American Consortium To Meet Ashley Within 48 Hours

August 31st, 2009 by Ed Harrison · 52 Comments

Sky Sports is reporting tonight that an American consortium are hoping to hold talks with Newcastle over a possible takeover deal in the next 48 hours.

nufc-crest

Representatives of the New York-based consortium have flown over the pond again, and previously were holding discussions with investment bank Seymour Harris in London, but now want to meet with owner Mike Ashley and Managing Director Derek Llambias directly.

That seems to point to some progress having been made – but yes, we’ll not hold our breath.

With the summer transfer window due to close at 5:00 pm tomorrow, the famous Tyneside club, renowned for its tremendous fan base, remains up for sale three months after Ashley decided to put it on the market again for the second time in less than a year.

Some caution though from sources on Tyneside, who say the group still have to show they have the money to buy Newcastle.

Ashley wants £100M, but there is also an outstanding overdraft of  £20M on a  £39M limit.

We hope something comes of this.

just got back from the match. Another good win for the lads. Enrique was outstanding again. If fatty could just open his eyes and buy us some players we could walk this leauge. I see we have lost another 2 squad players and gained none while I have been out on the lash.

Ranger and Simspon were the best two IMO

  • 8 WELSHMAG // Aug 31, 2009 at 10:31 PM

This is the problem, The club is still for sale and while it is Ashley will not pump another pound into it, therefore no transfers tomorrow, maybee one just to shut hughton up as he’s probably knocking on ashleys door every night asking for some funds.

Isn’t it horrible to think, now that it looks like it’s working with chris we have another dilema on our hands, stick with him and hope the good results continue or get another manager in and hope it doesn’t upset the squad.

This time tomorrow we shall at lease know who’ll be with us for the next 5 months.

  • 9 Spitfire // Aug 31, 2009 at 10:34 PM

Danny Guthrie stating to look like the new Robert Lee.
Ranger outstanding looked like Shola and Carroll combined in one player
Even Ryan Taylor hardly put a foot wrong.
    Ashley won’t buy anyone.

  • 10 Eaststander // Aug 31, 2009 at 10:35 PM

    Enrique Smith Ranger were class

  • 11 durhammag // Aug 31, 2009 at 10:36 PM

WE ARE NOT GOING TO BE SOLD………Jeez, how many times does this have to happen. Ashley is simply doing what he has done every transfer window; put the club up for sale so no players of quality come in, sell off the ones that we can get most for and pump the money straight into paying off the debts. MA is not interested in the well being of NUFC, but is looking to shore up his credit rating by ensuring he has a low debt level. If he was concerned about the club, he would have sold it on months ago

  • 12 Eaststander // Aug 31, 2009 at 10:36 PM

Yes not sure I want AS as manager. I know it’s a lower league but C Hughton is doing a great job.
Yes I want a takeover, but I am loving this at the moment with the youngsters finally getting a go.

  • 16 RyanToon // Aug 31, 2009 at 10:39 PM

    lovenkrands and who?

    - Isn’t paying off the debts a good way to run a club ? As well as selling off all our overpaid mercenaries and bringing through

    Ranger
    krul
    kadar
    Lua
    Vuksic
    Donaldson et al.

  • 18 Big Dave // Aug 31, 2009 at 10:47 PM

Nick D I think CH is doing a brill job as is Calderwood and the senior players, but i just dont think he will be that good when the going gets rough. I think he lacks the steel and discipline that is needed

  • 19 Big Dave // Aug 31, 2009 at 10:48 PM

RyanToon i think lova will join mcclesh at birm

  • 20 Toony Soprano // Aug 31, 2009 at 10:49 PM

class tonight – Chris (Manager of the month?)and Colly for the job, Leicester were no bums and the effort from our lot was exemplorary

Harper – 2 great saves when it mattered

Simo – maybe one of those players who makes it look easy?

S Taylor – classy and calm

Enrique – if he can improve his crossing he will be the real deal his defending and distribution was class tonight

Ron Geremi – not bad, good enough for us in this league

Smithy- Best player on the pitch in the 1st half – was never going to lose tonight

Guthrie – Great goal and will get better still, good engine

Barton – tonight gets him match fit ,plenty of effort slighty short of fitness

Nolan – another great game, tireless and plays well up front

Ryan T – good crosses and gave us great balance

Ranger – young Drogba?, christ i hope so?

need, Lovenkrnads- something different, Centre Half – Killgannon would be good, but i dont see it, a clever loan signing would do!

