An opportunist goal from Kevin Nolan after just 99 seconds, and then a terrific left foot drive from Ryan Taylor on 21 minutes into the goalkeeper’s top right hand corner, wrapped up all 3 points for Newcastle in London this afternoon.
Kevin Nolan after scoring – are they Palace supporters in background 😀
That’s 10 points from a possible 12, and 3 clean sheets in a row, for a good start to the Championship season.
And the lads were even wearing that ghastly yellow strip, which is probably what stunned the Crystal Palace players, at least for the first goal.
And after the win, which took Newcastle up to 2nd place behind Middlesbrough in the table, boss Hughton said:
“It was very pleasing to get the three points, and especially the clean sheet, away from home.”
“We said to the players before the game that we expected a tough match, and that’s what we got.”
“But to get a goal after just two minutes was a dream start – it gave the players and the fans a massive lift.”
“It was then a very good time to get the second goal and again, like Kevin’s, it was a very good finish.”
“We had to defend a little bit more after the break but I felt were always in control.” “I thought the effort and desire was tremendous.”
“We’re going very well at the moment but we have to keep that going because all of the hard work is in front of us – but it’s been a great start.”
It’s hard to fault the players’ fight and desire this season, and we have to compliment Chris and Colin on a great start for the club.
We look forward to some good news on Monday when the club will announce an update on the sale to Barry Moat, or lack thereof.
Comments welcome.

Comment #1I have a dread feeling about Monday: Ashley stays, players go, crap manager appointed, no money to buy any new players.

Comment #2Monday is very important, it will decide if we go forwards or backwards.
Would be interesting to know if Moat was there today? Or our illustrious MD? Or both? Or anything? lol

Comment #3If it was good news it would have been announced either yesterday or today. Bad news would be kept till after the Palace match.

Comment #4By all accounts Moat has alot less brass then Ashley so i wonder how this would be a step in the right direction. Will Moat be able to bring in players of a decent standard and bring in a decent manager to do a good job? I have my doubts tbh it may be like jumping out of the frying pan into the fire.

Comment #5I go along with the earlier mentioned thought process that it will not be Doomsday if Ashley stays on under certain circumstances. The man has made huge mistakes and I am the first to say I hate him but if he brings in Moat as a co owner and Shearer as Manager I can see it being a positive step. We need stability above our hate for Ashley !
Having said that i’ll be jumping through hoops if he announces the club is sold come Monday !

Comment #6Its a lose/lose situation for us the fans, if he goes we will get an owner who has no money so we cannot built to stay in the premiership (If we get promoted!!) or Ashley stays and we lose more players and our club slides further into problems with the him and his manager the crappy Kinnear.

Comment #7Moat does apparently have backing from investors and i bet he could attract a lot more investment from outside sources along the way. The bottom line is none of us know how rich he is or isnt but we know 2 things, he is a fan so would look after the club and, he made his fortune predominantly out of selling a talking fish! Anyone who can do that must have some ideas up their sleeve 😀

Comment #8Also lads and lasses. Dont forget its Sunday tomorrow, especially when reading the newspapers. Read it by all accounts but before you get excited/deflated by any article about us remember they havn’t exactly excelled themselves over the last 13 weeks, with the journal/chronicle being chief culprits!

Comment #10If Fat boy is not selling keep chris and colly – i heard calderwood on the radio today and he was well informed and seemed to be very switched on -Dont’ need JFK
If moat buys it, Shearer will be great but these two guys need to be kept at the club in ist team coach/assistant manager capacity
Nick D- i heard Shearer say that comment that you were getting stick for – you are correct

Comment #11My thoughts on Monday? Hmmm… Maybe, just maybe, nothing will happen?! Let’s be honest, how many times have we had deadlines and D-days? Plus if we need to remove about three major earners from the squad, I can’t see them marching out of the door in an orderly line all before midday Monday – enough time for Barclays to look again at the balance sheets, do the paperwork and wire through Moat’s loan in time for an end-of-the-day sale.
Out of interest, was anyone at the game today? Did Taylor do any kind of big lap in front of the fans..?

Comment #15Toonsy: You’re totally right regarding tomorrow’s papers. One of them might even manage to get things right, finally, simply because the options are now so reduced that there’s only a few possible things that can happen now.
But just remember – with news, info and rumours spreading on the internet now so quickly and efficiently from so many sources, chat pages like this are probably better informed than the journalists.

Comment #19The problem with Moat’s bid is that he is already trying to get a loan just to buy the club. How on earth is he going to be able to afford to then spend on new signings?
I don’t like Ashley, but if he’s stays and gives the manager (whoever that may be) a bit to spend then that would surely be better for the team, even if we have to see his fat face every week.

Comment #22Good result again today. I think may be the players are trying to help the club to get sold by playing out thier skins to make it a better purchase. I just hope come monday that they are not as disapointed as I will be if he says that he is staying and they say fu.ck it I am out of here or start playing like they did in the premier leauge. The club is only going backwards under Mike Ashley, no ambition what so ever for this club.

Comment #23not trying to wind people up but has any on else thought Chris Hughton could do a job for us in this division, he has obviously been able to get on the same level as the players and they all seem to like him and are responding by getting results, i want Shearer in as much as any True Geordie but as much as i cant believe im saying it, maybe we should keep Hughton in charge. Stability is what we need bringing Shearer now could upset the boat, different tactic, different ideas and we will be back to square one. Hopefully im proven wrong and we go up with whoever w have in charge. Howay the lads were ramming the words of the press back down their throats.

Hughton is doing his job to the best of his abilities, as are the players but this is not where Newcastle want to be.
Ashley gambled and got it horribly wrong.
If Newcastle can manage not to off-load any more players and somehow are allowed the money to draft in some much needed back-up,
they should p1ss this league. If not, it could be one hell of a struggle when players start getting worn out and getting the inevitable injuries and suspensions.

Comment #27i don’t think its a loan hes after but when you take over a business that has credit you either have to pay it back or take it on that’s what hes after, when you take over any business you have a business plan, and with debt, you include the debt and your working capitol IE transfer funds running costs, and its this that he needs to put to the bank who will then agree or not to the take over so no matter how much cash you have you still need to do this first unless you are a multi billionaire of course.

I totally agree with you 100% its not where we wanna be, but im just fed up of feeling like shit every day reading badly written press articles, Mike Ashley has done his best to ruin our club ad the press dont help by constantly slating us.
All im saying is currently we are joint top, Hughton has the players responding, players talking to the press saying they would like to stay to get us back to the prem so once Fat B@stard is out and moat comes in why dont we give Hughton a chance?
