Sol Campbell has signed a new deal at Notts County for an amazing £2M a year over the next 5 years.
Sol Campbell – £2M a year to play in England’s 4th Division
We had hoped that Sol would sign for a year with Newcastle, and we think he could have made a big difference in the team.
But it certainly looks like Sol has gone for the money and he’ll be 39 when he finishes this contract at Meadow Lane, and by then Notts County may even be in the Premier League.
Sol signing for the money makes it a lot easier for us to accept we lost out on him, because we wouldn’t want players who are just here for the money – we’ve had far too many of them.
Sven Eriksson apparently had been pestering Sol every 3-4 days about moneybags Notts County, and he is said to have signed yesterdayIt seems like Notts County are the Manchester City of the lower leagues.
The only reason players go there is for the money. And from what we’ve read it hasn’t gone down fantastically well with their fans, because Sol will be raking in around £40K/week, and playing against players who don’t earn anywhere near that, in fact they are a million miles from that kind of money.
There’s something we just don’t like about deals like this – we’re not sure they’re good for football. It’s very similar to David Beckham at the LA Galaxy.
It’s going to be hard for Sol to click he’s there for anything but the money – but look out for something like – I bought into the Eriksson vision for this great club.
Or something like that – and maybe it’s true because money is the only reason Sven is there too.
And to think he had the chance to wear those black and white stripes for the real Magpies.
But of course it’s still an unbelievable deal for Campbell, since he also gets to coach, and has said he wants to be a manager one day.