  • 21 Stardust // Aug 31, 2009 at 10:50 PM

Big Dave – I am not sure how you can say CH lacks steel – I see a man who stood strong, calm and dignified when all around him crumbled.

He is the focal point of this new belief imo

  • 22 RyanToon // Aug 31, 2009 at 10:50 PM

We need more than two players though, we need to get at least 5 in but it aint gonna happen, one if were lucky

    neet :)

  • 23 magpie6699 // Aug 31, 2009 at 10:55 PM

I heard it’s the Mafia – headed by Rigatoni Arrabiata. Oh no, that’s what I had for my tea at Mimmo’s before the game.
Great 2nd half – real battlers and defence kept them quiet – no major saves for Harps to make. Seems like Newcastle United, aka Haha lets laugh at their joke defending, have conceded one goal in 5 league games.
1st half could have been ploppy though but for a bad miss by them.

  • 24 Big Dave // Aug 31, 2009 at 11:01 PM

CH IMHO lacks the steel ie He is just an honest hardworking Yes man, who just gets his head down and gets on with the job no questions asked.

  • 25 Fans Should Own The Club // Aug 31, 2009 at 11:06 PM

    Hello all,

I missed the 2nd half–had to take the wife to the doctor. Can anybody sum up the big difference for me? 1st half we looked reasonably stable, I guess, but not especially likely to score.

Sounds like we really came alive in the 2nd. Can anybody shed some light on that? Thanks…

  • 26 batty // Aug 31, 2009 at 11:08 PM

2nd half we ran the game and made it look easy

  • 27 dave 1961 // Aug 31, 2009 at 11:17 PM

Mike Ashley spend 12 million to get 150 million when we go back to the premier league, if you throw away such a solid start you will be pronounce history biggest looser. the choice is yours , what do you want to be hero or Nero

  • 28 punk skunk... // Aug 31, 2009 at 11:19 PM

    Fans,
they weren’t better in the 1st half mate, both teams had chances, we played the better football, the ref shoulda awarded us a pen…Harper made a class save & a good one from a free kick they shouldn’t have had!..
…We played the better football 2nd half, kept runnin’ & gettin’ stuck in, winnin’ the ball, but with less clear cut chances, barrin’ Guthrie’s excellent strike & ran out deserved winners, as they ran out of steam & ideas!..
    …Toon Toon!..

  • 29 Stardust // Aug 31, 2009 at 11:21 PM

Dave – I think your post is very valid – he may perform a soft about turn – remember loan players can sign until November.

    Toony Soprano-

I thought I was the only one thinking of young Nile as the new Drogba!! Great minds think alike, like?! :)

    Stardust @ comment 21

COMPLETELY agree m8. CH is the picture of what a manager should be right now. I’d prefer CH and CC over Shearer and Dowie right now, whole-heartedly. Nowt against either of them, but Chris and Colin seem to have the lads competing as a team and gettin’ the job done reet.

  • 32 punk skunk... // Aug 31, 2009 at 11:29 PM

aye man, just say what ya’ see, say what ya’ see!..

…It’s not that difficult is it?..

  • 33 punk skunk... // Aug 31, 2009 at 11:34 PM

Hughton really knows how to talk/deal with the media plebs, he gives nowt away, won’t be drawn!..
    …My favorite type!..

…They’re gonna write whatever shite they wanna anyway!..

…Keep it goin’ Chris & Col, & A Thompson, you’re doin’ an excellent job in ridculous cicumstances…Keepin’ cool heads & concentratin’ on the football side of things, instead of concernin’ themselves with all the pap!..
    …Ho’way the Lads!..

  • 34 OHurley // Aug 31, 2009 at 11:40 PM

well said punk. always enjoy your posts, m8

  • 35 Fans Should Own The Club // Aug 31, 2009 at 11:46 PM

    right on. THanks Punk.

Sounds like Nile had a great 2nd half. Good supply from the midfield, then? I guess we really benefitted from the half-time reorganization chat.

  • 36 scottish mag // Aug 31, 2009 at 11:47 PM

here cant we stil get players in after the deadline cos we r in the champ now

  • 37 OHurley // Aug 31, 2009 at 11:48 PM

    fSOTC-

Yeah, we came out and owned the 2nd half. Great linkin up on the left and in the center. Barton and Smithy really fought hard. Once JB gets totally match fit, he’ll OWN the CCC. Ranger is absolutely class with his back to the goal. Can really create some great chances. Just wish had Lovenkrands playin up front with him. Could’ve scored 3 or 4 goals tonight EASY.

