Yesterday in the Journal there was a reference to Newcastle possibly being interested in yet another Manchester United player – this time it’s 21 year-old Ireland midfielder Darron Gibson.
Darron Gibson – is he coming to Newcastle
Danny Simpson is on loan until January, and news early this morning in the Sun, that says that 20 year old impressive center-back Craig Cathcart has agreed to join Newcastle on a season long loan deal
The Journal briefly reported yesterday:
“Newcastle have been heavily linked with Manchester United youngster Darren Gibson and The Journal understands he could also move to the North East this afternoon.”
When we’ve seen this lad play – 5 appearances for the Red Devils – he’s looked good – but he’s a central midfielder – and it would seem to be a strange signing unless the lad can play winger or full back – since we are stocked full of central midfielders.
Darron is already a full Ireland international and has appeared 5 times for the side.
The 6′ tall midfielder has played 73 first class games so far in his career with 5 goals, and like most Manchester United youngsters Darron has plenty of class, and he would be great in the Championship.
We wonder if Danny Simpson has been teling Newcastle about these players – could be.
We also noticed that Nicky Butt didn’t even make the squad last night, and in his press conference before the game Chris Hughton said Nicky was fit and available – so we assume Nicky may move out today.
We’ve said before he’s the obvious central midfielder to leave Newcastle – since he’s 34, we could get £1M from a Premier League side like Hull or Stoke for him – and we also save around £50K/week on Nicky’s wages.
We’ll see if this is why we are in for Darron – within about 14 hours.
If the last scenario is true we think it’s another excellent move by Newcastle – and yes – there’s some hope in that statement. 😀
Comments welcome.

Comment #7Sounds like a good swap frankly, if this lad is any good and we agree a fee at which we can buy him at the end of the season…

Comment #8Thing is, we can only loan two players from any one club, so it’ll be Gibson or Cathcart (as we already have Simpson), unless we buy one of them (unlikely)…

Comment #9Peter Lovenkrands was today set to rejoin Newcastle United after they offered him a contract to head off Blues interest.
The Danish winger trained with Blues at Wast Hills yesterday with a view to a deal, similar to the Stephen Carr scenario last season.
However, Alex McLeish couldn’t provide any guarantees to his former Rangers attacker, who became a free agent after his release by Newcastle following their Premier League relegation.
But Lovenkrands has now been given the security he craved by Newcastle and McLeish wasn’t in a position to match their offer.
Lovenkrands wasn’t prepared to wait another five weeks or so for Carson Yeung and his group to take charge, when McLeish would have had the resources – and been able to judge form and fitness – to act decisively.
He said: “Peter was a player we got to look at but because of our financial situation I couldn’t offer him a contract, we’re spent in terms of the budget.
“But it was my intention to let him train with us for a few weeks. I think he’s a bit short of fitness. Then we would have seen what had happened.
“Once the takeover had gone through successfully – or even if it hadn’t – Peter might have showed up so well that I could have persuaded the club to have taken him on. But he had an offer from Newcastle on the table.”

Comment #11How good would that be – Gibson in, Butt out.
Rules may be slightly different in the championship. Bruce had Muamba, Llarsson and Bendtner from Arsenal at Brum.
I really love the way we are finally now cleverly using loans and bringing on younger players, rather than endlessly paying ransoms for injury prone, over paid has-beens.
My concern with shearer is that he would have kept his old buddies like Butt, Duff etc and not given the kids a go. Hughton and Calderwood should just be left to get on with it now. AS has done nothing to justify walking in to the job, quite the reverse in fact.

Comment #12As long as we get rid of Butt I’d be happy to see anybody coming in.
But NUFC are very short up front, we need a striker!

Comment #13NickD – you dont know what Alan Shearer had in mind so dont knock him, Hughton also had a barren points spell last season when in charge so your point fails.
I hope your right and we get players in but we have been fed this BS before and also didnt Hughton say over the weekend that no more players would be leaving and two left yesterday?
Your posts are pro Ashley and you seem quite happy with the current situation of having a threadbare squad with kids filling in the gaps, we are getting away with it at the moment but it wont hold together for ever.
This is not just my opinion, Harper and Hughton both said it last night.
We are scratching around yet again at the last minute going cap in hand to other clubs like frigging beggars and the Chuckle brothers are sitting in the stands laughing their cocks off at us.

Comment #14What a remarkable change for this club… Some years ago NUFC paid 15m+ for players, nowadays the only ones we can hope to get in are free agents or loanees…
But finally the side seem to be united and fight for eachother, if only the overpaid lazy gits we’ve been fielding the last 3-4 years did that as well…

Comment #15Nick D- for all you know Shearer would have gotten rid of them all, you dont know what his plans were, and as for Hughton, he said regarding each of those players, that he wanted to keep them, so its not really a case of Hughton getting rid and bringing in youngsters. He’s had to get rid as he had no say in the matter!!

Comment #22Some people are never happy I guess.
I’m usually one of them, but right here, right now I’m enjoying the moment and if it’s loans (Simpson) and youngsters (Ranger) then more of that quality will do me nicely.
I am not pro Ashley, as I think he is is a no class, boozy gambler, but some people would think he was the devil himself. You wouldn’t plough that much money in to something in the hope you would make a complete mess of it. Ashley’s main crime is he doesn’t know football and he appointed all his cronies which is the fist rule of business not to do. Mind you Wise did get us Vuksic and Ranger who could be monsters for us.
I am thankful someone addressed the debt problem which was always going to require a deep intake of breath, while deadwood was cut away. The only one I will really miss is Bassong, but he didn’t want to be here.
I am not anti Shearer either, but now just seems the wrong time to rock the boat, at the top of the tree by 2 clear points.
Gibson is a good playmaker, but I’m not sure about the 3 loan from one club rule in the championship.

Comment #24Loan Rules:
FA rules say you can have eight players on loan but only five can be used in any one team squad, that is, the 16 players named for the game.
You can also have up to four players from any one team. So we could have four players from ManU if we could get them.
The situation is also slightly complicated by the short term and long term loans but this seems essentially about the age of the players concerned.

Comment #26Ermm, if we can have (officially that is) five from Man. U. can we also have Vidic and Roony
please ?
Hey, happy to get Simpson, Cathcart and hopefully Gibson.
Whats happening with Colo, is he on his way ?
If thats the case we need a replacement and would`nt be upset if we brought in Killgallon, then what am I saying, that would require spending a few bob.
Ah well, s`pose we should be happy with what we are getting, may be enough to scrape us through to a promotion spot.
Boy how the mighty have fallen.

Only four from any one club, so it will just be Rooney.
