Peter Lovenkrands was interviewed at the Benton training grounds tonight, and he said he was delighted to be back and it was a good move for him and his family, who really like the Newcastle area.
Peter Lovenkrands – good to be back
Lovenkrands was interviewed tonight on nufcTV after signing a new three year contract with the Tyneside club.
Peter said:
“I’m really pleased to be back at Newcastle.” “My aim is to help the club get back up but it’s great to be back with the team.”
“The move had family reasons around it as well and now I just want to play my part.”
Peter said he was physically fit but needed some “wee games” to get back his sharpness.
When asked if he thought he was now be the fastest member of the squad, since Oba Martins had now left the club, he said he didn’t know, but then corrected the interviewer by saying:
“I didn’t say Oba was faster than me – I said he could be faster than me”
Said with a wee smile we may add.
For those of our readers with nufcTV membership, the video’s up there now, and there’s also a good one with last night’s goalscoring hero Danny Guthrie.
Peter Lovenkrands is fast, and a natural born goalscorer, and in the Championship this lad could get lots of goals for us.
Peter Lovenkrands has lots and lots of friends in the dressing room, and they had been calling him on his cell phone persistently asking when he was going to sign.
And it’s also good to see he’s signed a 3 year deal, which will allow him to stay on Tyneside for an extended period – and he may even get a Geordie accent to replace his Glaswegian accent – but he’ll probably be too old for that now.
Newcastle have let 11 players go in the summer, and brought in Danny Simpson on loan, and now Peter on a free, but the club can still sign emergency loan deals until the end of November – starting in 2 weeks time.
Craig Cathcart – 20 year old talented player
There were a number of players we were said to be interested in today, but anexciting one is 20 year old, 6’2″ center-back Craig Cathart from Manchester United.
Craig was on loan at Plymouth last season, and played 30 times for The Pilgrims with one goal, so h already knows all about the Championship.
We’ll need to get Danny Guthrie and Danny Simpson on their phones, calling Craig Cathart, to ensure he signs for the club in a couple of weeks. But knowing those two, they probably already have done that.
The word on Craig by the way is that he’s an old fashioned type center-back, who’s good in the air and strong in the tackle.
And we cannot think of a better person than newcomer Danny Simpson to give a recommendation for the Newcastle club to him – Danny seems to just love it on Tyneside – and that’s great to see.
Oh, and Danny is a good young player who’s played very well for us so far, and seems just a terrific lad in general.
Comments welcome.

Comment #45Vuckic must have something as hughton brought him on ahead of Lualua on Monday. Although the youngsters need a permanant manager over the next 2-3 years if they are going to live up to their potential, as they will impress one man, then he goes then ahve to strat all over again which will jus demorialse them.
And dont know if someone has already given this link but hey…

Comment #51Previous Quotes from Lovenkrands
“Sunderland is certainly an interesting club. The city is near Newcastle, where we have settled fine and it would be attractive to stay in northern England,”
“I would not mind to continue to play in England and particularly in the Premier League.”
“It’s correct I received a letter from the club saying my contract with Newcastle now has expired,”
“But it’s no big surprise for me that Newcastle didn’t renew it when they don’t even have a manager in place.”
From Agent
“What does he wish for in his future career? He wants to stay in the UK and preferably at the highest level possible.”
“Peter was keen to stay on and help fight for the cause. He is devastated and upset by this.
“Despite the pain of relegation, he wanted to talk about a new deal and put some wrongs right from last season.”
—
I’m not trying to knock the lad but 2 weeks ago we offered him a deal and he waited till the absolute last minute before agreeing it. And it took 3 contract offers before he finally did agree, whether the stumbling block was wages or length of contract is anybody’s guess.
An interview with peter in the Journal from jun he had this to say:
—
“I would love to be at Newcastle United again next season,”
“I know that things are up in the air with the gaffer and no one has said anything to me yet, but if the chance was there then I would take it.
“I’m open to anything that Newcastle say to me. I’m waiting to hear what will happen next for me but hopefully it will be something from Newcastle.”
—
If he performs consistently ill be happy, if he’s just here for the money then he can sod off we’ve had plenty of players like that in recent years.

Comment #55J.Barton have brains to know what is a defence splitting pass or long passes. This is what our team is short at when in the game.
The other guys running the mid-field just don’t understand it.
This kind of passes can divert defence to attack and like wise. Its is best when doing a counter attack.

Comment #57Just watched the Keith Harris interview, we are being sold and he praised the judicious work done by the club( laurel and hardy) in sorting out the wage bill and said the club is now a very attractive proposition.
Well thats fine and i am pleased to hear it, but and its a very big but, the squad is a car crash waiting to happen and its a very bad gamble.
Go back 12 months, draw at ManU, we all wanted players, ignored, everything went tits up, there has got to be some way of a compromise.
An experienced centre forward and a centre half would get us by, two players, its not a lot to ask for because if we dont each injury picked up will amount to a major disaster.

Comment #59I am in the camp that is wondering why the hell we have signed this Lovenkrands and even more amazed some of you think its a decent signing. At best he is going to be fifth choice striker behind Ameobi, Carroll, Ranger and Vukic. Midfield he will be eighth choice behind Smith, Barton, Guthrie, Spidey, Taylor, Nolan, Lua Lua
Even more amazement is we ogave him a THREE year deal. Why? When we get back to the Premier league he will be useless as before. I remember him missing an open goal and I mean an open goal at St james last season that Harry redknapps wife would have scored.

