Things may look really bleak for Newcastle fans right now, but if we can get 5 loan signings lined up that we can bring in, in 2 weeks time, things may be better than they appear right now.
Matt Kilgallon – failed to sign him today
It seems like Newcastle were after two signings today and they accomplished only one.
The one they didn’t do before the window closed was a deal to buy 25 year old Sheffield United center-back Matt Kilgallon, who we previewed a few days back and he looked a very good player.
We thought we were bidding around £2M for the player, which was probably too low.
The failure of Newcastle to reach a deal with Sheffield United for the player, was reported just before the transfer deadline closed – by Sky Sports.
Unless we now try to get this lad on loan, we’ll need to wait until January, but he still seems a good capture if we can get him.
But Chris Hughton has played his hand as to what he wanted to see now, and the club have not ensured we have a big enough squad for this season – not yet anyway.
We still have the opportunity of some loan signings we can bring in in2 weeks time, and we’ll have one game before that against Cardiff.
Hopefully we’ll have 3 strikers to choose from – Lovenkrands, Ranger and Carroll, but Ameobi and Gutierrez look likehey have long term injuries.
Here’s where we stand with the squad righ now:
Goalkeepers: Harper Krul Forster (on loan to Norwich until January)
Central Defense: Taylor S. Coloccini Kadar
Full Backs: Simpson Taylor R. Enrique Tozer
Wingers: Geremi Barton Gutierrez (long term injury) LuaLua Baheng Ferguson
Central Midfield: Nolan Butt Smith Guthrie Vuckic Donaldson
Strikers: Ameobi (long term injury) Lovenkrands Carroll Ranger
There’s 25 in that squad, not counting Forster.
When you look at that list – meant to be our first team squad – there’s a lot of youngsters in there.
We still need a left back and a central defender for the defense, plus an experienced striker if only to fill in for Shola until he’s fit again.
Shola could well be out for a few months – so we could sign somebody on loan until January – 30 year-old Marlon Harewood would be good.
For central defender there was news this morning – but in the Sun – that we had signed Manchester United’s Northern Ireland International, 20 year-old center-back Craig Cathcart, on a season-long loan. His pedigree looks great and we may still get him on loan.
We were also linked with Manchester United’s 21 year-old Ireland midfielder Darron Gibson, but he’s a central midfielder, so that’s a puzzling one.
So the minimum, very minimum we need to fill out the squad are
1) left back 2) center-back 3) experienced striker
If we can do this in two weeks time we’ll be a lot better of than we are now, but could still be short if we get injuries again like we’ve always had in the past.
Time to take those ice baths after each games and each training session, if the lads are not already doing that.
