Nile Ranger, 18, making his first ever start for Newcastle, and at St. James’ Park too, overcame his nerves to play his part in a thrilling 4-3 win last night against the Terriers.
Nile Ranger – overcame his nerves and butterflies last night
After the dramatic win last night – the next round will be drawn live next Saturday afternoon – Nile Ranger talked about the game today:
“When Chris and Colin (Calderwood) showed me the team-sheet, I was shocked,” “I heard I might be starting, but I wasn’t too sure.”
“When I saw I was starting I was buzzing – I had butterflies all over.” “I was nervous at the start, but the fans were always supporting me. They made me feel confident.”
“I had a few chances in the first half, and I had one or two in the second half.” “Jose (Enrique) put one across, and I tried to go front post, but the defender came in front of me.”
“It’s always good to go out there and battle. The senior lads are always giving you confidence and encouragement, and I needed to keep my head up.”
A young Newcastle side – who trailed 3-1 just 2 minutes into the second half, needed an in-form Shola Ameobi to come off the bench for the second half and lead the fightback.
Shola got his 5th goal of the season from a penalty, before setting up Kevin Nolan for the winner on 86 minutes. Not a bad second half for the local lad.
And Ranger was relieved that Hughton’s young players came through with a good win in the end, with 19 year-old Hungarian Tamas Kadar looking cool in the last 45 minutes, to play an important part in the Newcastle win.
Ranger continued:
“I went out there and gave my all, but it was hard. When we were 2-1 down, I was thinking ‘is this because the youngsters are on?'”
“But Shola came on and we came back strongly. We battled all the way.” “I’ve never played in a game like that. “
“The mood was good afterwards. I wouldn’t have liked to have gone in there if we’d lost, but everyone’s happy.”
Great experience for the team last night, and particularly for the youngsters who participated last night.
Comments welcome.

Comment #86How about a swap deal Shittu for Barton ? we get a defender that could do a good job in this division and loose a dickhead on too much money . We have enough midfielders and would not miss him .

The plot thickens..here is another rumour from SKYby a bloke named John Holliday….FFS back…again???
Mike Ashley is a man on a mission. He wants to sell Newcastle United. He wants £100m. But he has, as yet, been unable to find a buyer. Is it becoming mission impossible?
I think not. There are THREE parties speaking to the owner of Newcastle – not two as reported by many media organisations.
Let’s start with north east businessman Barry Moat. Ashley, I’m told, quite likes Moat. He’s a local lad done well and a chap he’s very happy to have a beer with. But Moat is struggling with one vital aspect of any deal. He’s struggling to come up with the money. Will he? A source, close to the negotiations, tells me it’s doubtful.
Then there’s Geoff Sheard. He claims he’s leading a bid by an unnamed American company to buy Newcastle. Sheard is a bit of a red herring. He’s the man who once tried to buy Sheffield Wednesday. He also once ran the club shop at Preston North End in the 90s. Has he got £100m under his mattress? Nope. What Sheard wants is “exclusivity” – an agreement with Ashley whereby he can approach rich businessmen and try to sell the dream to them. He’s a long shot.
The THIRD party involved in talks is an unnamed consortium from Ireland, who’ve got former Newcastle chairman Freddie Shepherd involved. They certainly have the cash and are major players. I’m told they will show Ashley they have proof of funds by close of play today.
So why is it taking so long? And will Ashley sell?
Ashley bought Newcastle for £130m two years ago. He wants some of that money back. He wants £50m upfront, with a further £50m deferred for a couple of years.
The club is forecast to lose £57m this year. It has an overdraft of £39m with Barclays, which the bank hopes to reduce to £10m – a par figure for a Championship club. And Monday is the day when Barclays want to do it – so the rush is now on.
So who will get it?
My bet is with the Irish. If not them, Moat. Even if he can’t find the £50m upfront figure, I’m told Ashley could yet sell it to Moat by loaning him the money.
In the world of football finance, nothing’s impossible is it…

Comment #95PS, how can the club be forecast to lose 54 million this year? the wage bill is less than that we’ve recieved about 30m in transfer funds, we’ve got a payment of 12 million from the FA add any tv revenue (3m?) and shirt sales and TV money (6m?) = break even or lose a few million? surley we can’t be forecast to lose 54m!

Comment #101The American’s want to be in a position of control on monday, not full control yet, but similar to the Man City owners last year. They would have enough control to bring in a manager and new players. The full takeover would be announced at a later date.

Comment #103Sorry but i believe nobody, not just on this site but on any of them. Sorry if anyone has provided correct information but i’m sick of all the WUM’s.
At the end of the day there are only going to be a very small number of people who know who the bidders are etc, mostly people at Seymour Pierce, the bank and the lawyers. I doubt many people know at the club at all.
Over 100 people were made redundant from the club, so why would would anyone ITK risk losing their job by leaking information? It wouldn’t be hard for Ashley to work out where the leak came from.
