It seems that Chris Hughton is working very hard on bringing in new players to the Newcastle club over this weekend.
Chris Hughton – working hard to strengthen squad
Chris told the Evening Chronicle today:
“The most important thing is the squad size.” “We have to make sure that come Tuesday we have a big enough squad.”
“As we are finding out at the moment, we are stretched.” “It would be fair to say we are stretched at centre-half if Steven Taylor or Fabricio Coloccini have any problems.”
“Up until this week the centre-forward position wasn’t such a big problem but now we have Shola, Andy Carroll and Xisco out.” “The problem areas have to be up front and centre-back.”
But we are probably also short at full back since we have no real dedicated left back to challenge Jose Enrique. And probably need some wingers, but if Jonas stays, which now seems likely, we’re probably OK there – especially if we get Peter Lovenkrands in.
Certainly more loan signings coming in, like the quality of Danny Simpson, would be great.
The Evening Chronicle is reporting owner Mike Ashley is dealing with each transfer request from Chris one by one, on its individual merits before coming back to Chris with the answer.
Don’t forget last year with Ashley involved, we waited until the very last day of the transfer season on Monday, September 1st, and then we couldn’t close the deals.
“I can say is that we want to be able to compete come Tuesday and we’ll do whatever it takes to do that.”
Hughton can also bring players in on loan after the window closes,s we pointed out earlier this week, with the Football League allowing emergency deals up until the fourth week of November.
We expect we would qualify for this – because the attempted sale has impacted our ability to bring in new players – do you think that will pass muster? We think they will already have checked this out – we hope they have already checked this out.
It also looks like Chris will be in charge of the playing side of things for the foreseeable future, unless something happens in the next few days on the sale.
