Nicky Butt – A Key Player This Season For Magpies

It will be interesting to see if Chris Hughton starts Newcastle captain Nicky Butt at Crystal Palace this afternoon.

nicky-butt-34

Nicky Butt – who’s that guy in the background?

The chance to call upon Nicky Butt’s experience for the first time this season – the 34-year-old midfielder newly recovered from a thumb injury – will probably be difficult for Chris to resist.

Hughton talked about Nicky this morning:

“Nicky will be available and very much in the squad,” “That is a big boost for us.

“He is a player who did not miss too many games last season. He is a player of terrific quality.”

“Consequently, yes, as soon as the opportunity arose when we could bring him back in squad, we would take that first opportunity.”

That statement doesn’t give too much away about whether Nicky will be in the starting team this afternoon.

We expect him to start on the bench, and then be brought on sometime in the second half, depending on the state of the game.

But Chris is right, Nicky’s tremendous experience will make him an important player for Newcastle this season – that’s assuming he’s still with us in September of course.

Comments welcome.

sorry, but i disagree, nickys days are numbered. Hes not the player he was maybe 4 seasons ago, he would be useful now, but hes old and slow now and he puts in rediculous chalenges around the area! we should keep barton/guthrie/nolan/smith in the middle! maybe even play vuckic! but please sell this guy!

We said that amout Shola, Mylestoon, but he’s at a level he can score goals now. Same goes for Nicky Butt and we’ll need all the hands we can get -including Harry Vukic, before the season is over.

Trouble is, its going to take a lot more than Butt’s return to sort out what’s wrong at SJP.

He’s past it and disrupts the team, one of the worst players last season.

well if he does stay i want him to be on the bench and come one later on in the game, hes a has been! im sure we could get commons from derby for a nice price and hes much better! Get rid of colloccinni as well and get rid of geremi and theres your 3 plyers gone and wages reduced! the get lovenkrands and a CB in. Then we should have a better more reliable team!

One of our better players but passing lets him down. Would keep him as I think he will be a quality coach.

Listen, Nicky Butt is a quality player who may have lost a step granted.
But (no pun intended) he reads the game better than anyone on the team, it`s the little things he does, directing traffick, the professional foul in midfiel that prevents a possible break away, with no danger from the free kick.
The subtle things that most fans dont pick up on, and the man is a true professional giving 100% in every game .
In which case it may behove those criticising him to not show there ignorance.
I mean if the guy is as bad as some of you claim
why is he a first choice for most managers, guess they dont know sh*t either, eh ?

I don’t think NUFC are in a position to sell anybody as we are short on numbers to start with. If you look at the bench from the last three games it consisted of 5 reserves because of injury and selling of players. We need everyone we can get at the moment.

These players that we sold…like beye to Villa,Duff to Fulham etc
Have they wanted to go or are these sales being forced?

We may be on the rocks right now but I think we all know that we can bounce back and be strong again soon….if you take away all the bullshit and trauma we are still amazing and with positivity, hopefully new improved ownership we can turn the corner….I can’t explain how much this club means to me and the pain I have felt for ages but I am in a positive frame of mind and we will be great again 1 day soon.

Please Mike do the right thing and leave us in peace.

Comments in regards to selling players.
Collo and Geremi also Jonas, just sell them !
Oh yeah ! listen at the wage levels they are on, no body in his right mind would take them.
We overpaid and gave them healthy salaries, now we are stuck with them.
Unless we give them a free transfer and they agree to take a wage cut, they will be with us for the present season.
Another example of the negotiating skills of the Ashley team.
Hope we stay away from any future deals with Coruna, thats twice they have sold us a pig in a poke with defenders (Marcelino )
Unfortunately we will have got rid of all our best players if we sell Taylor (which looks like happening) and our early run may come to a halt.
    Dont look good !

What about the things fans do notice like giving the ball away to the opppsition in our own half, fouling players in or just outside our box giving away free kicks and penaltys?

He does read the game well, he does have a good footballing brain,

But his legs no longer keep with his brain meaning he is late into tackles alot and thus becomes a liability.

Sell Butt, he’s past it. Last year he was awful, he’s so slow that we were constantly overrun in midfield. And his passing is a shame, he couldn’t hit a wall from 5 meters distance while running.

And he gives away even more stupid freekicks than Smith… Smith is younger and quicker, I don’t rate him either, but he’s better than Butt.

Is this article a joke Ed???

We need to sell butt.. Yes he has experience but he’s on 60k a week. We could get an up and coming DM and pay him a quarter of that. It will make me sick to my stomach if we sell the likes of jonas and taylor before butt and geremi.

Smith is doing an excellent job in dm, get some you back up in. Sell geremi, i want collo to stay but if we have to get rid of one more then sell him too.

How many pens and free kicks did butt give away last season??

If Barry moat is to buy the club Barclays want then wage bill reduced by another 10-15 mill. Which means 3 more players need to go.. Personally butt and geremi would be first on the list for me 120 k saved a week

    …..

The problem is I doubt Butt or Geremi would interest anybody.

The 3 players likely to go are Taylor, Jonas and Coloccini as they are the 3 that other clubs will look at.

Remember we used to give stick to Smith about how crap he was? But somehow he managed to impress us in the CC. Maybe we should give a chance for Butt to show us if he has it or not in the CC before slacking him off.

Butt would be first on my list to ship out.

    What would we miss exactly?

    1) His blistering pace
    2)His pin point passing
    3) His well timed tackles on the edge of our area.
    4) His Goals from midfield
    5) His many ”assists”

The only thing we would gladly miss is not having to pay him 60K a week.

Guthrie (starplayer in two years) or Barton.

But still to sell him now would be MADNESS unless we’re really forced to…

The sorry state we are in means the best players are leaving, and Butt is not on that list…

We HAVE to reduce the wage bill if Moat is to take over. Our wages are over 90% of turnover which is ridiculous!

Why should he get his place again……..
He has no legs anymore,we lost loads of games last season because he couldn`t keep up,simple as that!
as the old sayin goes,”you don`t change a winning team”
Smith,Guthrie,Lua Lua,Vuckic and Nolan would all bein there b4 him on my team.

    ….

Would they go even if we let them leave on a free?

As players they are not worth anything and nobody is going to pay them what we do, would they happily walk away from the final year of a huge contract?

Geremi wouldn’t, not sure if Butt would.

Apart from that it has also been said that money still has to be knocked off the overdraft, which is what the fees for Taylor and Jonas would do, if Geremi and Butt go for free they won’t help reduce it.
