The Sun is reporting that Newcastle United have signed Manchester United’s Northern Ireland 20 year-old center-back Craig Cathcart, on a season-long loan.
Craig Cathcart – youngster looks like star in the making
This lad’s pedigree looks great, and like Danny Simpson he seems class, and just the type of player we should be bringing in.
He is well thought of at the Red Devils, 6’2″ tall and very good in the air.
The Sun’s reporting the deal is done, but we’d like to see it on our official site. We checked the site at 2:00 am local time and there’s nothing there yet – where are they? 😀
The Belfast-born center-back has played 11 times for the Northern Ireland U21 team, and has had two loan spells – in 2007 he was at Royal Antwerp where he played 13 times and scored two goals.
Last season he was at Plymouth Argyle, where he played 30 times with one goal. It would be great if Plymouth supporters reading this can let us know what the lad is like – but from his profile he looks a star in the making.
This was posted on the Plymouth web on 19th December last year:
” Craig Cathcart has been a revelation since joining Argyle on loan from Manchester United in the summer but he now needs to be patient.”
“The 19-year-old forced his way into the team after Kristián Timár’s sending off in the September defeat to Norwich but was recently left out for the home games against Birmingham and QPR.”
“It has taken well over two months for the Hungarian to regain his place and manager Paul Sturrock explained that Cathcart’s omission from the last two games was not a reflection of his performances.”
We still have a feeling that Coloccini is on his way, and if Craig is coming and maybe one more experinced center-back – we should be fine in central defense.
The departure of the Argentine will reduce the wage bill by around £65K/week, and will also help to sell the club. But we may be wrong and will know within 10 hours.
This is good news so early on this Tuesday morning – the last day of the transfer window.
