Newcastle Bringing In Craig Cathcart On Season Long Loan

The Sun is reporting that Newcastle United have signed Manchester United’s Northern Ireland 20 year-old center-back Craig Cathcart, on a season-long loan.

Craig Cathcart – youngster looks like star in the making

This lad’s pedigree looks great, and like Danny Simpson he seems class, and just the type of player we should be bringing in.

He is well thought of at the Red Devils, 6’2″ tall and very good in the air.

The Sun’s reporting the deal is done, but we’d like to see it on our official site. We checked the site at 2:00 am local time and there’s nothing there yet  – where are they? 😀

The Belfast-born center-back has played 11 times for the Northern Ireland U21 team, and has had two loan spells – in 2007 he was at Royal Antwerp where he played 13 times and scored two goals.

Last season he was at Plymouth Argyle, where he played 30 times with one goal.  It would be great  if Plymouth supporters reading this can let us know what the lad is like – but from his profile he looks a star in the making.

This was posted on the Plymouth web on 19th December last year:

” Craig Cathcart has been a revelation since joining Argyle on loan from Manchester United in the summer but he now needs to be patient.”

“The 19-year-old forced his way into the team after Kristián Timár’s sending off in the September defeat to Norwich but was recently left out for the home games against Birmingham and QPR.”

“It has taken well over two months for the Hungarian to regain his place and manager Paul Sturrock explained that Cathcart’s omission from the last two games was not a reflection of his performances.”

We still have a feeling that Coloccini is on his way, and if Craig is coming and maybe one more experinced center-back – we should be fine in central defense.

The  departure of the Argentine will reduce the wage bill by around £65K/week, and will also help to sell the club. But we may be wrong and will know within 10 hours.

This is good news so early on this Tuesday morning – the last day of the transfer window.

Comments welcome.

Good news if true. Now we just need Lovenkrands and a player that can cover both LB and LW.

WE GUNNU WIN THE LEAGUE! WE GUNNU WIN THE LEAGUE! Another good win and performance today.Lots of work to be done but its great to be at the top of the table for once. Hughton is doing a great job, we can’t emphasize that enough. I am concerned about his commetn that he wants “one or two” signings in the next day! we just lost 2 in the last day in Colo and Xisco! how will this help our already stretched squad bofore those 2 left!!! lets just hope he’s being pessamistic but i have a feeling thats the best case scenario! 🙁

i have seen alot of cathcart and he has a great future ahead of him.

he will dominate strikers in the championship and with him and stevie taylor, scoring past us will be near impossible 😀

on a side note does anyone else think that our defense if the cathcart deal does go through is better than last seasons in the premiership i would have:

    simpson cathcart taylor enrique

beye collocini taylor enrique any day of the week

lads as i live in devon, i could not hear any things said about a player, even though i cant stand plymouth, the horrible fans recon, he was unreal and what i said yesterday, i would be delighted if we signed him and gibson, and it looks like happening

we need a whole squad’s worth of new players, not a couple – we’re going to be knackered if we get any more injuries……

Am I not right in thinking you can only loan two players from one other team at once? So with us already having Simpson it’ll be Cathcart OR Gibson, unless we fork out for one of them…

The minimum today is two permanent signings. Add in two more loans (Cathcart and Vaughan?) and a couple of frees (Lovenkrands and Albrectsen?) and the numbers will look much better.

Pity we can’t get some defensive nous / experience, rather than more good youngsters.
And would love some guile and pace in midfield / attack.
