We said in the match preview that if Coloccini starts tonight he will be staying on Tyneside – well – guess what? He’s not even on the bench.
That probably means a deal’s in place for Coloccini to leave Tyneside – so maybe the Fenebahce story that he’ll be sold for 3M may be true after all.
That’s OK with us – as long as we bring in an experienced center-back to replace him – Matt Kilgallon from Sheffield United or Andy O’Brien from Bolton would both be good, as would Watford’s Mike Williamson.
And of course our own 19 year-old Tamas Kadar, who is on the bench tonight, is just waiting for his next chance.
We don’t think Fabricio’s out because of International duty, because he can leave tomorrow for that. Brazil play Argentiona on 5th September – which is this coming Saturday.
18 year old teenage striker Nile Ranger keeps his place in attack with Shola Ameobi out.
Jonas Gutierrez (groin) also misses out and experienced Cameroon internatioonal Geremi, who scored in last week’s 4-3 Carling Cup victory over Huddersfield Town, again starts in midfield.
Joey Barton returns to the side after a two-week foot layoff with Danny Guthrie, Kevin Nolan and skipper Alan Smith completing the engine room line-up. That’s strong midfield, which we hope will be too strong for Leicester tonight.
Ryan Taylor, Danny Simpson, Steven Taylor and Jose Enrique make up the defense. Chris Hughton is plumping for experience tonight with Danny Simpson partnering Steven Taylor in the heart of defense.
Maybe it was Danny’s strong showing there last Wednesday that convinced Newcastle they could cash in on Coloccini.
Chris would also have gone with a back four of Simpson Kadar Taylor S and Enrique.
19 year-old French forward Wesley Ngo Baheng is named among the substitutes for the first time.
The bench looks very young – as you may expect as we are running out of players.
This is a game we must win.
Howay The Lads!!