  • 38 punk skunk... // Aug 31, 2009 at 11:51 PM

    O’H,
cheers mate, just try & be as objective as possible, it’s hard sometimes, but honesty is the best policy, ain’t it?..
…No sweat fans, Ranger did great mate, defo one for the future, with a bit for the present too, great hold up play, would like to see the lad put it in the net soon!..

  • 39 bill // Aug 31, 2009 at 11:56 PM

Isn’t this story about two days late?

  • 40 Fans Should Own The Club // Sep 1, 2009 at 12:01 AM

O’H, you said that we combined well on the left.

Was it Enrique/Guthrie over there or Enrique/Geremi? Geremi & Guthrie seemed to have switched sides a few times in the 1st.

Barton–someone pointed out he’s not really match fit. Hadn’t thought of that. But if that was the problem, why did he play better in the 2nd?

Maybe Hughton is a better tactician than we’ve had so far. Anyone have any thoughts on that?

One more thing–and sorry to keep asking so much–but when did the subs come on? Was it very late, ie; 86-87th minute, or did he make any changes earlier?

  • 41 bill // Sep 1, 2009 at 12:02 AM

If Darron Gibson comes in tomorrow that will be a great loan signing. He has a great future ahead of him. I rate him very highly.

He scores some fantastic goals from midfield. He almost saved us from relegation last season, pity we weren’t up to it at Villa.

  • 42 chuck // Sep 1, 2009 at 12:07 AM

As far as my understanding is Ashley wants out regardless of when, in which case the unsubstanciated rumors concerning the US group remain as a faint light at the end of the tunnel.
They certainly sound like the ideal fix for us,
a NY based group with proffessional sport management and marketing experience, plus reputed to have the neccessary financial resorces and obviously ambitions to promote the club into a top PL competitor.
Quite a change from our parsimonious billionaire and his gambling casino pal, who have in such a short period gambled and lost.
Resulting in our going from a team challenging in europe to one demoted to the fizzy league.
Lets hope this last chance attempt at buying out this loser is for real.

  • 43 chuck // Sep 1, 2009 at 1:24 AM

Ranger as the new Drogba ?
Hope you are joking, because he was a lightweight to-night easily pushed off the ball and pretty much innefective.
He needs to bulk up considerably if he wants to emulate Drogba, who is a big powerfull presence, with the skills to go with it.
Ranger has a long way to go to even match 2nd division standards, remember he is still a kid.
So lets not get carried away here.

    ————————————————————

The only right thing you said there was the last statement “he’s only a kid” you were obviously watching the wrong match mate as Ranger in the 2nd half was awesome in his tackling,m his effort to keep the ball & the passes he did!! And for a 18yr old,I think he stood his ground very well, yes he needs to bulk up but I bet Drogba was the same at 18…. Rangers confidance grew the longer the game went on & the more it grew, the better he got, so if playing in front of nearly 39000 TOON fans, the expectation on him were great, so imagine what he’ll be like playing without that pressure of an away match, he’ll be outstanding…
And another thing, if he was as you said he was, how come he got MOM for his first real performance in front of the Geordie faithful!!!

As for the Yanks, I so hope this is true & we’re taking over by some multi-billionaires who’re willing to spend money & get us back up to the top where we belong!!!

  • 48 Winston Potski // Sep 1, 2009 at 10:42 AM

What a load of utter rubbish!
Yet another name linked with an even more rediculous takeover proposal.
“one fella phoned us on Friday night and gave us a £1 million donation” Are we supposed to believe this type of garbage?!
The Newastle fans are tired of talk and want action rather than more unfounded speculation.
“I would say there’s a 75 percent chance we could do this”
    Try 0% chance!

forget about this fans takeover sh!te, the problem now is there are two american bids and its down to ashley to accept one of them, like i said yesterday i posted this interest by the yanks 9 days ago and this has been ongoing from before moats bid.

the sheard fronted deal sounds like the most likly one but you never know if the other american consortia out bid them this could end up going on even longer.

sheard is offering £50m down payment and £10m a season for 5 seasons. = ashley getting his £100m
