”
“That is the word from the manager, and it is encouraging.”
“Now I am very happy about that because for me to play in the national team is a dream.”
The reason Newcastle were relegated last season is easy – players like Gutierrez and Coloccini didn’t deliver the goods on the field – it’s really as simple as that.
We still expect Jonas to be shipped out in the next two weeks, and also we wouldn’t miss Xisco, Coloccini and Geremi if they were moved out too.
Geremi is on £65K/week and cannot get his game in the Championship, so you cannot accuse Geremi of earning his money at Newcastle, can you?
That’s one reason why signing free agents is not always a good deal for a club.

Comment #44Sahota, the press make these deadlines up by twisting statements into stories. We’ve never had a deadline for an ‘announcement’ of sorts.

Comment #48In the Express this morning it mentions that Birmingham are looking to offload Gary McSheffrey and might accept 500k for him. Would be a good signing for the championship, left wing or up front. Not sure if he has had injury problems lately or not though.

Comment #50I agree with people who say Jonas & Jose are creating a good partnership down the left flank, but I’m worried that it wont work all season. Take a look at wendesdays game, Jonas had 3 players round him a lot of the night, then he and Jose would play keep ball between themselves and ultimately would lose out 50% of the time. If we can retain a higher % of possession from them doing that then great, or at least get a few crosses put in.
Off topic, my mate went into HMV on wed during the day as he’d travelled up for the match. He and his dad were talking Toon stuff & staff joined in the chat telling them Stevie Taylor had been in earlier that day, just buying cds like. The staff tried to get Tayls to sign up for some store card, his response was “I wont be needing that, as I wont be here to use it”…I’m only repeating the story I’ve been told. But if true doesnt sound good 🙁

Comment #51The one good thing that Jonas brings to the team is that he does draw a lot of fouls and he can relieve the pressure on the defence a little, if only his end product was a bit better…..

Mike Ashley, the Newcastle United owner, has given Barry Moat a deadline of 5 o’clock this afternoon to buy the club. It is believed that Ashley is close to accepting that he will have to keep the club for at least another year. Sources close to the retail magnate said that he has still not received word from Moat that Barclays, Newcastle’s lender, has approved the sale. The bank must agree to roll the £40 million borrowings over to Moat’s consortium before he can buy the club

Comment #76Toon Factor – Butt’s passing sometimes lets him down but last season he was one of the only players battling for every ball and giving 100%. He had more good games than bad and he would be far better than Softy Walter Coloccini in that position.

Comment #79when we are trying to offoad high earners do we really need to keep butt, smith, geremi, guthrie, nolan and barton….all similar midfields and all on gigh wages (bar guthrie) so lets offload 3 high earners and replace with one creative mid
offload butt, geremi and nolan orbarton(he is trouble) ..combined there over 100 k a week in wages……replace with a craft a.m.
Fostino
Aug 21, 2009 at 11:57 AM
Comment #80remaining high arners i think we should offload:
colo – 60-70 k a week
geremi – 50k a week
xisco – 30 k a week
i think we can afford to lose one more c.m. out of butt/ nolan / barton – 50 k
combined thats possibly 170k a week saved i.e. nearly 6 million saved a year bringing the wage to slightly over 40 million!!
i think we can afford to bring in:
beckford 20k
campbell 15k
pacy r.w. 20k
back-up l.b. 10k
creative a.m 20k
85k a week for 5 players = nearly 3 million
annual wage – 45million – thats sustainable if were looking to get back into premier league straight away
