This is deja vu all over again (just like last year), as we await news of the players Newcastle have signed in this transfer window, but it may be that Lovenkrands is the only signing. 🙁
We are short at center-back, full back and winger, and it seems like striker is the only deal we have made to strengthen the squad.
News that Portsmouth have signed reported Newcastle target Mike Williamson from Watford. The 25-year-old center-back put pen to paper on a four-year deal.
But presumably we can still make loan signings through November, but we had to sign Peter today – so trying to be positive Newcastle they’ve done the deal they need to today.
And maybe other loan signings are being lined up for when the window opens again for the Coca Cola Championship in 2 weeks time. We understand that in the Championship you can only play a maximum of 5 loan signings in one game.
The Sun was reporting that Newcastle United had signed Manchester United’s Northern Ireland 20 year-old center-back Craig Cathcart, on a season-long loan and also there were rumblings we may be interested in his colleague, 21 year-old midfielder Darron Gibson.
But no official confirmation (yet?) of these loan moves, if indeed they have been done (yet).
If the deals are to be done in 2 weeks, we’ll have to get Danny Simpson on his cell phone to convince these lads at the Red Devils to join Newcastle on loan. 😀
Despite today’s transfer deadline passing, the Evening Chronicle reports that Newcastle United can still sign players, on loan, up until the end of November.
But free agents, who haven’t found a club yet had to be signed before the transfer ends tonight, and we’ve done that with Lovenkrands.
But the bottom line is that we’ve unloaded 11 players in the summer, and brought one in, and if were told that would happen after w e were relegated in May, we would have thought that to be just crazy.
Our calculations say that the wage bill has gone from £74M to £46M, and that includes Xisco leaving on loan yesterday to Racing Santandar.
That’s not too bad because that’s 62% of last year.s wage bill, although it may be a litle high if our revebues decrease by 50% – btu if the lads continue the way they’ve started it’s very likely he gates will higher than expected – so0 we’re in pretty good financual sgape therew.
And we took in £23 M in transfer fees to help reduce the overdraft.

So then Stardust, tell us, you’re happy with the squad Ashley’s provided us with I assume?”
To be fair AOTN – I am an optimist and invariably happy, I always make the best of bad situations – we are high on quality in relation to other teams even if short on numbers for a full season.
However if you asked is this my ideal situation – no, not at all – far from it. But my slant will always we can prevail – I dont associate with pessimists – life tough enough.

Comment #82Glad Peter is Back, think he can have an impact in the fizzy pops.
Wasn’t expecting an influx of new talent…10m invested in a few decent signings would have gave the squad a real boost….be a tuff season if injuries and suspensions get the better of us.

Comment #83The thing is, you’re so completely pro-Ashley. Surely you have to agree that the future of the club is now well down his list of priorities and that he’s neglected the needs of the club? He now see the club as merely a set of balance sheets, to massage however necessary in order to retrieve as much money from the sale as possible.
I’ve always said that his original financial model was correct, but he completely lacks the ability to run a club, create a management set-up that works and any interest in keeping the fans informed.
As I can’t see these things ever changing, he must leave.

Comment #85Just found this on the Luton website…
Luton: Emergency loan rules
Emergency loans can be taken out at any time between Friday 8 February and 5pm on March 27, 2008 and can only be used by Football League clubs loaning players in from other clubs in England, including those from the Premier League. International switches are not allowed including Scotland and Ireland.
Players can be signed for a maximum period of 93 days on such loans.
Players on emergency loan can be recalled by their own clubs after 28 days have expired, but not before.
Only five loan players (whether standard or emergency) can be named on the team sheet for any one game and no more than four players can be loaned from one club to another in any one season.
Emergency loan signings can be made up to three hours before a league game.

Comment #86AOTN – from what I have seen – we are certainly better off with him that Moat – not that I am sure about him at all.
I agree Ashley has weaknesses but principally communciation.
I ask this – would you spend all your money on a bunch of folk who hate you?
Actions have consequence – I have always advocated that. (on all sides I hasten to add – but I dont like scapegoats – the real villain of the peace is KK imo)
