It appears that Icelandic defender Solvi Ottesen would choose Championship football with Newcastle ahead of a move to the Premier League.
Sölvi Ottesen – Newcastle interest?
Newcastle are reported to be one of a number of British clubs eyeing the 25 year-old 6’3″ central defender, who is currently with Danish club Sonderjyske.
He has been linked with Birmingham City and Celtic, who can both offer top class football in Britain, but it seems the 4 times capped Iceland International would opt for life at St James’s Park, such is the lure of the Newcastle club.
Ottesen’s agent Gudlaugur Tomasson was asked if Championship football would be a deterrent to him signing for the Tyneside club:
“No, absolutely not. I know Newcastle are a big club and I would actually prefer it if Solvi joined a team in the Championship.”
“He is the type of center-back suited for the English game, but it would be good for him to get some experience of English football before playing in the Premier League.”
“The talk of Ottesen moving to England is just speculation at the moment.” “He has been linked with a few clubs in the UK and there has been interest in him – clubs have been following him.”
“But there’s nothing concrete at the moment.”
It seems to us that his agent is trying to drum up some interest in his player.
We have no idea if Newcastle are even interested in him, but we are certainly short of central defenders having lost Edgar, Cacapa, Bassong and Beye this summer already.
But Newcastle should also be planning to add to their defensive options in the event they are successful in offloading Argentine £10M flop Fabricio Coloccini.
But Coloccini wants to move to Spai and that added to his £6M price tag, may make it difficult to move out the Argentine this summer.
But there’s always the possibility of a loan deal too.