Comment #60davis – J.Barton possesses absolutely no brains of any description whatsoever.
In fact I’ve often wondered why we haven’t attempted to recoup some of the tens of millions we’ve wasted on him by flogging him to the Freeman for medical research.

No one is saying throw the kids in altogether, (although we did actually win 4-3 !!)
but there is nothing wrong with giving the likes of Vuksic 20 mins here and there. Look what a storming game Ranger had, but if you had your way he wouldn’t even be on the bench. If you’re good enough, you’re old enough.
With the likes of Smith, Nolan, S Taylor, Harper, Barton, Geremi, Butt (unfortunately) and Lowenkrands we do have plenty of experience in the spine of the team. But if you are so paranoid and afraid of giving the youngsters a go, we will never get to see another Gascoigne, Bearsdley, Waddle etc.

Bit paranoid there aren’t you? Would you pay the best part of 250M to buy the club and service the debt and employ Seymour Pierce at great expense for months on end just to get back at a minority of short sighted fans.
Look at West ham. No one protested over Curbishley. Almost the next day they got a far better manager in Zola and they were off and running.
Ashley may be a drunken, gambling idiot who knows nothing about football along with his horrible croney Llambias, but running the club in to the ground, which I don’t believe he is if you look at the bigger picture, just to get back at the fans is crazy. No one wins if that was his intention.
Essentially Ashley has shifted a hell of a lot of deadwood and got our debt to a reasonable level.
Signing more and more players on further wages which we just can’t afford isn’t an option.
No one likes Ashley as he is an odious fat slob, but how would anyonbe else do anything better without the finances to do it? Making Ashley a hate figure over the KK affair hasn’t done anyone any good at all.

Local lad Mark Donninger scored plenty of goals in the reserves from midfield last year. What was his reward – his contract was’nt renewed. So scoring goals in the reserves is no guarantee of first team football although in Vukic’s defence I’d say he will be a good player 2-3 years down the line.

I’ll tell you why many people think Lovenkrands is a decent signing.
1. Variety – he is different to the other strikers – light, pacy. Which would you prefer up front? To have two Alan Shearers or Alan plus (say) a Bellamy? Shearer always said he liked it when he could hold the ball up and watch the flyers go past him.
2. He can play striker or wing. We lack width with only Jonas as a true wide man (not counting untried youngsters) – and much as I love Jose Enrique, his crosses when he does bomb up the wing leave something to be desired.
3. He scored 3 goals in the Premiership in 12 appearances – a better ratio than just about anyone in the squad at present.
4 People get injured!
I think he could be a very useful addition in the Championship.

Comment #67Lovenkrands is a good player, will people just leave it and get on supporting the team now. What were some of you lot expecting from Ashley? the club is up for sale still thats all we need to know now. The lads have made a cracking start with a thread bare squad lets be the 12th man and carry them up to xmas unbeaten. Howay the Mags!! (Mc Lovin 25 goals this season)

Comment #68Is this not the first time the Fat ponce has the club up for sale outside of a transfer window, we should be jumping for joy. If what Harris said is true then we are staying for sale. That is it for me no bloody quick fire sale. Just a nice slow takeover by the right person this time. Ashley has taken us a far as he can (down). If he takes it off again then lets wreck the place but until then lets help Hughton keep us at the top of the leauge instead of licking our wounds we are hard as fu.ck geordies afterall.

Comment #69I think Loven will on fire in the championship! the guy scored a few vital goals in the prem and looked very capable of playing to that standard so he’ll be on fire in the championship.
I’d like to see Ranger and Lovenkrands start upfront against cardiff.

That team is a bit narrow ain’t it? I would rather see Barton and Ranger get dropped and play Jonas on the left and Ryan Taylor on the right. Barton and Ranger can make a great impact from the bench. Especially Ranger who has terrific strength and a great burst of pace. He will be a nightmare for tired defenders.

Comment #72The worst thing we can do would be to start Ranger for the next game. He has just come off of a fantastic debut performance i know, but he has really been hyped by the media since and there is now a lot of pressure on the young mans shoulders. We need to ease him into the first team. I would like to see a 4-5-1 with Lovenkrands up front against Cardiff.

Comment #73Don’t know if anybody mentioned it yet (there’s a lot of anger on this page that I can’t be ar5ed to read), but Lovenkrands also turned down two premier league clubs BEFORE he signed for us. I know one of those was Birmingham, but I’m not sure about the other.

Comment #74Dragonera, I think we should use Ranger as much as possible to get him into a regular pattern. How often d oyou hear about players getting their best form in a run of games?
With Shola injured, we could play a very nice front pairing of Ranger and Carroll up front with Lovenkrands in the hole. Stick Guthrie, Smith and Barton in the midfield behind them and a defence of Taylor (R), Taylor (S), Colo and Enrique and you’ve got a pretty frightening team to play against.

I agree about using him often. However, there is significantly less pressure on a player when they come off of the bench. I just feel that all eyes will be on him when that first whistle blows against Cardiff. He will no doubt know this and the pressure could be too much.
